I've played them all. CoH might not have the content to keep me playing for years to come, but i must say NCsoft did something right and different here. (unlike their horrid horrid L2 PoS game). So, lets take it to the polls!
Joined 2004 - I can't believe I've been a MMORPG.com member for 20 years! Get off my lawn!
first i must say that CoH has great fighting in it's game best if ever seen in an mmorpg.
Very good ai, different kinda mobs (monster, bosses lieutant and normal ones) that group together and help each other really great there.
Also they storyarcs are pretty good although i would like to see a visaul effect on me for completing a full storyarc though.
Character ceation is awesome you really look like a hero after it and still most people look very different.
Sidekick is awesome they should do that in more mmorpg's :0
well that where they good points that kept me playing for a month but i wouldn't have stopped if there weren't a lot of downfalls aswell.
First of lack of content.
Now a lot of mmorpg are realeased with minimal content so there still hope that that will improve.
Second no PvP wathsoever
NOw thats going to change with city of villains but for me it's just like i have to pay for half a game then let you pay they cosat of another game with it for features that should be there from they start.
Im feel like im getting exploited for my money here because of this.
really repetive qeusst.
90% of they qeust in CoH consist of go there kill everthing find some cleus rins repeat
there where some qeust in there that where really neat with getting temporary power of items you collected but there pretty rare
No class balance
They just don't seem to bother with class balance in CoH.
my blaster was lvl32 in a week and did it mostly by soloing qeust.
my healing controller never got passt lvl19 although i played it more then they blaster
best group in CoH would be 1 scrapper (to kill they boss of a group quick, one tanker (to occupy they main force 1 healer 1 controller and 4 blasters.
at higher lvls you could do even with 1 tank 1 healers 1 controller and 5 blasters
skill tree
well you start of with 5 arch types having about 5 choices for main power and 5 choices for second power.
well that looks like a lot but with only anchaments to infleunce those and very similar powers within same archtypes it doesn't give you a feel of a lot of choices.
In fact playing they same archtype gves you largely they same feel to it.
aslo sins they powers cross over in archtypes high lvl scrappers and tanks are reallly going to become less different as you get too higher lvls although at that point you really want to have them play differently.
With they other archtypes it's a little better but not much.
Easy to exploit
Well they reall power gamer has a blast here :P
they fixed some of these already though but still you can go to lvl40 in under 2 weeks
Is there something as too much soloing options ?
well depending on your class it can be as i said going to lvl32 with my blaster in a week only 1,5 day of that was done by grouping they rst by doing they storyarcs and qeust solo and some solo hunting
No player based economy
sins ou can just buy all you enchaments in they shop (or agent at higher lvl).
at higher lvls it becomes so easy too get money everybody seem to have so enchaments.
For that matter i don't know why there's money(ok they call it infleunce but it's money) in this game it hardly serves any purpose except at lower lvls.
So to break it down into one sentence:
CoH does they thing that is most important to they game very good and is almost lacking (or totally not there) in every other aspect normally also assocaited to an mmorpg.
Originally posted by rentantilus CoH is just new graphics and a different setting plastered over the same old level grind and tree skill system ripped off of Diablo 2. Sooner or later, people are going to have to realize that different graphics do not equate to a different game!
heu ?
there are some similairties to they skill system of diablo but if you really played they game you would know that it's absolutly not they same and coh has a flexability in your choice of setting up your powers by enchaments that is new inventive and nothing like diablo II
and about that lvl grind if you do it right it nothing like they diablo lvl grind sins you can't gain exp for completing a qeust (except 1 in LoD) which you can in CoH.
If you finding it a lvl grind before lvl30 in CoH your really should do more qeusting.
After lvl30 i would agree it becomes just another lvl grind like diablo II and almost every other mmorpg out there
I havent voted on the poll because as much as i think CoH is a great game i do not think it has enough features to even be called an MMORPG.
The game is very fast and fun, and easy to play. But it is mostly about action rather than roleplaying, and should be in a sub-genre of its own IMHO.
PS: in such a sub genre it would probably reign supreme
PPS: i think more or less every current MMORPG title should also be in a similar sub-genre because i struggle to find any true roleplaying aspect in any of them
I think CoH is one of the most interesting MMOGs right now but I don't believe it is the best. While it has great appeal and engaging gameplay, it is entirely short-term appeal and attraction.
It is a game that you will more than get your money's worth out of. It seems worth every dime and more, but to be the 'best' it would have to be more of a long-term game and I don't see that happening.
I liked it for a month and then cancelled it. For me to continue it would need a strong end game with a lot of raid-type content. It gets old blasting the same type of mobs on the same type indoor missions, no matter how good the combat is. I had a 29 Fire/Axe tanker, a 21 ice/ice blaster, a 19 dark melee/reg scrapper and a ton of 10-12s
CoH is great for combat and Tits and Asses . I highly doubt you will find a game with better hotties and better asses, unfortunately most of them are probably 14 year old boys...
CoH does what it does, and it does it well, but it doesn't do much.
CoH's problem is it's theme. Don't get me wrong, the superhero theme is fun and it's cool, but it's more limiting then other themes. Superheros don't craft items and sell them to other superheros. Superheros have their costumes already, they don't need to loot archvillians to dress themselves. This is the mindset that the devs had when creating the game and it makes great sense, it just doesn't make a great MMO.
After the fun of killing stuff wears off you're left with not much else, when in other games you can work on tradeskills, shop for items, PvP, etc. I think they'll eventually add these things (PvP in CoV), and if they do this game could be great in a year or two.
The theme is good, the idea is nice... The only problem is that they limit what you can do in the game alot. For the 2 months i had it, all i seemed to do was fight badguys. There really needs to be more to do in the game.
Nice try City of Heroes, but i'll stick to watching "Batman and Robin" re-runs.
Playing: City of Heroes/ Dark Age of Camelot Upcoming: EverQuest II
CoH is a glorified mission system...that is it. I compare it to doing faction missions in SWG...only THAT IS IT, nothing more. Sure, PvP will be introduced soon...so then you will have missions and PvP. It was cool for the free month I played it, but there was no way I was going to pay for no real content...next.
I have tried them all and I personally like Eve Online the best at the moment and wont ever not play it. But I would be open to play other games in addition to playing Eve. I dont see any atm that I would play other then Eve (MMO's that is).
face of Mankind looks like it could get some of my attention if it has enough players to make it fun. Thats about it. I would be more interested in Everquest2 if they had PvP. WoW is something I definatly WONT play.
After my 1 hour session of playing CoH back in open beta, I started to ask myself, "What do I do in this game other than go on these silly missions?". After that I couldn't find an answer, and right after that, I uninstalled it
Seriously, why is CoH so good? I don't see why it is rated so high, I would give it a 6.5 just for the great character customization, graphics, orginal game, but that's it. It definately doesn't deserve to be on the top 5 list IMO, and definately not 8.3, lol.
Did not vote because i think CoH is the best MMORPG to have come out in the last 2 years but is not the best out there.
If you are new to the mmorpg genre i would recommend a few of the older ones over it.
However,if you are burnt out on the older ones(basically i mean DAoC and older ones since i think CoH is the best since DAoC) or just don't have the time to burn in a mmorpg then CoH is the ideal choice atm.
I went out and bought CoH about a month ago and I was enticed with the ability to be a super hero. After playing for a good 1 - 1 1/2 weeks I was bored, and this is why --
i- Quests - were all the same: go out and arrest x number of thugs, remove this group from an office building, etc...
ii- Player animation - is the same regardless of the characters build, or type (mutation, sceientest, technology). Very Generic movements throughout the game.
iii- Player skills - regardless of class were practically the same with another class skill set. Perhaps a little variation, but mainly generic skills.
iv- Content and bugs - Content was bone dry, apart from the same type of quests, there was nothing enjoyable to do. It's a very linear gameplay style, with no variation in storyline. As for bugs, there were a few quests that were bugged at release.
v- Tech Support - Although very friendly and posting quite often, in game support was horrible. If I had a question or problem I needed resolved, I would have to wait for hours. This was perhaps because of a long queue or lack of tech support reps.
vi - Community - This was a shocker for me.. There was absolutely no one talking. I expected there to be little global chatter at release but this was rediculous, considering the server worlds were full, or almost there.
Maybe it's because I played games like AC/AC2/UO that I came to expect a better type of gameplay and more content. Waste of $60 IMO.. but then again there are others who enjoy the gameplay... just not me

CoH sucked. The combat system sucked. It was a joke. You want a good combat system, play AC1. Nuff said.

I think this post is prity much on spot.
Id like to add alittle on details too CoH the advancement sytem and the Quest system are very lean compared too most common MMORPGs and has lead too being bored to bits at mid level much earlier than I had expected.
This probably is caused thru having most relavant power(skill) at lvl 32 and my inabillity to find an challange of any kind be it fighting, char development, Questing(*cough*) or something else...
I had planned Coh as gap filler... Okay want i mean to say don't count on it keeping you bizzy for long.

It doesn't have the most content or PvP, agreed, and it's different than Fantasy MMOs (crafting, economy), but that's not a bad thing from any semi-objective point of view...
When it comes to graphics, combat, community, stability and general fun-factor, CoH comes through in spades. Not only that it's immensely successful -and- brings newbies into the stagnant MMO market (which is full of jaded gamers like yourselves )
Overall, it's the best... the only way not to like it is if you play it more than ten hours a week... and you can't hate it unless you play 25 or more...
