Just wondering if it's a little late to start playing this? After watching the retrospectives on gametrailers this has caught my attention more and the lack of mmos on the market right now is leaving me with alot of wasted time doing nothing.
Just wondering about this.

More than anything else, you're going to need friends to get anywhere. Get into a linkshell! Choosing a class that is in demand is how whores get groups. Ninjas, I'm talking to you!!! Make friends instead.
Thanks for quick reply, would probably be playing with atleast one other person, not a single clue about what classes work together or needed the most.
Every party needs a healer, a tank, and support.
Not true.
Now its all about
TP burn (4 x of the same class, 1 brd/cor, and a healer)
or
Mana burn
6 BLM or 5 BLM+ brd/cor
Personnally i love normal party in the old fashion way where people does skillchains. The level 3 skillchains hits around 1-2k dmg itself.

This is probebly the best time to join the game! Ive been playing for a little while now .(about 2 mounths) The game seems to just now be starting to get well known. I do warn you though, This game is probebly the haeviest grind youll find.
I'd say it's too late if you plan to do all Missions: nation, ZM, COP, TAU. Especially Zillart will be problem.
Reason is that almost all players already did them. And some are rather difficult and level capped.
Also crafting: you'll compete with quite a lot ppl with 100+3 skill, who make gil solely off HQ synths, which you won't make for quite some time. And NQ synts = loss.
Job system: Most think that ability to swap jobs and subjobs is cool feature. That's correct until one realize that
a) he needs to lvl subjob ASAP, often one which he don't want to play.
b) it's almost expected to have multiple jobs leveled and switch them on demand. This brings problem with gear - inv. space is limited.
So you'll grind exp a lot. And not only for one job.
I could continue but well.. get it and try it.
One try = 1000 replies.
To reply to the above poster,
Not true to what you say.
1. Missions are the easiest to do because all it take is a /sea all rank #
2. Zilaart and CoP are harder in general. But Zilaart does not need alot people to do and there are MANY players even now need these missions as we speak, i have met many players who have multi 75 and yet started on ZM.
3. Leveling subjob is a pain, but do your research target one sub only, if you are leveling RDM, don't brother level WHM. Whm is practically useless until 55+ While you could also level both job to gether as BLM and WHM share gears. Jobs like SAM, DRK, DRG focus on /WAR which is very good anyway, you could level /thf just for the little dmg its add, but not necessary. Brd... well doesn't even need a subjob, just sub whatever. Cor use /rng which people use rng to build up their marksmanship. And ninja...well could be use on any main job.
4. Sub job leveling is not a grind, the time require is so low that half and hour would earn 1 level. It still faster then WoW's grinding *if you have the leveling clock, you would see even level 20 wow character take 2-4 hour to level*
none
1) probably right
2) certainly not as few years ago, when you had lots of players eager to do them
3)I tried to imply that it's not like other MMOs with one job/char. No, you can't just say "I'll be a WAR" and then proceed to level it to 75. Then start with engame stuff.
You'll see: "hey, you need to go level xxx for sub now"", "hey, you should level xxx as next job now", "hey, you should have xxx as subjob from this lvl" etc..
BTW there are is also this. You will hate it.
Also not all jobs are accessible from the begining - they must be unlocked by doing quests.
I, myself don't mind leveling. I like grouping (which is mostly necessary at higher lvl), I like combat in FFXI so no complains here.
But I dislike how you have to get some "must have" gear at certain levels. It;s also often very expensive, so you have to stop with exping and go farming/crafting/camp already camped NMs for 0.01% drops.
Conclusion is that a new player will have to grind exp a lot in FFXI.
In terms of your worries about coming to the game too late...
I just restarted (was a previous player) and have had no problems with grouping and newbie populations have been a lot more robust then I thought they would be.
I'd say its a great time to join!
Make friends, and none of the negative things the above posters mentioned will be a problem. In fact, those things will be very fun to do, as they were intended. Without friends willing to lend a hand, they will be frustrating or impossible. I cannot stress the importance of having friends in this game enough!
I have to disagree with you unfortunately. I've played nearly a year and I have Rank 6, Still on the beginning of CoP, not started Zilart and on mission 9 in TAU. Yes, they are capped but you can play around with jobs, see if you like them and use those for the capped missions. Also, with crafting, it's not only about profit. I have leveled up cooking to stop from buying food. I compete with a market of 1, me. And HQ synths aren't always required to make money. Some crafts you can farm the items and craft them with relatively little to absolutely no cost money wise. Also, if you check the wiki (http://www.ffxiclopedia.org) you can get an idea of what job you think you will like. Check out the suggested subjobs for them and you can get an idea of what jobs to level. And for the good first 40+ levels, if you buy the right gear (sometimes not the best but still good gear) you can use it on numerous jobs that you are leveling.
Also, as far as people asking you to change subs, tell them no. I tell people no all the time. If they don't want the way I'm setup, that's fine, let them find someone who will change. My gear and my macro's and such are setup for me to play a certain way. I'd suck changing my sub as I don't have macros for it and no experience playing it that way.
The lone comment i agree with is "One try = 1000 replies.". Go get the starter pack thing for like 3.99. Try it out, see if you can get into it. Just don't quit really early or you'll miss the fun parts of the games. You'll also understand why it's good to go to Dunes at 15, nothing lower .

Guild Wars - Xavier Lucifer & Charlize the Necro

I agree with the posts from before so I will not repeat too much of what they said. One thing that was mentioned a lot was a grind. Yes, it is a grind. But you can look at that in the positive or the negative. Since I want to be positive here I'll go down that path.
1) You can use the grind to explore different areas. True, there are 'optimal' areas for each level to party in, but to change things up again party in a different zone against creatures of a similar level.
2) Find a group or people that you like to play with. Whether you're getting 200xp per kill or 15 xp per kill, if you're playing with people you like, you'll have more fun.
3) Like a previous poster mentioned, you will be asked to change sub-jobs. Like the same poster said, say no. YOU are the one playing the game. Be an individual. I'm not saying to go out and be a BLM/WAR (somone might find a use for that) but play what you want to play. I have RL friends that bust on me for my job combos because they aren't desired. Oh well, I'm paying to play the way I want to.
4) Tired of leveling? Take a breather... craft, fish, beat up low level mobs that don't stand a chance. There were times I was tired of leveling and I would go weeks in-game where I didn't level at all. I quested, did missions, farmed, even tried out gardening (boy that can be frustrating). Like practically every MMO out there there is more to the game than just leveling.
Have fun with it.

Hiya ^^
I've been playing FFXI for like a two years now, and trust me it's not too late to start playing ^^
There's tons of things to do on FFXI other than just grind lol, with their last update they added the "Coliseum" which is really fun whie waiting for a party, but yeah; The Wings Of The Goddess Expansion pack is coming out this winter
But anywho, won't have to worry about the silly Zilart or CoP missions, they're not all that hard, the CoP missions just take time is all!
but simple and clear FFXI isn't all about grinding for levels and such, if you get bored of that, go raise a chocobo, go craft some stuff, do the mini-missions and what not
The format of the game is pretty simple, and the job system isn't hard to learn at all, basicly you have a choice of the basic jobs when you first create your charcter, which are:
Warrior(WAR): A DD (Damage Dealer Job) they do the damge in the party, they use axes, swords, Great Axes, etc.... but a good job to pick if you're into beating the hell out of stuff lol also they can be used as a tank in the party in lower levels.
Monk (MNK); Pretty much the same deal as WAR, MNK is a DD too, they fight with their fist (duh lol) and they're not all that hard to get the hang of, stand around and beat the hell of of stuff, best sub for MNK...would be...idk i never played MNK :P
White Mage (WHM): Well if you played any FF games you can pretty much figure the role of the white mage in FFXI, if not then here.... the role of the WHM is to keep the party alive, with their healing magic and buffing the party's defense, one of the cool things about WHM is they can teleport themselves and party members, which is also a good way to make cash, but you can only start teleporting people around 37+ after getting the scrolls needed to teleport people! sub jobs: BLM, SMN and i guess RDM lol
Black Mage (BLM): Ah, the BLM, lol wanna guess their role? well the BLM is used to blow stuff up with their Black Magic spells, a very nice job to have in the party
Red Mage (RDM): The Red Mage is a type of hybird of Black Mage and White mage; they can also use swords and shields unlike WHM and BLM; the RDM isn't just a basic mix, they also have their own uniqueness just like any other job in the game, they're used to dispell monsters and they can play the role of white mage or black mage, Red mageis one of the best solo jobs in the game... BST is too >.>
Thief (THF): Well this job is great for making gil ^^; they are able to "Steal" "Mug" and they also add a better drop rate of items! Lets not forget about the THFs lovely "Sneak Attack" and "Trick Attack" which makes THFs the ONLY job in the game that can make a monster go for someone else, such as the tank in the party
lol well those are the basic jobs, there is another 9 jobs which you have to do a quest to unlock when you get your first job to level 30 ^^
well i hope this helps, hopefully I will see you in the land of Vana'diel!
blah!
