I agree with the author of the article. I don't like voice chat. It ruins the mood of the game for me.
I think it would be better to hold off until there is some kind of voice synthesis software. Now that would be awesome. Actually sounding like that dwarf barking out grumpy orders, instead of hearing a squeaky voice on the other side.
Most everyone is for Voice Comm, and they tell those that prefer not to use it to go find people to play with that don't want to instead of complaining .
I'm not entirely sure of what to say about this truthfully. I imagine that anybody who's afraid of hearing an 11 year old talk to them is probably upset that they're being taught by an 11 year old most likely. Wake up and smell the huge piece of crap in your living room please. There's not a possibility of you being able to communicate faster and more efficiently through typing during a situation that involves movement and action. Why is this? Oh, because you will be standing still. If you have auto-run on, guess what? Your movement is easily anticipated so you can expect to not have that get you very far.
Most of the people here argue that people in real life do not sound like their characters in the video game. Well how do you know that? Are you their character? Does every muscle bound thick headed individual in the world have an incredibly deep voice that causes tremors throughout the earth? How about short stocky people with long beards... Do they all live in caves and make weapons? The answer is no and the problem is that what you invision is different than what others do. The argument of voices not matching characters is moot because I'm sure that you don't sound like what your character is supposed to sound like all the time, do you?
Typing is for noobs? Ha, quite the contrary. I can type anywhere between 40-90 WPM depending on how relaxed I am, but do I prefer to type? Not in the least. As a matter of fact, if we're talking about roleplaying here, I imagine in my brain that I'm sitting in a computer room with my buddies while we talk to one another... And guess what? I can imagine them talking as whatever I have in my brain and they fit their character just fine. Is it not true that we're supposed to use our imaginations here? Truth be told, if a statement of - Typing is for the newbies - is going to be thrown out there, then I say - Graphics are for the newbies - and I can be 100% correct in my opinion too! Faaaantastic!
I also don't agree with the person who talked about making fun of people due to their accent and whatnot. Do you walk up to people on the street that you hear talking and say - Go back over seas you accent user! I can't stand how you talk! - ? I doubt it.
When you were a kid, did people not listen to you because of your voice? Most likely they didn't listen to you for other reasons, because the message is what's important and most people with any sort of maturity would know that. I'll probably get banned for saying all of this but I could care less, it's my opinion just as all of you are posting yours.

It's not just killing the mood of a game. I would prefer typing over voice chat simply because with words I can express myself safer. If one is using voice chat, anything that comes out will get through to the other ends. With that if you spurt out something you don't meant, you can't take it back. At least with typing you always have a safety net by deleting the line before hitting enter.

Exactly the way I see it. Also, if you don't have a cheap ass mic then music shouldn't be coming through it. I have a logitech headset that came with BF2 and even it isn't that cheap that noises come through.
Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open. Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.

Liking or disliking a voice is also personal I guess, I've had people say they love my voice and I've had someone say they hated my accent. (And I happen to be 22 years old and not gay ( no offense boys, but you know... ))

ok well im no RP person, but not having VC ruins the game for me, i wouldnt be able to play MMO's without my vent server, it adds a sence of getting to know someone and the people you play with better, especialy with guilds, vent is a way to get to know everyone, being quite in my book is a easy way not to get noticed. If your chillen with a friend and doing something and you talk to them they dont just ignore you or write on a piece of paper there responce, no, they TALK!
point being not all of us are RP's, some of us know where playing a game, and treat it as such. Vent or any other voice program= getting to know people and enjoying the game. Because of vent now i have a tight nit group of online and RL friends playing games together, and we can talk about w/e we want.
Nice article. I agree, its definately a mixed bag with voice chat. There are times when it helps and many times when it can be really weird, annoying, or just unneccessary. Not to mention, in almost any situation, VC kind of kills immersion.
Honestly, I could really care less if VC didnt exist, even though I will use it at times. But, I dont think theres ever a situation in MMOs when its absolutely neccessary, these games just arent that hard.

For me typing is part of the gaming experience just like WSAD and the mouse.
It's part of the mechanical challenge of translating your thoughts and strategy into moves in the game.
