This looks like a game I'd like to try, but how populated it it? The offical forums give the impression of a small population, with very few low levels. Is that true, or do I misunderstand?
The population when i played was fair, yes the game is top lvl heavy it seems, but that really doesnt matter in a game like that, it is a close knit community and they do a good job at weeding out the jerks, If you do decide too play seek out some higher lvl people and talk too them, you will need higher lvl people too survive, its a nice game, wish i still could afford too play it, but financially i can not at this time.
The link shows the skill tree, which branches off every 50 level and most people have several low level skills to work on - which makes it easy to form a team.
When I played on the ML I personally rarely ran into anyone. I was told that most interactions you have with other players in this game is through guilds, I of course did not have one being new, so the game felt extremely desolate and empty =(
So I belive, the population is fair..not up there with eq2 or anything but decent, its just maybe players are to spread out across the land or somthing. No idea =(
The population is small but very addicted and helpful. I don't want to tell you that is easy actually to find teams but the nature of the game requires you to have some initiative. I spoke with both kind of players, some who found hardly to team and the ones that had the way to continue their journey. They are still in game.
Try it as it's free and see by yourself. The game worth it.
I just started recently and have become quite hooked. (I am going to subscribe soon) There are lots of people in the noob area and three levels of chat, area (near you), regional, and universe. You can get any questions answered almost immediately any time of day/night in the universal chat, and finding people to help you in regional chat is quite easy. The game is very innovative in many aspects and quite addictive.
So you wouldnt look into a good game because its not populated enough?
What has population to do with the quality of a game or with the fun you can have playing it?
Ryzom has a relatively small population but it never feels deserted, it feels quite lively actually most of the time, thanks to the uni channel among others :P
I dont know how many low levels but i can see newcomers to mainland all the time and there are players asking to group in all level ranges.
Also with more players trying it, might become crowded at some point

I played this game for quite some time and population isnt that bad, dont expect to be able to team all the time, people teilling you that teaming is no problem are lying, period. As said i played this for almost a year and got several masters in the game, but be very happy most things up to lvl 170 are pretty soloable since you WILL have a hard time finding a team at certain times a day. I think the guy saying 200-400 ppl on Arispotle is probally right, thou i would say it are 400-500.
Also rethink if you want to invest any RL time in this game, the one who bought the game is being awefully quiet about the direction of the game. On the official forum you can find post from all players, from all servers asking for an update on status and if, after 3 years, any new content will finally come out. A half year is past since GameForge bought this game and it seems they are waiting for it to die. The outcry for some responses from officials are almost heartbreaking, since they are coming from people playing this game since start and those people are starting to get on their last legs....
IMHO there will be no Saga in a year...
And im not saying that cuz i hate this game..... i simply love it.

I started playing Ryzom about a week ago. I heard a few good things about it on the forums here and decided to try it. It's free after all right? I initially wanted to find something to occupy my time until some of the new releases on the horizon come out. Lo and behold, I love it! It hasn't replace the empty feeling I got when I quit SWG years ago, but it is damn close.
For my next few statements, I'll assume you know nothing of sandbox type games. (Sorry if I insult you there, just want to make sure to cover all angles.) You make your own fun. There are no quests sending you to the next logical grind spot, but there is always something to do. You can be as high or as low of a level as you choose. Is a higher level more effective? Sure, but it isn't imperative that you be max level to enjoy the bulk of the game.
The community is rather small. I must agree with that, however you will meet people from around the world on the same server. There is always someone online and they truely do LOVE helping new people. The GMs are friendly and active. I saw one my first day and she was very helpful in uni chat. This is without a doubt the single best community I have ever been a part of in an MMO. That in itself is a good enough reason for me to give 15 a month.

Yeah top heavy doesn't matter all that much, here's why:

A witty saying proves nothing.

Arispotle: 200-400 subscribers?

There are a ton of new people on the noob island.

"noob" island isnt the main land, the community in Ryzom is quiet small, if you're antisocial i dont think this game is for you.
but its one of the best community, very helpful if you dont act like a idiot.
