It seems there are a growing number of posts stating dissatisfaction with WoW. This is not a knock on the game, it's simply an observation. But history shows that all games, including MMOs have a lifespan. Many of the older ones may still survive, but are not thriving as they once did. Which makes me wonder...what's going to happen when the most popular one of all reaches the end of its life? I'm not saying this will happen any time soon, it's still incredibly popular. But it will happen. What then? Will there be another game, or perhaps more than one, by then that will fulfill gamers desires? Or will it mark the end of MMOs as a serious game genre?
I know Blizzard is now working on a new game, they seem to recognize WoW's eventual inevitable demise. But will their new game meet or even surpass WoW's popularity. There's no guarantee. I for one am hopeful that the MMORPG keeps evolving and growing so as to survive for many years to come. It's a game style with so much potential, but it must keep improving.

quite simple all those people will go for the next MMO that's most game like, and can run on extremely low end computers by this forums standards. we're talking 256 MB of RAM and 64 MB of VRAM for WoW at the moment. by the time WoW loses it touch it'll be 512 MB or RAM and 128 MB of VRAM.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Your not giving Blizzard fans enough credit! WoW may not live up to the engrossing fun and entertainment value that many previous MMO's did for the hardcore MMO crowd, but rarely does Blizzard ever lose their fans.
I'm a fan of Blizzard through and through, they make some damn good games that live up to the hype and replayability that so many other game devs can only dream about! For instance look at the original Starcraft, 10yrs old and still being played by hundreds of thousands of ppl everyday.
Anyway, yeah I've played WoW alot, have over 10 chars at lvl 60 or higher, 1 at lvl 70...and yeah I get bored and pissed off at the game all the time, end up quitting and cursing that I'll never return. Only to find myself back a few weeks or months later. Blizzard holds theirs fans very close and never lets go even when you bitch, moan, and complain on the way out. They know you'll return....

Once it reaches the end of it's days it will be like all the ones before it. Something new will come out people will flock to and the cycle will continue.
Well, theres a few things that we can probably be pretty sure about:
1) No MMO in the near future will match WOW's success.
2) WOW will follow the same population curve as every other MMO.
3) Many of the MMO virgins that WOW brought into the genre either wont have the pc or the interest to stick around after WOW.
So, once the current crop of WOW clones fail to meet expectations and fade away into mediocrity, you'd have to think the genre will pretty much be right back where it was before WOW.
hmm what will happen after wow you ask?? ......... The end of the world.

Night Elf Legolases will grow up and start looking for jobs ( at least some of them...i hope).
The end of WoW is not going to be the end of MMORPGs. Just like UO and then EQ people will move on to play the next generation of MMORPGs. Heck, who even knows how long WoW will stay around. EQ1, DAOC all these games are still running. I wager WoW will be around for a long long time. In fact, after the honeymoon period for AoC and WAR, you may find posts about people going back.
I expect a large exodus from WoW in the next few months. But WoW will survive.
