I am a vet from about 2 months after release, I have had 5 Jedi 2 of which were pre-patch 9. I still own 3 and I must say that at first I hated it with a passion. I couldn't figue out the controls and was so weak anything could kill me.
Well after a nightmareish first day I decided to get educated on this NGE stuff. So I searched the boards and found out how to set up my controls so it would feel like the "SWG of Old" and that worked very well. The combat felt like it should. I set the radial dial key back to normal and read some more about the expertise trees.
I then discovered there is a UI MOD that brings back the old UI but I chose not to use it as of yet..... the new UI isn't that bad once your use to it.
Anyway I Saw that my entertainer now has an abundance of buffing options you can acually create numerous buffs for all kinds of stats and they are very good...... much better than pre-cu imo.
I am still trying to figure out what gear to buy / craft and what crafting proffs can make money in here but over all I say I'll be staying here for some time. On the surface the game looks and feels like what most of us complain about but if you give it a chance it is more indepth now than pre-cu.
I have found out that if you own any of the following items you can get rich fast,
Neutron Pixe
Rancors, Kimos, Gnarl or whatever they are called
Sunriders Destiny sells for around 300m on most servers
Pretty much anything that can't be crafted now, I am sure the list is long but the above were common before so most of you have them.
Anyway the game runs smooth, you still have turn off shaders and etc follow the post pinned to SWG Current. Overall it looks the same. I think a big problem I am facing is that my Jedi is no longer an Alpha class and that I will get over with time. The game is good and I am sick of bouncing from MMO to MMO and waiting for the WoW clones to come out just to be decipointed. I figure hey I better give the game I love a second chance and so far I am glad I did.
This is still a game that takes knowledge and skill to be good at and this is what sets it apart from the slew of MMO's out there.
All you need to do is load the game and log in for your trial to start you do not need a key or anything just load in like normal .... only thing you can't do is post on SWG forums until you re-sub.
OH and what ever you do don't delete any character if you have 3 slots you will not get it back if you do. It was a bug that we got it and the bug has been fixed recently.
Comments
Yes, anything that can no longer be crafted is worth an immense amount. My smuggler still has a neutron pixie recipe for 1000 units... if I ever get around to making them I'll be a gazillionaire.

The game hardly runs well system-wise currently.
Even the current shift of developers lament on how aging the engine is and how the spaghetti code makes it extremely difficult to find legacy bugs and change legacy systems.
Put it this way in terms of server performance / game performance-
I started SWG in 03 playing the 3rd beta phase. I was using a pc equipped with a xp1800 / 512mb of pc2100 ddr / Geforce 3 Ti200
The game then played well, with very little fps lag on its meduim settings. Over the course of 4 years, my PC has undergone several improvements all in the name of better performance for better pvp. CPU went from the xp1800 to a barton core xp2500 + 1 then 2 gigs of 2100ddr and a GPU upgrade to a ati 9700pro. Game still performed seemingly well and excelled much better in larger pre-cu pvp fights. CU time, PC got upgraded again. XP3200,2 gigs of pc4000 dual channel mated with an ATI X800pro. Now with the newest rig, the game still ran extremely well despite new particle effects from the CU. Hang on,im geting to the pint of all this.
That latest rig barely ran the Restuss pvp battle. It was an amazing ingame slide show for an event but the fact that I ran the game with less powerful hardware and had better results until a major code change should say something. The NGE player speed just cannot be processed by the aging SWG engine.
My newest rig-AMD x2 6000 dual-core / 4 gigs of matched pc6800 / 2 8800 gts's running in SLI......And the game still runs erratically when in heavily populated areas although for the first time ever I could crank up the settings to full bore max settings and maintian a 30fps.
The servers are getting much smaller player wise, the recent housing purge cleaned up some of the db...so why oh why is the game still running so poorly...especialy for larger pvp encounters?
The core is showing its age and isnt scaling with new technology well at all.

More in depth than pre cu? Can you say Shill
You just bounced into one more WoW clone.
I'm playing LOTRO atm and it's pretty much a WoW clone too for some parts, but atleast it works smoothly and i would give the NGE 1 more change if they just fixed up the horible gameplay, fat wookie jedis, lack of diversity and animations.
Welcome back, get the ui mod and you'll be more happy http://www.anach.tk

I am loving the game more and more now ....... The problem most vets have IMO is they expect to login and be the Alpha Class that you once were....... well I will say this so much in the game has changed with all the reverse eng. Mods that can be added to your clothing. Hell even your Saber / Weapons can have a socket now and an AA can be placed in it. A VET that returns expecting to jump right in and OWN or even compete in PVP or PVE for that matter will be very disappointed. It took me like 2 days to figure out that Jedi while wearing the Elder rob can now wear Bando, Boots, Golves, Undershirt and belt or PSG with +35 to a slew of different stat combos. The SEA's are all crafted by players now bringing life back to crafters.
Anyway I know what SOE did to us was wrong, very wrong but the game is good now without a doubt.
Oh and to the preformance problems just have to search around and change a few settings and the game runs great. Anyway cya ingame or not it's up to you.
Not all of us vets are "star wars kid clones" ya know buddy.
It wasnt all about teh lightsabre for us.
Wich means it wasnt about being a alpha. It was about a rather unique game, that offered game for all playstyles... Not a wow clone, not a alpha class.
The last of the Trackers
With over 3/4 of the players wanting to play Jedi at the time I targeted them. The point is the new system takes time to master and most get frustrated.
As far as offering unique game play, well it still does too bad most won't tkae the time to learn it but just come here and complain about what can't be changed.
Explain how it is possible to have multiple "Alpha" classes.
Target audience FTL.
Well the way the game is setup now it's not just a defence stacked jedi that is "Alpha" now. In PvP a BH and commando and spy can also claim "Alpha" if they have spent time to really learn to play in the new system/expertise/buffs/equipment.
Ruckup, a few questions:
What server?
How is the pop there?
Is it possible to pick-up group all the way up to max level?
How has the "Combat Downgrade" effected the ability to solo in light of a supposed lack of pop? Did they simply lengthen the grind?
Is it possible to be financially ok based off just combat xp?
Do people pvp in space?
Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice.
OK your having a nice experiance and wish to inform us of all the swell improvments to the game. Like tweaking your controls to make the game more playable and being able to sell prenge stuff for a mint. Like our pre nge pets? our freinds compadres amigos? Not for all the creds on a server. To think of all the times i ranger tracked for pets across the galaxy countless hours spent cruising corella, looking for the great plains stalker baby that never spawned for me.
You know when i quit i gave everythng away but a few special pets and rewards, even a blacksun helm to a newb i never knew.
When i started the game i remember being dropped at mos eisley with little more than the clothes on my back scared to death and fighting clawing my way up learning about a very complex and special game. To become a MRM MCH Ranger Tracker.
So much effort for what to be whiped out by corporate greed. And if i start playing again shouldnt i expect the same? Fool me once...
Perhaps SOE should of considered the old homesy wisdom of Ben Franklin, One in the hand... But methinks SOE"s motto is theres a suker born every minute.
No sale man. Not for all the credits on the server.... because SOE is still behind the wheels....
I understand the frustration m8 with SOE, the game is good again .... PLayer base? PLay on Bria no problems finding people there all day and night . As for Ranger try Beastmaster/Medic a nice combo of heals and pets, Oh and you can keep your pets if you want to I din't tell u to sell them.
That is indeed SOE's motto. Another one is "The customer is always wrong", which is amazing considering that SOE's whole livelyhood, and the incomes of every employee depends on their customers paying them another $14.99 the next month...
Or does it more depend on Spideman sequels?
Either way, SOE is poison, cancer, disease, you name it, to anything they touch. They are forever tainted and will likely never see another even middling success.
For me, as I'm sure many others will say the same thing, it had more to do with the lack of variations in templates as well as a stale form of combat. I was happy with the fact that as a swordsman there were certain mobs I couldnt even scratch due to not have the ability to do certain types of damage. This added an uncertainty that caused you to be aware of your enemies capabilites.
So many other reasons why the NGE made me leave that are too numerous to mention, but the result is the same. The NGE was, and still is, a huge let down. I can appreciate the fact that some people do indeed enjoy it now, but I can find several other MMO's that are more enjoyable then the NGE but non that are as fun as pre-CU was.
So, the question that must be asked is given the choice what would you be playing? Pre-CU or post-NGE?

"With over 3/4 of the players wanting to play jedi at the time i targeted them." ? As in the target audience? wth. are you Smed?
And yes i was FS but i was in no hurry to become jedi i looked at it as content for the future and having to much fun to be bothered with something as mundane as jedi.
"The point is the new system takes time to master and most get fustrated" You mean like the old system took time to master and was too complex? But i thought the point of the NGE was to make the game simpler and made more appealing to a broader audience. So the changes have not really delivered in that area after all? What a shock i,m stupified after all of SOE's bluster about doing what is best for the long term health of SWG. To think they cannot deliver. /sarcasm off
And the most shocking part is people have to try and convince us "cynical dissidents" That the game has really improved and worth trying again. Like we weren't content to play the game we had.
Maybe it has actually improved but Soe's customer relations have not. Since the CUNGE. We were told in no uncertain terms that if we did not like the changes we could go play someone else's game. And we did, We were told that theres a problem, that people liked to play the forums more than the game. Like it was our fault the forums were funner than the bugfest known as CUNGE. We were told we were a vocal minority of 2/3 the games over all population. Good customer relations come by building bridges not burning them digging in and lobbings bombs like those at the other side. If SOE wanted good customer relations they would eat crow and grovel at our feet.
It just boggles the mind that someone has to come in here scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to drum up support for a game that could of been a main competitor to WOW but will now never even come close. And as for "what cant be changed" The fat lady aint sung yet. hehe go ducks.
So no dice i will wait for the emu which appears to have a better than 50-50 shot of completion now. It may be SOE and LA will take exception to it and offer resistance. But they may end up fighting a Hydra in an unwinnable battle.Just like they have done these last 2 years. Time will tell...Ive waited this long i can wait a little longer to taste the sweet freedom of a precu server.

what if...for some strange reason, SOE gave the old elder/vets that had multiple accounts a chance to activate one of their accounts for free for a lifetime. i wonder if it's enough to repopulate the servers and eventually, they start to resubscribe their other accounts back in when they see familiar people and friends playing again........
nah! who am i kidding, thats even a galaxy more far far away than SWG:NGE.

The main reason why I believe that the primary cause for SWG not having classic servers is ego and not money (when it'd make them more money is this in a nutshell: It's FAR easier to buy the notion that introducing SWG classic would bring in more subs and revenue (especially given the outcry against NGE) than it is to buy the concept that introducing a new system that F's over the current customers in favor of somehow attracting a vast NEW player base...
NGE: Was illogical.
SWG Classic: Makes sense, in that it not only brings in more revenue for sure, but it improves SOE's industry leading bad PR.
How, then, do you explain that they don't go for this other than ego, when SOE AND LEC are companies that would trample their own mothers to grab a buck?
I explain it the way I have elsewhere- the money alledged to be made by switching back to classic is not enough to offset the total costs incurred by this debaucle and produce a payback before the game is sunsetted in three to four years.
If SOE was a privately-held company, say "Smedley's House of Game Development, Hosting and Customer Reaming," then I could buy the ego argument. That is not the case here. Smed et al have a fiduciary duty to put aside personal preferences and do what is in the best interest of the company. Failure to do so opens them to all kinds of tort, pain far beyond whatever "face" they might save today. We're talking about personal liability here- the loss of homes, cars, boats, cash, livelihood, with the kicker of prison time.
Do you really believe they would leave themselves vulnerable, in the age of Worldcom and Enron, over the second rate MMO SWG has become?
You must really hate these guys.

Believe it or not, SOE is a privately owned company. It's held by corporate entities but it does not have to answer to stockholders Per Se. Virago posted on this about a month ago when some1 brought it up on the forums that they had Sony stock and SOE should answer to them about subscription numbers.
The case with Enron/Worlcom is a little different. I haven't read the reporters on specifics, but I believe the jist was that they lied/mis-represented the facts to investors/stockholders thereby commiting criminal fraud.
And fiduciary duty is not a constant. Even Enron defendants made the defense of mistake. It's all up the jury/Judge to decide. And to get into individual civil penalty, one would first have to pierce the corporate vail. Not all that hard to do with Two Guys In A Pickup, Inc. but not so easy with the structure of a company like SOE.
So, he could be right, it could be ego and they are setting behind their corporate vail feeling quite secure.
Maybe intresting below aswell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidiary
Sony Online Entertainment LLC a subsidiary of Sony . A subsidiary, in business, is an entity that is controlled by another entity. The controlled entity is called a company, corporation, or limited liability company, and the controlling entity is called its parent (or the parent company). The reason for this distinction is that an individual cannot be a subsidiary of any organization; only an entity representing a legal fiction as a separate entity can be a subsidiary. While individuals have the capacity to act on their own initiative, a business entity can only act through its directors, officers and employees.
The most common way that control of a subsidiary is achieved is through the ownership of shares in the subsidiary by the parent. These shares give the parent the necessary votes to determine the composition of the board of the subsidiary and so exercise control. This gives rise to the common presumption that 50% plus one share is enough to create a subsidiary. There are, however, other ways that control can come about and the exact rules both as to what control is needed and how it is achieved can be complex (see below). A subsidiary may itself have subsidiaries, and these, in turn, may have subsidiaries of their own. A parent and all its subsidiaries together are called a group, although this term can also apply to cooperating companies and their subsidiaries with varying degrees of shared ownership. When ownership is not shared, so that a subsidiary is wholly owned, it is called a branch. A subsidiary is different from a branch in that the former is jointly owned by the parent company and others while the latter is completely owned by the parent company.
Subsidiaries are separate, distinct legal entities for the purposes of taxation and regulation. For this reason, they differ from divisions, which are businesses fully integrated within the main company, and not legally or otherwise distinct from it.
Subsidiaries are a common feature of business life and few if any major businesses do not organise their operations in this way. Examples include holding companies such as Berkshire Hathaway[1], Time Warner, or Citigroup as well as more focused companies such as IBM, or Xerox Corporation. These, and others, organize their businesses into national or functional subsidiaries, sometimes with multiple levels of subsidiaries.
An operating subsidiary is a business term frequently used within the United States railroad industry. In the case of a railroad, it refers to a company that is a subsidiary but operates with its own identity, locomotives and rolling stock.
In contrast, a non-operating subsidiary would exist on paper only (i.e. stocks, bonds, articles of incorporation) and would use the identity and rolling stock of the parent company.
Reasons why a company may have subsidiaries
The following are common reasons why companies have subsidiaries, but no list can ever be exhaustive.
Control
The word "control" used in the definition of "subsidiary" is generally taken to include both practical and theoretical control. Thus, reference to a body which "controls the composition" of another body's board is a reference to control in principle, while reference to being are able to cast more than half of the votes at a general meeting, whether legally enforceable or not, refers to theoretical power. The fact that a company has a holding of less than 51% which, because the holdings of others are widely dispersed, gives effective control is not enough to give that company 'control' for the purpose of determining whether it is a subsidiary.
In Australia, for instance, the accounting standards defined the circumstances in which one entity controls another. In doing so, they largely abandoned the legal control concepts in favour of a definition that provides that 'control' is "the capacity of an entity to dominate decision-making, directly or indirectly, in relation to the financial and operating policies of another entity so as to enable that other entity to operate with it in pursuing the objectives of the controlling entity." This definition was adapted in the Australian Corporations Act 2001: s 50AA.
The subsidiary can also be made with the intent to defraud the investor, and therefore a court should keep in mind as to for what reasons the subsidiary has been made.
