Which game to try?

As so many else out there im dying to try something new now.. In the last couple of months theres just not much more for me to do in WoW.

We raid and progress good, but everything else than new boss fights bores me to hell.

I want to try some of the other games out there. Give them a shot. I've done this before, and i'll just list them here to rule them out:

EQ2: Didnt like the models. The animations were poor too. Couldnt immerse myself.

CoX: Great fun, great char customization. But theres not much to do other than 495.935.332 quests telling you to do exactly the same.

SWG: Im a star wars fanatic. But the controls in this game put me off. I had a hard time figuring out if i actually attacked something or not. And which target i attacked.

LOTRO: Played the open beta. Very shallow, bad animations.

Generic korean grinder (Silkroad, 9Dragons, 2moons, ryzom etc etc): No.

I think i've exhausted the game list (leaving only EVE to try out). But there might be a nice pearl out there which i've totaly overlooked.

It doesnt have to be in any specific setting (Fantasy, Scifi etc). There just has to be some nice immersion, looks and animations. Poor animations turn me off instantly.

Diverse quests. Good avatar evolvement, Meaningful skills and a minimum of grinding.

Any ideas as to which game i should try, and why?

    Ryzom? lol

    Anyway...I'd recommend Guild Wars...

  • KilmarKilmar Member UncommonPosts: 844

    Ryzom is a french grinder.

  • SidarkunSidarkun Member Posts: 60

Yeah i think i got ryzom mixed up with something else. Think it might have been Rappelz. Ok, so i think i havent tried Ryzom yet. The reason i have been avoiding GW, is because i've read somewhere that a) You cant jump, b) restricted world. I like idea with wow, that you can go anywhere you like.

    Final Fantasy XI.

Has some of the most immersive quests/mission that you'll find in an mmorpg, the storyline of the original game itself and the expansion packs are nothing but spellbinding. Although the game does require a bit of a grind (almost requiring you to be in a group at all times to proficiently level) there is also plenty of content to keep you busy at almost every level so your not forced to only grind for seventy levels before you can experience any real part of the game. Endgame is also something of an oddity in itself, you could spend five months getting to the highest level of the game and spend nearly two years taking part in the endgame and still have plenty of ground left to cover, definitely something to look forward to on your endeavors to endgame as a lowbie. The game is also patched frequently with new and entertaining content and events. Final Fantasy XI also relies on the community interacting with each other in order to properly advance in the game, so needless to say if someones acting out in a matter that displeases most people (which at this point in the game is very rare) that player won't get very far without realising he's going to have quite a bit of trouble advancing in the game.

Although this game has been out for five years, the graphics are still quite amazing (including the graphics of the animations for spells, summons, weapon-attacking animations). Also, contrary to belief the population of this game is not dead, its still going strong and with the recent announcement of the "Welcome back campaign" its only going to go up. If that wasn't enough, Final Fantasy XI is due for a brand-new expansion pack soon to be released, along with a rumoured (I say rumour because I remember someone posting a link to an SE interview, but I can't remember where) DirectX9 graphics upgrade so that not only will the maximum FPS of 30 be increased, but so will the graphics of the game itself and an official windower PC users have been begging SE for, for so many years. All of this is due around the release of the new expansion pack on November 20th.

Thanks for the answer. Yeah i remember i wanted to try this game. I just never figured out how to download a trial. I can't remember if it was even possible. If you could guide me in any direction that could help me out trying this game, i would be greatful.

Oh btw, theres a lot of new games just around the corner, which looks like being awesome. On the top of my head: WAR, AoC, Aion, Pirates of the burning sea, Chronicles of spellborn etc. But theyr ofcourse Juuuust out of reach for now.

Unfortunately the only trial for this game will cost you around $3 and its only for the basic game, no expansion packs. On top of that I don't think it can be digitally downloaded.... sad, I know. I think the only way to try out the game for free would be to somehow get a hold of the Final Fantasy XI discs and a buddy key (I have a spare one I can give you if your able to do step one).

Ahh i think thats actually the reason why i havent tried it yet. Im not gonna buy anything i haven't tried yet. Partly because im so picky and hard to satisfy (IM talking about games, OK?!?!).

I'm FFXI fanboi, so yeah try this game. Someone who have bought  FINAL FANTASY XI: The Vana'diel Collection can give you a Buddy pass. I'd do it, but I got the game and packs separately so I don't have free pass to give.

Visit FFXI section and ask for it.

OK, only thing i need then is the game client. As far as i understood you cant really download it anywhere?

  • sa1yamansa1yaman Member Posts: 272

It should let you download it. Click on the link (blue button), enter a buddy key in the pop up window and click on the download button.

That's at least theory, I'm not able to verify it.

  • Katashi-kunKatashi-kun Member Posts: 517

I'm unable to provide you with the 30-day free buddy pass, but here is the link that is on a buddy-pass to DL the game client.

     http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/trial/index.html

If you can get ahold of a buddy pass, give the whole 30 days time a try.  FFXI can be very overwhelming for newcomers and especially just starting out.  It takes a very long time to save up the gil for starter gear and spells but its all so very worth it in the end.  There is so much to do in this game, and as stated above there is always something to do at every lvl, including the endless end-game experience.

Major Hint:  The Auction House is your very best friend, learn how to use it well to advance faster!

I've played for over 3 yrs and still never finished all of the storyline and end-game content and with the new exp this Nov, I'm gonna get even further behind.  FFXI is amazing and one hell of a ride, especially the storyline, its just so captivating and makes you want to know more and more.

Report back and let us know if you liked it!

Now im looking for the same thing as Sidarkun with the lil difference that im not going to try FFXI... I didn't like any FF part... MMOFPS turned me on but all I found were bullshit, except Neocron 2, but I played that für 1 year and its booring by now... no good MMOFPS coming up, i checked them all! and I can't find a good MMORPG for me atm... any hidden ones someone knows with PvP-skill-based action? Im totaly pissed off of killing NPC's!

please help, looked already 6+ hours...

I have been searching for a new refreshing game and like most of you I have played wow for a long time and am bored of it. The only games that grab my attention seem to be tabula rasa and war. Guess i will try both out when they are released and toy around with some free ones in the mean time.

  • Katashi-kunKatashi-kun Member Posts: 517

If your really looking for something different, that has the best story of all MMOs out there, give FFXI a try.

Dont get me wrong, wow isnt a boring game per say. Its a brilliant game, and it could satisfy my for nearly 3 years. Its actually the best game i've ever played and i will never regret my time in WoW. But everything good has to come to an end, and for me that end is near. unfortunately it doesnt seem like theres any game out there for the moment that are as well rounded and polished as WoW.

  • VultureSkullVultureSkull Member UncommonPosts: 1,774

Eve is a very polished game, not everyone's cup of tea as it has a Si-fi setting. But it is comparable to WoW in quality.

The problem with playing WoW is that it sets your standard quite high. I have tried EQ2, i too found the animation bad, I tired GWs but my spell bar look really bear with only 8 spells, i tried LOTR and the animations were bad there too.

In the end i went back to WoW and rolled a new class.

I just hope that the new MMORPG games coming out will be of WoW standard else the search will have to continue

    So true!

So you play EVE actively atm?

  • Katashi-kunKatashi-kun Member Posts: 517

OMG, WoW polished!?!?!?!?  That game has so many bugs and errors its crazy!  Yeah they're not detrimental bugs, but they're still there and Blizzard won't do a damn thing about them.  They only care about End-game raiding and PvP now.

If ever something should go wrong with either of those 2 things, the servers come down immediately to have them fixed.  Now take that same scenario with something solo or normal play, and its buried under a mountain as if it was never mentioned.  There are still things from closed beta I mentioned to Blizzard that needed fixed and they're still broken.

I love Blizzard and WoW is a fairly good game, but its far from polished....heh   Oh and games that are well-rounded don't have entire class changes every few months. sheesh

Every game has bugs, tell me one fantasy based MMORPG that is more poilished than WoW, and dont mention EQ2, as the immersion factor with the hi end graphics requirements is a non-starter. I had a mount in EQ2 and when i jumped the horse went straight up in the air with no animation, later on i saw that they had fixed it, but it was too late for me as i had left by then.

Even LOTR has a hi graphics requirement, to get the decent animation you got to but the graphics way up and then  you get a low FPS on even hi powered PC, so that killed it for me. Immersion starts with good and fuild graphics.

Yes i have an active Eve account, although i am levelling a new char in WoW at the moment.

  • BlinkxBlinkx Member Posts: 20

Please don't argue about how good WoW is or what ever, no game is perfect but me and a friend sat together today looking for new games and both of us sayd WoW was just so damn fun and good that all other games we try now are just poor...

so we didn't find a new game and thats why im still asking here for help... please find me a great game and don't talk about how good or not good WoW is...

Games I tried: Neocron2, CoH, AO, WoW, EVE, GW, ragnarok, saga of ryzom, Ultima online, Silkroad, Second life, Shadowbane, RF Online, EQ2, acclaim games and a couple more... all the same, it's all about grinding and some don't even have PvP...

All I realy want is a WoW server with XP for PvP, no battlegrounds, PvP-mode always on and a lil more individuality... but that will never come... I'm totaly in love with PvP... and there is no game like that, or can someone tell me of one? (Neocron2 was damn good too, but not enough players anymore)

I have to agree with this in a sense.  For me Pre TBC was awesome, best game ever, but ever since TBC came out, the entire thing has sucked.  The gear, the talents, the spells, everything.  TBC was the biggest failure I've ever seen imo =P
