Is Lag Always So Bad?

Tried the free trial today around 4pm CST.  Could make character, could log in, could run around...but if I engaged in battle...instant slide show!  Less than 500 on server and still uber lag.  No problems with other on-line games, and with an FX53 and NVidia 5950 running all other games full on flawlessly, don't understand the lag issue here, especially for a game 18 months old.  Would have like to try it, but too frustrating with the awful lag.  I could just imagine with a couple thousand on the server....

it has actually been slightly worse this patch than other patches.  They have had a problem where some of the subservers would crash and cause lag on other servers..

This game is VERY RAM intensive so if you don't want to lag I recommend buying a gig of it.  There are still some memory leaks that I'm almost positive they could fix.  Turn off your sound or lower your graphics to really help your framerate.  It is still a very graphically up to date game for being over a year old.

The game engine lags but most existing AC2 players will deny it. Anyone new and anyone that plays any other smooth running MMO's will notice it. I thought when I upgraded from a GF 3/1.7ghz/512mb to a GF 5900/3ghz/1gb all the lag would be gone and I could run at full. But nope, it seems to perform pretty much the same at all settings. It's playable just not as smooth as most other games. I tried bringing up the poor performance on the official forums and I was just confronted with posts about how something must be wrong with my computer and I must have viruses and spyware. I still play the game though, it could run better but whatever, it's bareable and I got used to it like I think most AC2 players have thus they say there isn't any problems.

It's true.. after I've had the game running for a while my performance gets worse and worse just because it's been running for longer. You can use memory clearing programs to help this.

I think the worst lag problem in this game is the RUBBERBANDING. Particularly when moving vertically.. climbing stairs and mountains, jumping off cliffs, etc. It's almost as if the game is trying to protect you from fall damage by rubberbanding you back to where you were before you hit the bottom. When you're in a dungeon with 20 drudges throwing spears at you and you need to get away, rubberbanding all over the place while trying to escape is very frustrating. I had a particularly bad time with it today, but that was probably because I had some of my upstream being used up by a P2P program. I usually rubberband about 2-3 times an hour, it's nothing major and it's not for huge distances like in SB, but if it happens at the wrong time it is very annoying.

Thanks all, good to know it isn't just me.  I also tried the official forums for an answer and it seems they won't update the game to run on latest generation NVidia cards, instead blaming it on the drivers (NVidia).  Funny how the drivers run all the other most graphically intense games (Farcry for example) flawlessly.  But I guess that is what a free 15 day trial is for...guess I'll search for something else to hold me over until WoW or EQ2...or the SWG expansion...

p.s.  Just a note for Turbine...in this day and age, I shouldn't have to "tweak" anything on a top of the line computer to make your product work.  Your programmers should be able to inlcude common fixes in updates...and when there are dozens of complaints (vocal, so read hundreds who don't post) about the SAME issue, you should make an effort to improve your product...unless, of course, your end game is really "end game"!

Indeed the game is notoriously laggy particularly in some spots (Linvak Tukal, Nepeth), still I do not believe there is another game that has so effectively delivered on the graphics despite being a CPU and RAM whore.  Basically it will eat as much as you throw at it.  Some suggestions:

*Play with antialiasing off.  If you are running nvidia gear, don't use the antialiasing override.

*Volumetric shadows, cloud shadows, trilinear and antrostropric filters are all more trouble than they are worth.  I recommend turning these features off and then you can turn them back on as neccessary.  The game is so damn beautiful that using these filters only slightly increases the rendering.

*Frill draw distance should be set to medium, again, you will not even notice the difference.

*With a decent computer, your main goal is to get the models and textures set as high as possible.

*Sync your refresh rate and use optimal refresh.

*Basically, don't think that your computer is too uber to tone your graphics.  Eventually, you will hit a chime with the graphics where the game runs smoothly and looks awesome.  Keep trying.

Thanks for the suggestions, gave them a try...and zero improvements.  I know there is always a need for some adjustments in the video display menu, but when I run a game that came out in 2002 on a machine/video card that came out in 2004/2003, it should run a little better than playing Doom on an XT1000...don't you think?

Besides, when I have the second to top of the line graphics, what is the point if I have to turn everything off...I tried, game code apparently awful...will try something else.

I do, however, sincerely appreciate the folks who took the time to offer help...bill

I swear the Turbine engine has problems and is ineffecient. Have you tried posting over on the official AC2 tech boards? Maybe another person complaining about the poor performance will get Turbine to notice. Like I said it seems most of the existing players swear up and down the game doesn't lag. Of course most of the people playing now are hardcore fanbois that have been playing from the beginning.

Edit: Heres the posting the I made about the lag a month ago: http://forums.ac2.turbinegames.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4887

Yes, posted originally on AC2 boards in tech and bug issues...then found the thread in general discussion that alludes to Turbine blaming it on NVidia...bah...everything on my machine is current (bios, etc), 1 gig uber ram, etc (ie...purchased power gaming computer from cyberpower) ... lol, I don't have time to piddle with every little thing to get a game to run...and even when I got on, about 100 peeps on the server, so I suspect not worth my time anyway.  Heck, my guild in EQ has about 120 folks in it...and we are a "small" guild...

BTW...I think it is obvious why Microsoft sold to Turbine...after all, would Bill Gate REALLY sell off something he could make money with?

100 people? Euro servers I suppose. I don't understand the whole European server thing. Do the US servers not show up for you on the server list? I find that incredibly stupid on Turbines part. I guess it helps performance but I mean the US servers are find population wise, anywhere from 400-800 people on most times.

Thank you for being among the few current AC2 players who are honest. (IMHO if someone really is a fan of any game they will be honest about it. About the positives and negatives.)

That stuff happening must hurt ... *ouch* especially in the dungeons. I've never had much rubberbanding problems. But I did have some problems with the game world not being drawn fast enough lol. Lag varries for me.

What other MMORPGs have you recently played in the last 3 months? If AC2 is the ONLY one you have played then of course you will not know how much better other MMORPGs perform.

DAoC performs near flawlessly with no lag that will affect gameplay. I've gone over friends houses and watch them play DAoC with ALL options turned to the max possible. Graphics are stunning, in league with AC2 (even though DAoC is a 3rd generation and AC2 is 4th generation game engine.)

Same with AO, and SWG. If there ever are bouts of lag it is because if the internet ISP, issues not related to a player's computer - as long as the player's computer meets recommended game requirements.

Anarchy Online is still THE only MMORPG with the largest freeeekin city ever! One can actually get lost in it. It is roughly the same size as ALL the cities in EQ put together! LOL. It is roughy the size of 4 cities in SWG put together. And there are litterly THOUSANDS of players in this 1 city! You want to test how good your computer performs? See how modern your computer is? Play AO and go into the biggest city with ALL options turned on to the maximum! imageimageimageimageimage  With my GeForce 4, Pent 4, 1 GIG memory computer I have the options up to 1/2 to 2/3 way up whenever I enter the largest city in AO.

The city is in 2 parts. The much smaller part are the docks, player apartments, sewers, tunnels, and wharves. The much larger part (roughly 3 times bigger than the smaller part.) is full of sky scrapers, a park, some docks, TONS of shops and stores, and much, much, much, much, more.

Try turning off music and sound.  For many people this 'solves' the graphics lag.  Non-Sound Blaster cards in general seem to be the best.

Apparently AC2 is one of few games that uses DirectMusic, and while getting some people together to play instruments is oddly pretty cool, some sound cards don't appear to properly support DirectMusic.  That's the best theory I've heard regarding 'sound lag.'

HMMM  , Maybe that explains why every 5 steps or so it will lag when i have a pretty good computer which also made me give up playing the 15 day free trial after couple of hours

Sound problems? Interesting.. you know, I have wondered why I never hear the sounds of my own combat. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy card.

I think I'll try turning off sound and music and see how it runs. image
