Wish: New FAQ Aimed At UO Players

AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

Mutable Realms released a FAQ today that explains why Wish should be a game that appeals to fans of the long running MMORPG "Ultima Online."  Here is a excerpt:

Why should Wish interest me?

Ultima Online was launched to create a wonderful RPG experience in a massive online world where the focus was on the experience and not the mechanics. Since that time, there have been a slew of games, such as EverQuest, that have diverged from these original ideals. As in Ultima Online, Wish creates a world where the focus is on the experience and not the mechanics behind the game. No one plays single-player or pen-and-paper RPGs just to level up, and the same is true in Wish. We have created an interesting and social experience that, in the spirit of Ultima Online, sends players into a world where the gameplay, the world and the story are what is most important.

You can read the FAQ in its entirety at this link.

After seeing what's in Wish and being a veteran UOer, I don't see the comparison.

I'm hoping that other UOers post their experiences here because MR has clearly missed what made UO enjoyable. The ability to have an impact on the game world, and the ability to affect others both negatively and positively (although many chose negatively) were what worked towards making the experience not the mechanics the focus.

Let's take the first few months of UO so that we are comparing a new product with a new product.

    • You could drink to the point of drunk. As a result you would stumble and hiccup. Your character was visibly affected.
    • Speech was overhead, allowing a clear and distinct association between a personand their words. Add to that there was a type of line of sight to speech. If a player goes with his associate into a side room to talk, the others do not hear their conversation. You could duck behind a building to discuss things. There was an immersion to the speech on multiple levels.
    • You can sit. I know that sounds stupid, but when you think about it, being able to utilize the objects inthe game world adds to the experience. A chair is not a static object, rather something you could use to roleplay or even make yourself feel more comfortable.
    • There are things you can do solely to pass time. Chess boards and fishing. Not only to pass time but to do so with others as well.

UO had many elements that allowed for a rich environment, not just aplethora of different paths to level along. THAT is what added to the attraction for UOers and what helped make the experience the focus and not the mechanics.

MR seems to miss what made UO a game where "the focus was on the experience and not the mechanics".

~Hi..Im Tony and have been playing UO for a pretty long time now.

Well in my own opinions of course-A enjoyable game depends on the people who play them. Most peoplesolely look for game where they can kill a mass variety of monsters.Other look for game where combat is trained but so that they can focus on other skill like Mining, Fishing and Smithing.

Here is where UO is special-They have those skills and also very creative skill as in Animal Taming-Musicianship-Arms Lore-Alchemy and different types of combat like fencing, mace fighting, and swordsmanship.

Other game like Runescape make you pay 5$ a month per character. While in UO it is 13$ a month and you can own hundreds of characters-about 5 per shard. Thats another thing that makes Uo enjoyable-More bang for ya buck.

Its community-Other games have free and P2P versions. People who dont pay are usually idiots that beg for your stuff. UO's great community is just well great. When someone drops something, you dont see a mob of player run for it.

Unique- Tame dragons, beetles, swamp dragons and fenzied ostards. Kill a MASS variety of monsters like Lizardmen,Lichlords, and Slayers.

Plus UO-Odyssey is coming out taking the game to a whole new level.

Btw-My best experience-Was when me and my friends Killed out first dragon the someone released in Despise.

I am Claroot-Grandmaster-Soon to be Elder Warrior.
