Flowchart Part II - Is the flow chart shown here accurate?

TalinguardTalinguard Member UncommonPosts: 676

EDIT: I have recreated the chart and have moved it (again).  Look here:

www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/1636513/thread/149750#1636513

After asking this question once I received several good suggestions.  However I'm afraid the way I asked the question lead to some confusion and may have skewed my scores.....

I would like to present the chart again and ask the question:

Is the flowchart representative of many of the more popular MMOG's?  WoW, DAoC, Everquests, Shadowbane, Guild wars, SWG, Horizons, ect.....

Please understand that this flow chart is meant to be a general representation.  It is not an overview of the entire economy.

Also, it is only for cash inflows, not outflows

Remember that income made from other players via crafting, or class specific skills are covered in the green box at the top.  Also receiving gifts is included in the box at the top, giving gifts is a cash outflow.

Red lines represent cash

Green lines represent items

I following the development of this chart from your first post. I think its getting there and it probably covers about 80-90% of the gold/item transactions. You could also add in a spot where unwanted  items are destroyed. Many games have inventory space, and Il be honest ..I have no use or room or 89 beetle eyes while Im farming for some rare ingrediant for a potion.

A destroyed item would be an outflow, not part of what I'm charting here.

Like the OP said though, destroyed items would be outflow, not inflow. The chart is for inflow, so it seems to me like that covers the basic idea.

[EDIT] OP beat me too it.

it will be intresting to see your outflow table and how it handles crafting trees, the wealth is not actualy gained or held by the individual  Avatar(s).

Well I did not vote "no" this time, but I had to put "not sure".

You should remove the flow from cash to vendor/auction, that is probably part out of the outflow, even though it directly comes from drops or whatever.

If you buy stuff in your "inflow" chart then how will you represent that money in the outflow chart?

It is never good to have it in two places.

I would remove the arrows between vendor/auction, it is also two way wich is a bit confusing.

Just dont spend money in your inflow chart, it will just make it harder for you later.

In fact, if you make the flow from cash to player two-way then you will have a very accurate flowchart of ALL cash, both in and out.

Just add an extra box and call it "misc" as in gift to friends, booze, hookers and so on.

I'm not really sure what you are trying  to do and I thought your chart was kind of confusing. I assume you are trying to chart the flow of money and items from their creation in the game world to a player.

Edit: I forgot to add Vendor NPC as an item source. Or for simplicity just change Quest NPC to NPC since you don't care about the outflow of money.

Ahh, yes. I see what you mean. Remove the line on the right edge of cash since that would be outflow. Makes sense.

I think I'm going to work on an inflow and outflow chart.  But your right, I was making outflows in my inflow chart.  Technically it was still accurate, but still confusing.
