I've read quite a few Conan stories, I have a Kull book, I've read the Hyborian essay. I'm completely aware that there is magic in the Conan world. Now that that's out of the way, why did they put in Mages and Priests, which in the Hyborian universe would be essentially the same thing. In Conan, almost all Mages are Priests of some sort. On top of that, there are very few magic users as opposed to fighters and rogues. My estimate would be that, out of every 1000 or so adventurer types (The kind you play in an MMO) in the lore maybe 1 would be a magic user. So why make it so that 1 out of every 2 uses magic. Also, magic doesn't work like, fireball, fireball, summon snakes. Every spell in the universe is a huge challenge for the person it's being cast on. Conan magic is naturally unfair. Which has me wondering why they're letting us play them.
Taking Mage classes out would improve the games connection to the lore, improve ambience (sic) of the game, and with barely any loss to the game, except that the people who like to be Mages in games would have to be something else.

Its an MMO. Thats the best awnser I can give you. There are arguments in every lore based MMO on what should or should not be allowed. When you get down to the base of it though its a game. They need subscribers and players and thoes who are 100% devoted to games will just find another if there class isnt represented. Although from what I have looked at the magic in this game will be somewhat complex and also taxing on your character. Without playing it yet, it leads me to believe even magic users will have to use some sort of melee/ranged combat if they use there magic to much.
Well, I've heard from a lot of previews that the magic users will be "squishy", and that the magic isn't all that taxing. Also the FunCom developers have really been stressing on how strictly to the lore. So far it seems pretty spotless, except for the Mages. And if there weren't Mages, they could still have Priests, which there were a lot of in the lore. Priests were also casting some spells, not quite the amount they have in the game from what I've seen. They were known to cast the odd spell though.
My argument though is that, they had virtually nothing to lose, and just slightly more to gain. From my point of view.
Another name for a Sorcerer is a Mage. The Hyborian universe had 'a load' of them too. More to the point many are active during the reign of Conan as King still, upon the era in which the game is set. As you say alot of mages are also priests of some sort. Funcom did their own take on types within some creditability to the lore but also to appeal to the mmorpg'er. I personally think that mage's are fun to play and taking that away would be bad.

In Kull's time, 8,000 years before the time of Conan, Thulsa Doom was already an undead sorcerer. The flesh of the skull-faced wizard was that of a man long dead, and normal weapons could not harm him.
Now, Thulsa's form is that of a grinning skull with the powers of telepathy, levitation and summoning of demonic servants. Until his body is restored, Thulsa is somewhat limited to defensive sorcery. His current enemy is Thoth-Amon, with whom he contends for control over the serpent-men.
I do believe this is the original character Skelletor from He-Man was patterned after. Supposed to be still active.
Physical Appearance: A thin, wizened man with claw-like fingers, his body concealed beneath rich, volumnious robes. His cackling speech mimics his alias as the Vulture.
This secretive being inhabits the Scarlet Citadel, which adjoins Strabonus' palace in Khorshemish. Tsotha-lanthi's citadel contains horrors that those few who have entered and returned only hint at. For most Hyborian kings, association with sorcerers is an act of desperation; for Strabonus of Koth, Tsotha-lanthi has become an integral part of his government.

Eibon
Eibon, a character in Smith's "The Door to Saturn", was a sorcerer and priest of Zhothaqquah (Tsathoggua). He is renowned as the writer of the Book of Eibon, a tome that, among other things, chronicles Eibon's life, and includes his magical formulae and rites of Zhothaqquah (It is introduced in Smith's tale "Ubbo-Sathla"). Eibon lived in a five-story, five-sided tower made of black gneiss that stood beside the sea on Mhu Thulan. Eibon disappeared shortly after Yhoundeh's premier inquisitor, Morghi, came to his black tower with a writ for his arrest.
When the inquisition came knocking, Eibon fled to Cykranosh (the planet Saturn) through a magic panel given to him by Zhothaqquah. Eibon was never again seen on Earth after that. (When Morghi vanished close on the heels of Eibon, many believed that he was in league with the sorcerer all along and so is largely responsible for the decline in the worship of Yhoundeh.)
Epimetrius:
(Conan of the Isles/Conan Annual#7) - The people of Ptahuacan, the last surviving city of the Atlanteans on Earth, began to magically abduct people from the nearby continent, to serve as sacrifice to their god, Xotli. When people of the kingdom of Aquilonia began to disappear, the spirit of Epimetrius appeared before Aquilonia's king, Conan (now well into his seventh decade). Epimetrius directed Conan to Ptahuacan and gave him an amulet, telling him he'd know how to use it when the time was right.
After much struggle, Conan was confronted by the demonic Xotli in its temple in Ptahuacan. Shattering the amulet, Conan released "the pure force of Mitra, Lord of Light." The energy sphere engaged Xotli, shattering its temple, and eventually banishing the demonic creature as well.
On multiple ocasions i`ve noticed references that Epimetrius would be... MITRA himself... but these are just rumors...
Jalung Thongpa:
Meru was warmed by volcanic activity far below the surface. Thus, despite its isolation in the barren mountains, it maintained a tropical climate. Many of the plants and animals of the Black Kingdoms thrived in Meru's clime.
A god-king or rimpoche ruled Meru. Known as Jalung Thongpa, Terror of Men and Shadow of Heaven, the ever-reincarnating son of Yama; when Jalung Thongpa died, the priests scoured Meru for the child born at the time of the previous Rimpoche's death; this child, no matter how deformed or unfit, was declared Jalung Thongpa's reincarnated form.

Khosatral Khel, the ancient from the Abyss, the god of Dagonia, is an outsider encased in a body of iron. He is described by Howard as being clad in sandles, a skirt, and a broad shagreen girdle. His square-cut mane is confined by a circlet of gold. He has monstrous shoulders, a massive chest, bands, ridges, and clusters of muscle on his torso and limbs. His face is without weakness and without mercy. They eyes are balls of dark fire. He is a giant of iron, heavy and strong.

Pelias:
The Return of Conan by L Sprague de Camp & Bjorn Nyberg
is a sequel to the only Conan novel Howard wrote, which saw Conan rise to become King of Aquilonia. As the story opens Conan and his queen, Zenobia, are hosting a palace ball, when Zenobia wanders onto a balcony and is snatched away over the rooftops by a kind of oversized bat, sent by a hostile necromancer.
Leaving his kingdom in the custody of a couple of old mates, Conan jumps on a horse and rides in hot pursuit, stopping off for a word of advice with his old friend the wizard Pelias. Pelias tells him that his influence on the civilised world is now such that magic is losing its power, and Yah Chieng, a Khitan sorcerer, has had Zenobia kidnapped with the express intention of luring Conan across a continent and into his evil clutches.
Didn`t find too many mentions about this guy, but he seems to be one of the "good-guys"

Skelos:
Not much can be found of this sorcer...
The Sword of Skelos is a 1979 fantasy novel written by Andrew J. Offutt featuring Robert E. Howard's seminal sword and sorcery hero Conan the Barbarian, the third and final volume in a trilogy beginning with Conan and the Sorcerer and continuing with Conan the Mercenary (which was actually published after The Sword of Skelos, though relating events prior to it). It was first published in paperback by Bantam Books.
I also noticed that in some sites are mentioned the Scrolls of Skelos being somesort of Beastiary.

Well thanks for inadvertantly(sic) helping my point. There are almost 20 mages on that list, and pretty much all of them are incredibly powerful by the standards of your everyday hero. Also thats 20 mages in all of the countries from the lore, whereas there were hundreds of hero types from the three in the game alone. Not to mention that in game, statistically 1/4 of players will play a Mage. So assuming that a server will hold 2000-3000 people at a time that means that there will be 500-750 of them on at any given time. Instead of the maybe like 5, being generous as to how many there should be.
Also, I wouldn't say remove Priests, that would be silly. I'm completely fine with priests, and magic. Just not mages per say.
And when I said "magic doesn't work like, fireball, fireball, summon snakes",oI meant that the mages don't shoot dozens of fireballs and the like in each fight. Every spell was pretty heavy. Even Conan himself could get dropped in a fireball or get killed by a summoned anaconda.
Also, only about half of those guys were actually written about in the original Howard books. The rest were added in by the lesser authors over the years who struggled to do justice to Howard's Conan legacy and come up with original ideas. So they just made their stories about Conan versus some all powerful sorcerer.
It boils down to one simple fact: It's a game!
While mages might not fit well into the lore, they need to be there because a lot of people like to play them and the game would take a hit if they weren't there. Do you remember the crying on this forum back when LoTRO was being developed and they announced that they would only have Lore Masters, not Mages? There were a lot of people complaining and saying they would never play LoTRO because of it, and all LoTRO did was change the name from Mage to Lore Master...they were effectively still mages.
I dunno... I think a game without fantasy races and without caster would do pretty badly haha

Point I was trying to make and (wasn't looking for an argument just to talk!) was that mages are quite prevalent in the world of Hyboria, I just wanted to show that with a few examples to anyone reading.
I believe that there were 22 Original Conan (inclusion) stories by Howard with a further 4 begun but not finished out of those I believe more than half had some reference to mage or "magical arts" or spoke of "distant lands on the subject". I would go as far to say they all contained magic use or reference in some way.
I think something like another 79 stories (books) (If I remember right!) were wrote after by other authors (not including comics)
I'm pretty sure there were dozens of deities/Gods/Demi Gods, some with the written ability to heal as well. (Magical often!)
I don't think there were hundreds or thousands of other types of traditional hero wrote about either, granted more than your average Hyborian Mage or God, but more so that you think.
Oh and about the fire ball magic comment, "Tolkemec's Wand" from Red Nails was practically a "machine gun run on magic"
So take into consideration Funcoms stance is that there are dozens of Gods in the lands, some 7 individual types just in the 3 main areas of the game, (Aquilonia, Stygia, and Cimmeria) with 24 in all that I know of in 90% of the terrority bordering these countries in game. Now these Gods were often described as using some form of magic or unearthly acts. This is where your "priests" come in, "Set" and "Mitra" described as being equal in power but with one deemed good the other lesser so. Funcoms Bear Shaman and Druid are also variations with Gods, Bear Shaman = a Priest/melee hybrid with spells for nature, like from the "nature" god wrote about and "Druid" = Priest/Mage more of an incarnation of on book described mage. Then you have you Mages per se, each derived with having some abilities that were wrote about, along with F.C's take on them.
I don't know why you are so against the mage class when it and its effects are so abundant?

As you can see from some of these listed below; Funcom's idea for the mage class formed, eg Necomancer and Pets, Summoning, Transformations, Lich types, not to mention Dark Templar class having similar benefits as some of the magical items listed below.
The runes found in early Conan novels - Runes are gateways to the Rainbow energies that come from the gods and connect with our rainbow (sometimes called our Aura). They are powerful geometric forms, and can be used in yoga fashion by saying the rune while positioning ones body in it's form. Runes can be used as protection from other energies, as well as for divination; some place runes on bones and cast the bones as in the movie "Conan the Barbarian" when the Shaman ascertained what he must do to protect Conan from the gate keeper spirits. The gate at rainbows end we must all see someday.
The Soul of Thanza- A magical gem that becomes attached to the user's flesh. It gives the user vast powers, including the ability to live forever by "sucking" a victim's life-force like a vampire would suck blood. Grolin used the Soul to become the mighty Death Lord in Conan and the Death Lord of Thanza.
The Statue of Al'Kiir- Made from bronze, the statue is of a four-horned monster, grotesquely male and naked. It stands about 15 inches high and cannot be touched by women. Ill fortune supposedly falls upon any who possess it. The main features of the statue are four horns, three lidless eyes and a broad, lipless mouth with rows of needle-sharp teeth. It is used to bring forth the demon-god Al'Kiir, who looks exactly like the statue. The demon lord was brought to life in Conan the Triumphant by the sorceress Synelle.
The Eyes of Fire- A necklace owned by the Lady Jondra in Conan the Magnificent. The necklace was set with a flawless ruby the size of a large knuckle, surrounded by sapphires and black opals. It was stolen from the Lady Jondra by the Necromancer Basraken to control a demon of fire. After defeating the fire beast, Conan stole the single ruby with plans of selling it for a healthy profit.
The Emeralds of Larsha- Seven green gems (presumably emeralds) the size of hens eggs. In The Hall of the Dead, they were found by Conan in the ancient ruined city of Larsha in a black stone altar in which they were placed to form a star pattern. When the emeralds were removed from the altar, the mummified remains of their warrior guardians came to life. Conan escaped from the altar room followed by the guardians. However, when the guardians entered the outside world they, and the city of Larsha, crumbled into dust. Conan made his way to Shadizar with his booty of gems, but when he poured them onto a table in a local tavern to display his trophies, the emeralds too crumbled into dust.
Heart of Ahriman - This amulet appears as a large, crystalline gem, intricately faceted and glowing from within. The Heart is a powerstone; its other powers are not completely known, nor have they been since the Heart was brought to the west by the Khari. However, a few of its powers include Magic Resistance, the ability to bring the dead to life as mummies and give the mummy the illusory semblance of life. This life is a sham, however, and the holder of the Heart can withdraw it at any time.
The Grim Grey God - Found in the ancient city of Nithia. It is a statue of a god carved from a grey pearl the size of two heads. Long ago, the gods of justice trapped the powers of the gods of evil within the statue. It was protected by the priests of Nithia until the city fell to invaders. When the priests cast a spell which buried the city and the invaders beneath the sand, the statue was lost for three thousand years. Conan finds a map to the buried city, but he isn't the only one seeking the treasure.
The Elephant's Heart - A great jem, the source of the evil priest Yara's power in "The Tower of the Elephant." In order to destroy Yara, Conan had to cut out the heart of Yag-kosha, a man/elephant being of the Elder World, imprisoned by Yara, and soak the jewel in its blood. Through an amazing feat of sorcery, Yara is shrunken and pulled into the Heart, which then explodes. Thusly, Yag-kosha is avenged.
The Sword of the Kings of Valusia - In Conan the Valorous, Conan bought a cheap old sword with no handle (it rotted away) from a merchant so he could go on a quest to his homeland, Cimmeria. After inspecting several notched and rusty ones, he drew this blade from among them. The blade had turned purple-black and the bronze hilt and pommel had corroded to green. He tested it for balance and found it to be excellent. He then had it fitted with a handle made of thin wood and wrapped with the backskin of a giant rayfish. The sword turned out to be the sword of the Kings of Valusia, constructed over 4000 years ago from a fragment of one of the Arrows of Indra, a meteor. It was used by Conan to slay Jaganath, a sorcerer who, for a brief instant, was master of all sorcerers until the sword was plunged into his gut! Conan then gave it to his cousin as a gift for his firstborn son.
The Star of Khorala - From Conan the Wanderer (Shadows in Zamboula), the Star of Khorala is a golden ring with a large jewel. The ring holds magical power, when properly used it will enslave the hearts of any of the opposite sex. The Star of Khorala was stolen from the Queen of Ophir by Jungir khan, which was in turn stolen by Conan. From here on, there is no more record of the Star of Khorala.
Flame slayer - A sword of ancient design. It had a broad blade with a bronze hilt wrapped in leather. Had quillions in the shape of claws which used to hold the two great rubies known as the Eyes of Fire. The sword was forged 3000 years ago by great wizards as an instrument to be used against the beasts of fire (dragonlike creatures). In the Kezankian Mountains, Conan used this sword to slay a beast of fire. The sword was the only weapon which could penetrate the beast's thick skin.
The Source of Light (an amulet) - A large, powerful crystal. When properly used, it would give the owner power over life and death. When a zombie touches the amulet, its soul would be set free. The amulet was found by a Turanian nomad in a ruin in the desert of Turan. The wizard Neg had the amulet stolen and brought to his castle in Brythunia. Conan stole the amulet from Neg and gave it to the zombie, Tuanne, who used it to set her soul free. The amulet still lies with the bones of Tuanne in a Brythunian forest.
The Cobra Crown - The cobra crown is a hollow cone of gold encrusted with thousands of small cut diamonds. It is fashioned in the likeness of a serpent whose coils form the conical headpiece and whose arched neck rises up from behind to curve across the top of the crown so that the serpent's blunt head stares out from above the brows of the wearer. The crown magnifies the mental abilities of the wearer so that an untrained mind can control another completely while a trained mind could literally control an army to the point of sacrificing themselves pointlessly. It was created by the serpent men of Valusia and is one of the most potent sorcerer's sigils the Hyborean Age has ever seen. It was found on the Nameless Isle underneath the altar of Tsathoggua the Toad God in Conan the Buccaneer.
The Book of Skelos
A great and mystical tome of the Hyborian Age. The great Cataclysm is chronicled along with ancient sorcerers knowledge, prophecies, and tales of unseen planes of existence. It is said that the book was written by a Valusian seer named Vathelos, describing the Black Seers of Yimsha, rituals of the Heart of Ahriman, even the powers of the Hand of Nergal.
The Black Ring
A massive cooper ring in the shape of a serpent, it is said that it can control demons from the black gulfs of beyond. Very little is known of this ring belonging to Toth-Amon.
Axe of Varanghi
The ancient weapon of the Taians of Stygia was given to their first warrior hero, Varanghi from Mitra. Any warrior that wields the axe is said to be undefeatable as long as the warrior remains true in the eyes of Mitra. The Axe is also a symbol of Taian unity, and dates back to their first arrival somewhere south of the Styx, at the head of the Hyborian migration.
Beads of Zath
Jet black beads worn in dancing costumes of the temples virgins of the spider god Zath in Yezud. The temple virgins are tested before Zath each time they wear the dance costumes, a loss of virginity denotes treason to the spider god!
The Burning Skull
An ancient skull said to be the last remains of an ancient and evil wizard that hypnotizes any who look at it's face.
Conan also used a Demon Slaying sword and a magic girdle! in the "Phoenix on the Sword" and the "People of the Black Circle"
So just a few things there..... Maybe some will appear in game? Maybe some won't
There are plenty more mages than just those listed in my other post too. But if we used your term of statistics then out of the original Robert E Howard books and taking into account how often a mage or something supernatural is refered too then are 3/4 of the people playing on 3k server pop are duly within their right to play a mage? Sounds like it too me. Another argument for the Mage class would be that it helps to balance all the classes overall.
I don't see giving people the option to play either a priest or a mage is a bad thing.
Its because of a rich and diversified Lore and history associated with AoC that the developers can be allowed to let their mind run free with ideas, I don't see many big issues with the game not being pefect with the lore. It's the strides it makes to how it plays in the world that counts. Yes the latest poll shows nearly 1/4 of people will play mage, but thats out of only 4k people so far, not the thousands the game hopes to attract. Besides, I love how each class reads, and the mage class sounds just dam cool in my book. Weapon enchantments are magical too and lots of those in the lore and the game :P
Personally, I will be making a Druid first Priest / Mage hybrid. Or I might be a Lich like Thurgra Khotan (Natohk) in Black Colossus who was essentially one.
Well I find it exciting that Artifacts or Talismans like the ones I listed above wrote all those years ago could find their way into the game!

You should check out some articles on spellweaving. The AoC dev team has specifically said this wont be a game where magic is for the cheery fireball slinging pointy hat weilding wizard. Magic is damn dangerous (hence the whole soup corruption system), and you get to weave spells together that could go far beyond your capabilities, corrupting your soul.
And yes they actually implemented that.

You have to realize that for an MMO to work that's based off something you might have to bend the rules a little to make the game enjoyable to the most amount of people. I mean look at WaR, female priests of sigmar? You gotta be fair to everyone, so if they didn't use mages or casters of any sort, they would lose a huge amount of people who like plaything those types of classes.

Avery, I am following WAR, and will not play AoC but I am on your side. For one, I have read the Conan Lore and completely agree, there was enough magic to grant casters as playable characters. Two, if this was a real concern for them, they would post this question on the official forums, where I can easily see this topic has been brought up multiple times.

I'm not trying to argue either (it's kind of hard to get tonal inflections across through text), and I know that magic is a must for any Conan game. My point remains the same though. Mages are, as a group, far too powerful in the lore for it to be the same class as a Warrior or Rogue. I mean, considering that your average Mage in the Hyborian universe is powerful enough to have an entire city living in fear. I mean, I doubt that you're supposed to level your character up to the point where he's as strong as Conan himself. And even Conan had trouble with most mages. The point is magic in Conan lore is too powerful to have a class which entirely revolves around it. I mean I'm all for priests who have the odd damage/healing spell. But shouldn't a Conan game consist mainly of Warriors, Rangers, Rogues, and Priests? I'm just saying that Mages should be reserved for large encounter boss's.Also, to reply to a previous reply. I think that a game would be fine if instead of "mages" you had priests, and most characters were physical combatants or some form of rogue.
P.S. Listen to him Ormstunga, eating your balls is really not worth it!
On a slightly more serious note; I think we're dealing with a difference in lesser and greater magic. The ability to toss a fireball or two can be widespread, but the ability to live for millenia and get naked wenches to kill themselves with just a few words is more restrictive (sorry, only seen the movies ).

Im reading the stories this is based off and well id say there are sorecers in forms of a summoner and i want to say a necromancer aswell. New adventurers who want to study magic well will become mages. Mages,sorcerer,wizard they're really all the same thing just differant words.
