I didn't read the release notes before logging in after the Module 5 update but I immediately noticed an improvement in performance! All new LOTRO-quality water effects too! Some of LOTRO's options such as texture caching and crowd quality are now in DDO. I figured they brought DDO's build up to the same version as LOTRO *but* I also noticed zero hitching. I even ran to the auction houses and mailboxes, which are typically the most crowded areas where hitching was the worst. Nothing. Nada. Smooth as silk. Now if they'd just get that improvement put into the LOTRO engine...
I guess the last major issue with the engine I have is (I'm assuming) over-dependence on netcode for other player's movements. Turbine's engine is the only MMO engine I've played that I recall this level of "hitching" in terms of watching other characters move and jump.
Subscribers can read the release notes here. The engine updates are near the bottom.

The water looks better but now it feels like I'm wading through a big pool of jello

Haha speaking of that, did you see the screenshot Quarion posted of the slimes filling one of the dungeons they had to close yesterday?
The "slow down in water" thing always bugged me in DDO. Yeah, it's more realistic but it's just a game. Everyone bunnyhops to pick up the pace, which is not realistic at all. Cause and Effect. hehe
i always always hated the bunny hop
I'm glad for the water-slowdown tho - ranging enemies from the top of sewer "runs" who charge into our melee-ers
( so they;not we; get the -4) was a standard tactic of my old guild.
But hey i think re-posting the screenshot here would be worthwhile!
