This is a common view from people who are fine with grouping. I think that may include many developers, which may explain why they are so clueless about solo playing, pretty much putting it exclusively in the beginning of the game sort of as an introduction path to the "real" part of the game, dungeon crawls and raids.
What they don't understand is that it's not the grouping that makes MMORPGs come alive, it's the players that people the world. You don't have to group with them in order to prefer to have them there, for the alive feeling of the game as opposed to the static feel of FPS games that are just you and your computer.
Just as in the real world you don't have to be a joiner, have to be part of this or that orginization, to be part of the world. Or to appreciate that the people, most of whom you don't know and don't want to know, are an essential part of your world.
So it is with virtual worlds, at least for some of us. Perhaps more of us than developers realize.

your response saved me from all that typing - though yours was much more kindly phrased than mine normally is - get tired of trying to explain this to people that think there is only one way to play MMORPGs
And if so which MMORPG are you going to join? What about LOTRO is making you leave? Do you plan on trying the game again?
I am curious as I see all the "I am quitting LOTRO" posts on the official forums and I wonder where everyone ends up. I am not happy with the current situation with the gold spammers and the slow response but overall I am not leaving.
Not Joining any new MMO's at the moment, in 3 different Beta's so have plenty to do.
I just got bored, I think I'm done with the whole class based Fantasy Theme.
Probably not as I can't see it changing enough to bring me back in.
Am I leaving? For now probably yes. My account is still active but I havent logged on in almost 3 weeks now, and other than my wonderfull kinmates I havent missed it.
What made me leave? Lack of content. Before anyone says (dont play new games then) thats not the issue. For casual players, which the game is made for, there is a ton of great content. I am in no way displeased with the gameplay/content they have. I just have alot of time to play games (I can play at work). So 2 months after I started I have done at least 90% of what is offered right now and the other 10% I have no interest in.
New MMO? Non atm. I am enjoying beta testing and playing some F2P games. They dont offer as much as P2P but when your bored with the current games, these can be somewhat fun to pass the time. Eventually I will go back to LOTRO, play all the new content then move on and wait another 6 months or so. The game is great in its own right it just wont keep a 60+hour a week gamer happy. Most games wont. Odds are when WAR comes out I will play that though.
Yes, I've left. I haven't logged into the game in weeks, nearly a month now. I've got a free account until January, so I'll leave it active so I can meet up with friends/guildies if the mood strikes me.
I haven't found a new MMO, I'll probably take a break from them. I've been playing NWN2 with my husband for the time being.
The lack of specialization. Everything about my Hunter was the same about everyone else's Hunter; same skillset, same traits, same quest gear. All the armor looks alike and the chargen is severely lacking. I came from Pre-CUNGE SWG and DAoC, so I prefer having more choices in my builds. I've also been playing since beta, almost exactly 1 year. I'm just kinda done. I've leveled so many characters, I've done all the quests repeatedly. Bored now.
Probably not. Unless they throw out the class system, the leveling system, the crafting system, and start all over from scratch, it just isn't a challenging game for me. It's a good starter MMO to play when you're new to MMOs. I'd have loved this game in 2002. I've been spoiled by all of the other games that have done these features better.

I think that was my challenge...do i want to continue dealing with the performance issues I was experiencing for the gameplay? Was there enough to do, or was it satisfying, that I could work through my tech support issues on my own...
It was not there...it did not feel like WoW or GW...then I went to EQ2 and saw how things were, and thought "This is what crafting, combat, visuals, and performance tweaking should be like..."
I still even go back to GW (after 3 years) and even went back to WoW for a short while...but, I guess I got lucky with how well EQ2 played and ran...I will stick with it..
As to NWN2...what an awesome choice also...I loved that game, and it looks very nice also (gotta look into changing those character models with some mods...was it me, or do the females look sort of mannish?)
Cheers!
(PS: I used your skin also in LOTRO, I liked it...thank you for your work)

I agree. There are a lot of games out there that have done crafting/combat/chargen/advancement better. Most of those games have at least one feature that is fantastic, though other aspects may be lacking. Like SWG, the crafting, skill-based advancement, and player market were incredible. But it lacked in content. Repeating the same kill missions over and over was dull. DAoC had great RvR and I also liked their char advancement system. But the emphasis on PvP made the PvE side a little flat.
LotRO does everything just okay. It's like they had a checklist of features that they wanted to get into the game so that they could mention it on their packaging and advertisements. "Want PvP? We've got it! Want mounts? We've got those, too! Like to craft? When you can totally craft stuff in LotRO!!1!" But none of the systems were as good as or better than the same systems in other games. The priority was just cramming them in, not doing anything especially well.
I'm really not trying to bash. I've had a lot of fun in the game, it just couldn't hold my attention for a full year.
NWN2 is pretty good so far. It's a little linear, but a lot of RPGs are (which is why I had been mostly playing MMOs for the last few years.) I loved KotOR, so it was easy to pick up NWN2. I'm excited to play a real primary healer again.
The women do look pretty mannish, though, lol. My husband swears my char looks bad ass, but I think it's only cause she looks like a dude. I hadn't thought about searching for mods or skins. That might be my project for the rest of the afternoon.
And thanks for the compliment! I was boggled that anyone outside of my guild liked it enough to use. I assumed my kinsmen were telling me it looked good just because I am a guild leader and no one wanted to cross me.
I will be playing this game for quite a while. I got the lifetime pass early on because the game was launched in a way that they can focus on the future and not having to devote so much time just to get it playable ie Vanguard. For my style of play this game is perfect because I can go at my own pace and still be able to do all sorts of things with my guild. Now I don't think the game is perfect but what other game is? I have pretty much done most of the stuff in game and have enjoyed the ride, and thats all you can ask from a developer. I don't think its possible to make a mmo and keep people entertained for a whole year if you are a hardcore player. The really big bonus that I like about LoTRO is that is has the brightest future of all the current mmorpgs out now. The pace at which Turbine is updating the game and adding features is pretty incredible imo. The fact that they are adding housing so quick is pretty nice. I also like that Turbine has not made it a one defacto system game. Regardless of your playstyle you can can acquire very good items without having to resort to something that you don't care for. Raid, crafting, soloing, pvp all can get very good gear.
To my point from before, if you look at every single mmo that was released and 6 months later, there was always people whining about no end game and the lack of things to do. A year down the road, this game should have alot of new features and content and that will make it worth people resubbing and enjoying the new stuff. To me the test of a really good MMO is how it will develop years down the road and thats why I feel good about LoTRO. We all know how the story ends but we all get to be apart of Middle Earth and that is what the game is really about.
I like lord lotro but was not as good as i thought. alot of the quest bored me but ok game i guess but i am going back to a game i know is great Dark Age Of Camelot.
I only hung around for 3-4 months because I made some good friends, had fun chatting etc.
Then I entered "/played" and calculated total hours played.
Then I thought about how much more real money I could have had if I had worked or increased the client list with at least half of those hours....
After ac2, wow, eq2, and lotro, I think I'm done with MMOs forever. Chess is more challenging, and averages about 15 minutes per game, and you get to chat. Unreal Tournament with friends requires more skill and you can get on and off at will... no 4+ hour time block commitments to mindlessly press buttons going thru some group encounter that everyone has already done countless times already. I'm disgusted with myself that I've ever played these creepy games at all. I feel sick. Gonna crawl off and die somewhere... l8tr
Left Lotro at lvl 50. Was in beta since nov 2006 and thought we'll have Moria or something like that for Christmas 2007.
Couldn't play more time this farming game. No real pvp, we can't play orcs (now we now WHY) , this game became boring for me at lvl 30 but tried to see high lvl content...there's no High lvl content, only farming and farming again. Angmar is awful. no challenge...
I'm an old fan of Tolkien, can say now i'm really disappointed. My "friends" left the game before me, even " 1rst fanboys". Actual players are Lifetime subscribers, "super" fanboys, trial players, other players leaving lotro when 50 is reached sometimes before... When i stopped few days ago my friendlist was full of friends, disconnected since... August. (some of them since june or july...)
When i stopped 1 week ago, could find people only in Angmar, Rivedell or Bree. Most of players are in Angmar... and lvl 40 to 50...Shire is empty, lonelands are empty, etc etc etc ...
I'm not saying Lotro is dead but imo players are waiting now for something interesting: Moria, Minas Tirith playing Evil side etc.
NB: i'm only a casual player and not a HCG.
-------------
And if so which MMORPG are you going to join?
1° thought could stay 2 years on lotro and don't have another mmo ftm,
maybe coming back to vanguard or EQ2 or DAOC, looking for a nice mmo actually/
What about LOTRO is making you leave?
2° disappointed, tried to play 1 more month but really couldn't. Even craft is boring in this game. few classes, areas are small, quests = bashing and farming, i hate angmar etc etc etc. Don''t want to waste my time and my money killing 340 angmarims then 340 drakes etc, this is a nonsense... Wanted to stay online because it's the only MMORPG LOTR we have but couldn't, because of the poor gameplay, because of the repetitive quests. So I decided to cancel.
Do you plan on trying the game again?
3° not sure: waiting now for something really interesting. Waiting for Moria. or something like that... or AOC/War.
I canceled my account around a month ago and will never go back, not that its bad just really not much for ( me ) in the end game area. I did enjoy the ride to lvl 45 or so but slowly got tired of what the game was about by max lvl.
I cancelled last week but I havent logged in over a month. What finally did it for me was a bug with the LOTRO and the X-Fi sound cards. Turbine decided to use some files from Creative Labs without testing it which leads to constant BSOD on an otherwise completely stable system. Gameplay issues I could excuse but I will not pay for a game I can not play.
Currently I'm playing EQ2, swore I would never play another SOE game after SWG and VG but I was surprised at how fun the game is, though they had 3 years to work on it so far. For awhile I thought about going back to Final Fantasy 11, which I played for a few years, or even WoW but decided to try something new (new to me at least). There's plenty to do in EQ2 and at times its overwhelming but to me that's a good thing.
Anyhow my final thoughts is that LOTRO does not offer anything significant. If you played EQ2, WoW or a clone of either you wont find anything significant in LOTRO, actually what you will find is there is A LOT less things to do since its still relatively new.
The bashing of Lotro here is unfair to some extent. I also left Lotro, even though I have good memories of it.
Lotro is very polished, the interface and the graphics excellent. The music is great for each zone, until you get bored with repeatingly playing it, so turn them off from options.
No you do not go killing trolls endlessly. The epic story is great and bk6-8 is sheer awesome. No you cannot solo it. You can hardly solo the major steps of the epic story unless you are way outlvling it. Bk9 is almost all solo a major stepback, bk10 ... sigh.
The game really gets into trouble after lvl cap, 50. What do I do at lvl 50? Make another alt or max your craft? What about 5x50s and maxing all crafts? The raid content (really only helegrod, is so easy you can clear them in 2.5 hours, even after the upgrade, you can clear all except thorog in 2.5hours) So what can you do?
What I am doing now? Not loggin back on.
The game is great for solo casual players, very nice indeed, but once you hit 50, things come to a stand still. The world is too small, you can walk from shire to misty mountain in an hour. There is just so much eyecandies and so many grids to explore, after which ... what do I do? I have my share of good moments now turned into memories. I am ready to move on.
I was bored with EQ2 and tried LOTRO. I played eq2 since 2 and a half year, so i though, there are new and possibly more sophisticated MMOs out there. After 40-45 days of gaming i escaped back to EQ2. I felt as the fresh air flew in my dry lungs and i can breath again. There is no MMO at the moment except EQ2 for me. Everything is just poor in compare with it.
I played Gods and Heroes beta some days ago. It has some potential, but that was only a beta, and i learned from LOTRO: never judge by the first glance.
Almost everyone here is comparing a very YOUNG game (One that is growing by an entire land or two ever 2 months), to games that already have years, or multiple expansions to them.
Almost everyone here is comparing a very YOUNG game (One that is growing by an entire land or two ever 2 months), to games that already have years, or multiple expansions to them.
Right. Sit there and wait for LOTRO growing up!
Greets to you...new to EQ2 myself...and I was shocked...after clocking 200 hrs in 1.2 months...I have clocked more hours than 3+ months of LOTRO....
The fact I want to continue going back is the key...as LOTRO did not do it...someone said great UI...it is ugly...especially on a 1920x1200 monitor...you cant read anything due to bad scaling options..or areas which do not scale..
Then performance wise...no trick in the book fixed my issue...and as another post stated...issues with X-Fi, 8800's (some models) and the USB Logitech G7 issue I experienced that a dev said to remove...well...
And lets not even mention the tech support...
Well...I think I am good where I am at until something better comes along...and it now looks like 2007 was a bad year for MMO's.
You and a ton of other people seem to forget the MMO part in MMORPG. Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is a genre of onling role-playing game (RPGs) in which a large number of players interact with one another in a virtual world.
I still can't understand why people want to solo in this type of game... there's also another type of game... they are called "First Person Shooters"... those might be more your speed. Leave the grouping for the adults.
This is a common view from people who are fine with grouping. I think that may include many developers, which may explain why they are so clueless about solo playing, pretty much putting it exclusively in the beginning of the game sort of as an introduction path to the "real" part of the game, dungeon crawls and raids.

no matter what one does in real life it has an effect on someone else even if you are not aware of it. To think that you effect no one in life is either selfish or ignorant, and then ignorance is bliss right?
Haven't left yet, but I don't feel much urge to play anymore. It runs fine for me and the game seems pretty well-polished and functional, but here are my beefs: 1. Combat is slow and gets tedious. Mobs have a lot of health and I always feel like I am waiting for things (timers, random procs) to use my more interesting skills. The sort of tiered system of combat skills (use this to open those skills, which open more skills) also seems tedious because I end up having to use a couple of skills I DON'T want to use in order to enable the one I DO want. 2. The quests get tedious. Most quests are really errands, not quests. 3. Character improvement gets tedious. Kill another 250 Wargs to get one more point of a Trait that will improve my character less than 1%? Yeah...I'm really pumped for that [/sarcasm] 4. Limited replayability. Starter zones are fine, but then everyone goes through the same progression (Bree->Lone Lands->North Downs->etc) 5. Too many group quests in lines of soloable quests, and so you end up frustrated with a lot of dead-ends filling up your quest log 6. Limited power gains as you level, effectively keeping group quests closed off from players who solo. Since you gain so little power from level to level, even if you WANT to do those group quests later on you may not be able to simply because you can't get strong enough. Seriously--get to level 40 and go try soloing the Great Barrows. Perhaps it's doable at level 50, but what about the group quests after that? 7. Too many limits on self-healing. Got an unexpected add? It probably means run or die. Shorter cool-downs on self-heals or else expensive ways to self heal (like potions are, except make them useable more frequently) would make the game more fun and (here is that word again) less tedious.
LOTRO feels like WoW with more emphasis on realism, less emphasis on raiding, and less fun to play overall. Some of the most fun I had in WoW was going back to solo instances. The rewards were not worth it of course, but it was FUN. I miss my WoW Paladin--the Captain does not compare at all for sheer fun factor. Anyway, I'm not going back to WoW. I'm now playing more single player games. Currently: Oblivion, Medieval II Total War, Sam 'n Max Season 1. Next MMORPG will probably be PotBS, though I may reactivate CoH/CoV for a month or two.
You summed it up nicely for me.
Especially the feel of having to wait for things. I experienced that the most with crafting. All those progress bars during crafting make crafting have loads of idle time. It gets even worse at later tiers where everything takes even longer. Who's brilliant idea was that I wonder?
I liked grouping in LOTRO though, but was sometimes difficult to find a pug that needed to do the same stage in a questchain. I wasnt surprised with the classic narrowminded setup of the classes, I played LOTRO mainly because it is LOTR.

I just beta'd Tabala Rasa and Gods & Heroes<shrug> - I definitely won't leave LOTRO for either of those.
Yes, my wife and I will try LOTRO again some night this week...and next week...and the next...

We all know how the story ends but we all get to be apart of Middle Earth and that is what the game is really about.
i will not quit it. i am lv 48 an i cant wait to get to lv 50 and then get on raid quests. also annuminas is here, and also book 11 is out soon.
also Epic quests are the best i played ever in any mmo.
Lotro - Dwarf Champion
WOW - Undead Warrior
NB: i'm only a casual player and not a HCG.

I left because:
1) Most quests are a boring time sink, treats are a joke
2) There are hardly solid groups and the solo content is poor
3) All you get is killng trolls forever in the end
4) Even more grindind than WoW
Alternatives I ruled out:
EQ2: got bored in 3 days
DAoC: almost dead
WoW: only for hardcore raiders, left after tier 4
Guild Wars: don't like PvP
So I basically can't find any MMO for me
I cancelled last week but I havent logged in over a month.

Right. Sit there and wait for LOTRO growing up!

Greets to you...new to EQ2 myself...and I was shocked...after clocking 200 hrs in 1.2 months...I have clocked more hours than 3+ months of LOTRO....The fact I want to continue going back is the key...as LOTRO did not do it...someone said great UI...it is ugly...especially on a 1920x1200 monitor...you cant read anything due to bad scaling options..or areas which do not scale..
Bummer!
Welcome to Norrath. EQ2 is waiting for the new expansion coming in November, so you have a lot of work to do

Anyone thats leaving, thats a real shame. I love the game.
I'd like to speak with someone leaving so if your done for good, send me a PM
I'm not leaving , still enjoying the game and in a good kinship. The bugs /stutters are being fixed and housing is coming
Perhaps more of us than developers realize.
your response saved me from all that typing - though yours was much more kindly phrased than mine normally is - get tired of trying to explain this to people that think there is only one way to play MMORPGs
no matter what one does in real life it has an effect on someone else even if you are not aware of it. To think that you effect no one in life is either selfish or ignorant, and then ignorance is bliss right?
playing eq2 and two worlds
You summed it up nicely for me.
Especially the feel of having to wait for things. I experienced that the most with crafting. All those progress bars during crafting make crafting have loads of idle time. It gets even worse at later tiers where everything takes even longer. Who's brilliant idea was that I wonder?
I liked grouping in LOTRO though, but was sometimes difficult to find a pug that needed to do the same stage in a questchain. I wasnt surprised with the classic narrowminded setup of the classes, I played LOTRO mainly because it is LOTR.
