Even though it's not a traditional MMO, GW has the most fully featured, edge of your seat, strategically involved combat system that teeters on more than uber equipment and individualism. Teamwork, something that has largely been sidelined in recent titles is held in high regard. Not only that, but there's even a level of twitch that is unprecedented thus far in this genre.
It is the only game that requires true player skill in order to be competitive.
All other titles require one thing to progress, real life time investment.
Should the outcome of combat be decided based on the time you put into your avatar, or the skill of the player behind the keyboard?
The answer seems quite obvious to me, but apparently the masses are in disagreement.
I will no longer play games that hold player skill below that of avatar skill. Unless you truly enjoy mindless activities I suggest you agree with me. If not, have fun being a uniform sheep in the herd of zombies that is MMO gaming.

Their combat system works like every other combat system in a mmo game, click on target, spam same combo of attacks over and over again on each mob or player you come across, only difference is you have 8 skills to pick from.
The game isn't skill (player skill) based at all, its based on favour of the month builds just like wows favour of the month classes etc and twitch based yeah right, its the same lock on and shoot which you can do with the tab button theres nothing twitch about it. The classes are not balanced at all which is purpously done like that so you buy the next expansion/stand alone game w/e.
Other than your example of guild wars i agree that combat systems that rely heavily on player skill are much better, but imo guild wars does not full under that catorgory, it used to before they started releasing their expansions but it doesn't anymore, hell even wow used to be semi skill based before they started adding uber gear aka raids.
Hmm lets see... Entirely consentual 12 vs 12 PvP with no death penalty, looting, or loss of any form. Sounds like an utterly worthless PvP system to me.
It is only new games like The Chronicles of Spellborn that will introduce true skill based combat with strategical elements.
Even WoW has better PvP then Guild Wars.
Psssh... its balanced PVP, Guild vs. Guild rocks, smooth gameplay, counter to every class, takes immense strategy and leadership as long as specific builds, I haven't played PVP MMOG that beats it. You just have to get into TEAM arenas, GVG, and HOH to get the full effect.
Oh by the way, I've played WoW on PVP, L2, DOAC, CoH (pathetic PVP), and many others all to PVP in. Guild Wars is still my favorite to get in there and pwn people. Because a good PVP fight is only a few clicks away .
By the way anybody that says WoW AB rocks.. its all gear based, &^#$ that.. anybody with a job and goes to school knows that you can't compete with the majority of addicts.

The only thing GW offers you is a fast way to play the fotm. nothing more.
lol
Don't think anything else needs to be said.
FoTM?? lol.. you talk to anyone that plays GW on a regular basis and they'll tell you that guilds avoid FoTM builds for obvious reasons.. there's hundreds of great balanced builds that are great to run.. i disagree with the lock on a target spam your skills idea as well..
you can equip attack skills, interupts, buffs and evade skills all on the same bar,... having the skills to target swap and play smart, maximizing your bars potential while maximizing strategy is amazing on GW ...GVG is a phenomenal PVP aspect that I am not sure is matched by any game.. the tournaments are well organized and highly competitive.. isn't WoW a world series of video games MMO? ROFL to that IMO.. it's 4v4.. how lame is that.. WSVG.. woot, up there with games like Guitar Hero, FIght Night, Quake..?? Free to play MMO with great PVE and PVP.. there's really nothing to bash here.. MMO PVP fans are foolish not to be huge fans of GW.
Even though I am a late bloomer to this game. This game does have immense PvE material as well. You wouldnt think with a name like Guild Wars. You think, ok, level 20, no sweat. Ahem... Unless you are a GW expert or a PL player, then it probably is a breeze. (Using the Prophecies campaign only). I played factions, and yes, to me, the leveling in that game is much quicker.
Yeah, you can create a LvL 20 PvP character right off the spot, but I assure you, he will be gimped and you cannot RP this toon in the level world (is my understanding).
I like the fact that you can be in the Prophecies Campaign and visit the Faction Campaign, I dont know if this is possible as well to get into Nightfall. But it seems like everything is just 1 town or boat away.
Yeah it doesnt have open world pvp, but the game definetly makes up for it in its PvP arenas.
PvP however you define it, it is still Player vs Player and the pvp fights can be wickedly fun.
It is always funny to see the mods dump a thread in here from the dreaded Pub.
It is also funny to see that even after 2+ years on the market people don't understand the depth of GW PvP. GW is balanced beyond compare, when there is no uber build, that is the best.
"It is easier to be cruel than wise. The road to wisdom is long and difficult... so most people just turn out to be assholes" Feng (Christopher Walken)
It's a good PvP game, personally I think it's the best. But it's different from person to person what they prefer.
I'm surprised people actually compare the gameplay on GW to WoW. Guild Wars is not focused on mindless grinding but how effectively you use your chosen skills in various scenarios. One particular build may be great against an opposing alliance comprised mostly of warriors but not be worth crap against a team of elementalists. So, those who claim GW is centered around whatever build is popular that week need to think again.

Obviously, OBVIOUSLY, you haven't played a single round of Guild Wars PvP.

Obviously he likes to to lose what he's been working his ass off for 2 years just because he got a lag spike. Lovely.

LOL. The lag/disconnect death has happened to me on numerous games and I can't tell how you aggravating it is to lose your equipment, money, stats, etc because of something beyond your control. I really like the way GW is set up.

I know no one's going to read this, but I just had to vent. Btw, GW still has the best PvP in MMO and I have this feeling that it will be for a while still, even if ANet tries to hard to ruin it.
Having to say the exact same thing over and over to an uneducated and narrow-minded crowd to prevent their ignorance from spreading does get tiresome though.

I can honestly say that Guild Wars has the best PvP setup I have ever encountered within an MMO
I play both WoW and GW. I like WoW far better and so the only reason i play GW is for its superior pvp system.
There is no type of penatly at all in the 12v12 fights; you have to keep beating them and each time you are evenly matched (there is no "superior" weaponry like thunderfury, the best items are extremely easy to get..) so the only way to win the fight is to actually be better as player. A lucky crit can still decide a fight.. but then when you meet again he transports you back to the resurrection area unless you were better anyway and kill them again and again.
As opposed to the "large scale" wow pvp, where 8 out of 10 people are jumping somewhere afk waiting for somebody to score a kill so they gain points. Dont get me wrong, it also happens in GW but the other way arround: on 12 players there is usually no leechers, but on bad days you can have as many as 2.
The only reason i can think of not to play GW is... none. Its F2P except for the first purchase, but so is every normal pve game except this is online.
