So far I like it.... Just enough 'twitch' to keep it interesting but not too much for a casual game. The voice-overs are very well done and add an extra sense of immersion to the game. Still getting used to the interface but so far not bad at all. Character creation was a snap and I find it nice that even though you can only be human you don't look like a clone of every other human. While the customization isn't as great as other games (EVE, SWG, UO, even EQ/EQ2 etc) it is very much better than most in recent history (LOTRO, DDO, GuildWars, etc) The missions, at least the few starter ones I've done, actually feel like a mission rather than 'go kill 10 rats and bring me their tails' which is a nice twist. And so far it appears to be sticking to it's sci-fi roots.
As I said, this is a very early first impression but so far I like what it has to offer.
Yeah, my early impressions were similar to yours. Unfortunately once the novelty wore off I realised there wasnt a great deal else to the game.
OMG!!!!!! does every thing that they do similar have to be o they copied that game!!!!!! o look this game is online they copied WoW o look they have wolves in EQ2 omg they totally stole their idea!!!ooo....maybe they wanted to make quests like WoW cus thats what 8 million people luv...so what they copied it get over it....its not a shooter....its an MMORPG.....many bugs....yes there is....is it out yet, NO!do u have an opinion, YES!! sum stuff will be the same most of the ideas r gone...Richard wanted a new kind of painting...not the same old plado....that is all :]
Meh, there should never be a problem with opinions. They're just that, opinions.
What I personally have issue with, are those that feel grabbing others by the hair and shoving their fifty-plus-posts-a-day down the throat of any reader as though they have no choice on whether to try the game. These people feel they are performing a community service by trolling every thread out there and posting flamatory, or outlandish comments in an attempt to force their beliefs on the public. People like that should be shot. It's America; everyone has the right to choose and form their own opinion, and not forced into your decision.

Yes, my point exactly
Played it a little more tonight and had quite a bit of fun. I'm still not getting where people are comparing it to WoW though. Other than you are killing things in an online game there isn't much similarity between the two games at all. Oh... and you get 'quests'/'missions' in both as well (then again you get those in every MMORPG).

People compare everything to WoW here, reason be damned. I do think the game has a chance of being a decent lightweight action game once it's finished in oh... 6-9 months.
MMOs Played: EQ 1&2, DAoC, SWG, Planetside, WoW, GW, CoX, DDO, EVE, Vanguard, TR Playing: WAR Awaiting 40k Online and wishing for Battletech Online
I just recently started this game about a week ago and I'm going to agree with you Taram it is a lot of fun. The other day I took over the imperial Valley control point by myself, it took me roughly 15 tries but man did I have fun with it.
Here is my opinion, I am not going to argue with yours Taram so don't take it that way. I enjoy this game a lot but there is really nothing revolutionary in the game that it claimed to have, to a certain extent it is WOW/Vanguard with new skins and models. It doesn’t play exactly like WOW but sometimes I feel like I am playing it. This game is DIFFERENT. It's not another Elves and Dwarves game, it is finally a break from the fantasy games and into a new theme of MMORPGS which I really admire Richard for doing considering UO, and that's why I like it.
Don't compare the game to WoW, compare it to City of Heroes. Specifically, play an Assault Rifle blaster, and it feels very similar. Quick paced, action oriented, space invasion battles, dropships, outposts to capture, large scale NPC battles. It is all in CoH.
TR does all this with guns, and you can do it with guns in CoH. You can also control the weather, shoot flames, control the enemies' minds, blind them, throw evil plants at them, encase them in granite, have your pet kill them, turn the enemy into YOUR pet, etc, etc, etc. TR is like CoH abridged.
TR can be fun for those who like fast-paced action games with guns. I saw nothing in TR that CoH doesn't do better.
OP: Pretty much the same first impressions I got. I really like the action in this game. I have been playing with a buddy for about a week, and we are having a blast.

Hey theres this game out, thats like CoH and WoW, with a sci-fi theme like PlanetSide, made by the creator of UO. It's called Tabula Rasa!
I think it's funny, everyone says "Hey, this game is just like WoW" or "Hey CoH has a blaster class that uses a gun, it's just like that.".. They're just trying to compare it to what they know. Just like how my old chevy drives like my new jaguar. You still go left when you turn the wheel to the left right? Jaguar must have stole that from my Chevy right? You guys are ridiculous.
CoH didn't start out with more depth by the way. All this PVP and special event stuff with all these new chapters. That didn't come right out of the box. The Epic Powersets, not a chance. CoH has a simple dynamic, and back then the combat was jump around and attack with whatever off balance powerset you had. CoH has been around for years and years, so after all this time to think that they'd stay the same would be a joke. They added PVP, oh like.. a year later almost with an expansion. Bases and Raids were a long time coming. And I was there in Beta and played the game to lvl 50 enough times for me to say it has sufficiently bored me.
I like combat where the outcome is determined specifically by the actions I take, not just which skills I hit in the correct order.
Regardless I like the OP, because frankly he doesn't care what I think, and that is fantastic. Personally I like the game alot, play it alot too. But what the best part about his post is, is that he was giving his first impression. He put it out there for other new players to see, so that maybe he could convince them to make up their own mind.

Very well put Weasel, I totally agree, also to those of you that say this game is a lag fest, I agree if you stay on Channel 1, try moving to a different channel with not so many people on it and the game runs very smoothly. Before I get hammered for that last comment I realize that you shouldn't have to move but it is still beta and they do need to work out those lag issues!

but it is still beta and they do need to work out those lag issues!
The beta closes in 10 days.
What are they going to fix in 10 days that they haven't been able to fix in all the months it has been in beta ?
Answer: not much.
Are you a programmer, designer or have some inside knowledge that everyone else outside of the company does not? Ive seen games drastically change in less time.
I dont think you give a company who are not new to the MMO industry enough credit. They may or may not have a trump card up thier sleeve, we wont know until launch day. Its safe to say I trust NO MMO's at launch any longer and wait for at least 30-60 days before trying them out. Thats just to avoid the pain that is server loads, floods of people in all the new areas, and lauch glitches that are a guarantee. Its dumb to judge a game based soley on its beta, judge it 30 days out, 60, a year from.
This game has many similarities and differences to mainstream MMOs. Mostly similarities. They all will. Any other type of game will fall into a "niche".
The key is to find your niche game and stick to it. For me it's the UO/Eve/Darkfall(hopefully) style of game. I like to feel I own a piece of the game...where players make the content and most (or even all) of the items..where you lose everything when you die, but you can loot someone's stuff they they die. But I understand many people hate all that and that's ok.
Most developers don't want a niche game, they want a game that appeals to most people. So until someone comes up with another magical formula, we're just going to see more EQ/WoW type games.
This is NOT an FPS. Don't mislead people. FPS doesn't have aim assist and auto targeting. If this were anything like planetside I'd be all over it. Fisher Price should buy the rights and sell it as a single player "FPS" for children.
Personally I love how it works I get the action and fun of an FPS without the pain of having to really work at aiming. Also the sticky targeting is optional. If you don't like it you can turn it off under options. Don't remember which option but there is a slider or something that adjusts stickiness.
Just to toss out my opinion, I'm liking the game. While there are similarities to other games I feel that TR is unique. I don't think any game really has a world that feels as alive as the world in TR. In CoH I'd agree there is some similarity but still it lacks the alive feel and it doesn't really feel scifi in that you have all these powers and stuff that really overshadow any real weapon usage. Also the UI isn't fps like and while we can argue about stickiness it does play like an fps with running, shooting, sniping, and dodging into cover.
Given that this is just the base starting point for TR I'm very encouraged. I'm also pretty interested in the crafting systems which looks like it could be a socket/upgrade collection game in addition to normal crafting. Right now the system is pretty broken but we can see that it will provide equipment upgrades through drops you get from mobs. That sounds like it will be fun, collecting upgrades, and tweaking equipment to the best effect.
Lacking an Auction House is not a big deal in my opinion. I really could care less about buying and selling to players I just sell stuff to the vendor and/or pass things on to my friends. I think an AH would kinda devalue equipment in the game esp since there is no such thing as no drop. Basically the AH would be flooded with all the best equipment and would ultimately be worthless making equipment pointless since for a tiny amount of money you could buy the best stuff you can use....
So what you're saying is COH is like Anarchy Online, which does it better than COH so nobody should bother playing COH they should just play AO since it's free? See where this type of circular logic leads?
I have not played AO, but I can say that TR and CoH can look almost identical. For example: "I was about to go get that outpost with my team, and suddenly we noticed the dropships! They came over and started dropping the enemy, and me and my team started to hunt for cover. We knew a large battle was going to break out, and we were not going to have time to get the outpost before the battle started. Then large numbers of players and NPC's started fighting the enemy, fire-fights were breaking out all over the place. We got our guns out and started hunting down small bands of enemies. It was fast and furious for a few minutes. Finally, we beat the enemy back and went to the outpost and started to take that ..."
What game is that? TR or CoH? The experience is the same, the feel is the same fast-paced action, the premise is the same, and even the NPC battles sound the same. It is almost the same game; play an Assault Rifle blaster in CoH, and go to a Rikti invasion zone.
Also, I seriously doubt that AO has the same setup as CoH. Can you fly? run 80mph? jump 50 story bldgs? Fire your weapon once per second? Use multitudes of fire/ice/elec/tornados/mind control/etc?
TR is like CoH, just abridged. It is not "truly groundbreaking" or "revolutionary" as Richard G. claims.
The game's interesting. Will I say unique? No, not really. The combat reminds me of a hybrid of Neocron and AO, which isn't surprising given the genre.I do like the fact paced nature, and the graphics are, of course, rather pretty. Crafting will be...meh..crafting. So fat it fails to impress me as being any different than every other game out there. But it is fun.
Ya know, who cares what game it's like. If you don't like the game then move on. Yeah we have too many that don't have anything else to do or say, for that matter, except compare new games to WoW.
TR is NOT WoW, it's nowhere near WoW..for cryin' loud where are the murlochs! Geesh, write a creative critque or just leave it alone for criminey's sake!
