I read somewhere that if WoW were the exact same game but didn't have the word "Warcraft" in the title or didn't have the developer "Blizzard" on the box, that it would have 300K subscriptions. Well I'd like to test that theory with a little poll here on these forums. So why did you purchase WoW?
Damn!!! Ok, I screwed up the poll, so if you don't see your answer, just choose the last one and state your reason. They need to fix this so you can update the poll...arg!!!
And it is NOT funny to choose the last one just because I'm an idiot and can't do a stupid poll right....well maybe it is a little.

because it was made by blizzard.
Some of my friends were playing. If WOW didnt have Warcraft or Blizzard on the box it would just be called LOTRO.
But then if LOTRO didn't have LOTR in the title what would it be? ......vanguard lol
Bought it purely because of reviews by players and media. Have never been a fan of the warcraft games truth be told, until now
It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.
My friends were playing it.
My friends were playing and battered me into trying it!
Aditional Option!!
Because Warhammer Online is not out?

It started out as a good game. A degenerating player base, and crappy additions took too much away from it though, for me. I won't knock the game. I enjoyed it while I played (Including the Beta) and tho it has its problems it remains a fair game. It is not what everyone makes it out to be though, and OMFG I wish people would stop claiming every game is copying it, as they are not. Anyway, yeah... it was once a playable game for me that has just gone down hill too much, between the additions and playerbase.

Because everyone was talking about it. (Not that they were saying it was good, because many were not.)
I held off for over a year, but finally I had to see what the fuss was about. I bought it because it was popular, and I quit for the same reason. Too many people playing means there are a lot of horrible people playing.
None of the above.
I purchased WoW because it was "different" at the time of release. There wasn't really anything else like it either. That is primarily why I started on release, and quit about 5-6 months ago. I now await Warhammer Online, and hope to continue in it for as long as I did with WoW.
I bought WoW the fall of 2005, because of the hype associated with it and because I needed a new game. At that time I had been playing DAoC since 2002 and Catacombs had killed world xp groups, which is what hooked me into MMORPGs. I was also playing SWG, and was in the middle of grinding xp to convert it to force xp for the village. I needed a break from the grind that the village was and decided to see what was so hated about WoW and why it was loved by so many others. I didn't last a week in that game before I quit. It was quest based like a single player RPG, but lacked the single player RPGs' interesting quests and depth. I had less tolerance for immature people at the time, so the community drove me nuts too. At the time in DAoC, it was more likely to run across someone helpful and friendly, than immature and verbally abusive.
Now I don't play any MMORPG...only Two Worlds. I'm more strict on how I spend my time and grinding for levels in a depthless game with more horrible people than I care to deal with is not my idea of fun. Plus I have to pay for it? Sorry, but I am a DAoC generation player and I expect the majority of the community to want to group and to be mature helpful and friendly people. These days, since WoW was released, you need a guild to find that community. Well, I won't except that. I've seen the golden days of MMORPGs and I refuse to give in to the bad crowd just to grind my free time away. I'll just play single player RPG's until I find a great MMORPG to play WITH a majority of a good community...both on and off general chat. After all, gaming is for fun and I don't need to game. So there is no need for me to tolerate the anti-social behavior of todays crop of MMORPG players.

Can I make a suggestion? Go thru your disks and find your old copy of the game and re install. Break down and put your credit card back on your account for 1 month. Fire up the game and give it 1 more try. Many of the immature and verbally abusives that were just there because of the hype have left the game. Most of the people left are there because either they enjoy the game or are waiting for something else to come along that's better. Joining a guild will certainly help, but I think you might be a bit surprised you'll find a lot of guildless people that are either just starting the game or playing new alts and would love to have someone help them. I would suggest you choose either the Dranei or the Blood Elves race to start as those areas are the most recently added and some of the better done areas as well in my opinion. Also you'll more likely find someone starting up an alt in those areas. I can't guarantee you'll like the game, but I think you'll see a difference in the community.

Pappy,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I have resubbed to that game several times since I quit that first time. The only time I actually enjoyed myself after resubbing was when Burning Crusade came out. I loved the Blood Elves lore and playing as a Blood Elf Paladin. However, I couldn't stomach the quests past lvl 41. They were just too tedious and boring. Like I said, I am an old DAoC player who was brought up on open world group xping. You know, finding a nice camp or dungeon with monsters and destroying them with a group for hours, while having great conversations.
As I said in my post, I used to not be tolerant. I am very tolerant now and have found plenty of great people in WoW and even RPing guilds with 80+ people in them who actually like to play the game. But a good guild and community cannot replace interesting gameplay, which WoW still doesn't have for me.

I bought WoW for my wife & I just this past month, because I was looking for a game we could play together that wasn't too hardcore (plus I got many great opinions of it from the great community here at MMORPG.com, thanks guys).
But I chose because it's more casual. I like being able to jump online & play for an hour a day & get a quest done. I started off on the free 10-day trial, bought the retail after only 5 days, still on our free month, never had to "grind" & we're both level 27. I know it'll get harder to level soon, but that's ok. There's tons of quests in this game that make it worth playing & not a huge Grindfest.
I bought it because I heard it was good. 9 million people, um, it's worth a try. Before this game I didn't care for Blizzard, now I'm a fan of their games.
Because My friend gave me a guest pass and at the end of 10 days I was addicted.

congratulations! You have another
chance.

Because it was there exactly at the moment I decided I wanted to try out a mmorpg for a change. Pure coincidence.
Because my friends were playing it, and because I liked the graphic style and I thought that there was a deeper fantasy setting behind the game

Thanks all for replying to my Poll. I think it's pretty clear from this admittedly small sampling that not as many people chose the game just because it had Blizzard on the box as some would have you believe. I'll admit that Blizzard being the developer made me interested in the game initially and I did sign up for the beta partly because of that reason, but once I started playing the game it's pretty obvious it's a quality product and that's why I bought the game. Besides, no matter how many people bought the game because it was developed by Blizzard, they certainly didn't keep playing because it was developed by Blizzard and WoW has a lot of very loyal fans. For many, WoW is their first Blizzard game and had never even heard of Blizzard prior to playing WoW....hmmm that could be another Poll itself
I purchased wow so "clever" people would write up cute little forum posts and polls for trolling purposes.
Enabling the mentally disabled.
Blizzard and I thank you.
I tried the game first in beta and enjoyed it.
About ayear after release whan I wanted to start a new MMO with a friend I bought it.
I try all the games so the Blizzard brand name wasn't a big decider for me. For my friend however who was a massive Diablo addict in it's day, and all round warcraft fan........... it was.
The Warcraft franchise was something he was very excited about. If WoW was crap, however he would have soon moved on to something else. Only like all the other Blizzard games it isn't.
Blizzard's name and the Warcraft brandname do sell this game. WoW has only made that brandname stronger. You don't need to worry about people who say WoW only has so many subscibers because of the brandname. They are idiots. Thay are just looking for a way to demean WoW's popularity and success.
That's it. That's their whole game.
I wanted an online game to play...and this is the only one that I have not tried yet.
Even though I got kinda tired of WoW/TBC and cancelled my subscription, I will always appreciate the way Blizzard made this game cross-platform.
