One thing I miss in MMOs that AO had...

HakkeshuHakkeshu Member Posts: 11

I loved how just about every item in AO had some kind of backstory to it, like that slice of chocolate cake or whatever it was that actually tasted like cardboard but it used nanobots to make you remind how good your favorite slice was. Or the green armor that was made for some radiation bombed planted to protect the soldiers, why cant more MMOs do this? I havent played AO in a very long time but it was still my favorite of all time.

Heh. Yeah, the lovingly detailed backstories of submachine guns were pretty awesome.

I suspect most developers view it as a waste of time. Most users are lazy and hate to read...heck, they won't even read through long quest text....they jump to the bottom w/o reading it to find out how many boar skins they need to return.

But I would enjoy having that sort of depth to a game...maybe one day some innovative developer will "re-discover" this technique.

And AO had the best intro ever! Other MMO intros are just boring.

When i first saw your post i thought u wouldve mentioend the whole random mission generator thing. Most MMOs out there today have the same quests/missions/tasks/ or what not no matter how mant toons u play. Myself, ive gotten used to this. I play WoW yet and being able ot memorize where i need to go and what i need to collect or whatever just saves on downtime. However, the one hting i liked alot on AO was the random mission generators. You could pretty much pick whatever u wanted to do. If memory serves me correctly i think most of the time i went with missions invovling killing someone ,ie bounty hunting missions.

Tho seeing the background stories on items is also interesting to read and see once where they came from, what their last purpose was, or why they were made for what they do.

SWG had a minor version of that, while CoH/CoV had pretty much the same as AO. It's a great way for an MMO to add content without needing tons of developers to do so. And while it can be overused (a la CoH/CoV) and become even the very definition of a grind, it doesn't have to be. Instead, if used as seasoning, it enhances the flavor of an MMO rather than dominates it.

Yeah, with them working on new graphics it's definately not going to happen.

ummmm unless AoC stand for something other then Age of Conan then I'm gonna say you should just stop posting.

AoC is nothing like AO. I'm only gonna point out one thing AO=sci fi AOC= fantasy. do i need to go any further?

If you have to explain what is obvious well.. in other words.. There will NEVER be a AO2. Funcom only can do so much.. improving AO getting more subs.. using that cash to fund AOC.. Getitng Coders to peck and scroll away and make a game. ie... AO2 = AOC DO u get it now?

    1. AoC isn't sci-fi first of all.

    2. There are no guns in AoC and if they put them in there FC is very stupid

Even if AoC is a success, I still believe they should've made an AO2, since the is a very big lack of sci-fi mmo's. All the issues they had since launch could've helped them in making it too. What I mean by that is the do's and don'ts, that they are still trying to correct at a very slow pace now since AoC was in the drawing boards.

OH, what a beautiful dream that could have been, the birth of AO2!!

I have fond memories of AO, the introductory 18 chapter storyline had me hooked. I suppose the nearest you get with the most recently made MMO's is Tabula Rasa. But TR is missing some of AO's finer touches, an intriguing and ongoing storyline, the social aspect, a more in depth "spell" system, and lets not forget......having to wear silly pink hats just to "twink" in an augmentation. Incidentally, I did try to go back to AO after playing EQ2, Eve and Wow and the graphics engine and controls did make me whince a bit.

With that said, I seem to recall reading somewhere that AoC's engine is an evolution of the AO's engine. How closely they resemble one another on a coding scale is probably like comparing Neanthethal man with present day man. lol.

Still, I hope that AoC will take off well, for that engine might then be considered for other uses, e.g. AO2. :)

And the head dev for AO did say back in June that the game would be getting an upgrade of the rendering engine further down the line.

Who knows? It aint gunna be anytime soon. But we can all hope....and pray.

I probably don't need to spell it out, but whenever a game company tries to cash in on a trend without really understanding what began the trend in the first place, style over substance is the name of the game.

Funny how few even manage to get the "style" part of it right -- but substance is simply out of the question.

Very true, Smedley has even pointed out how EQ2 wasn't really the successor to EQ1. It only utilised certain names and places from the original. From then on it was very different.

However, on my previous subject about utilising the AoC engine for other things, it looks like Funcom are already doing so as mentioned last June, when "The Secret World" was known as "World Online":

"By bringing the massively multiplayer online genre into a modern day setting, the game will potentially appeal to a huge audience of gamers. Utilizing Funcom’s proprietary MMO technology, the DreamWorld engine, ‘The World Online’ is already in an early playable state. The production will ramp up as ‘Age of Conan’ approaches release, and Funcom anticipates to gradually transfer developers from one one project to another in order to reach full team size in 2008."

Seems that there is a possibility that Funcom are developing the AoC engine to be flexible enough to be used in other MMO's. And by doing so, drastically reduce development time of any future MMO's they make.

    So.....who's for AO2? hehehe.

Yup, not going to throw my dream of new AO engine away just yet.

Thing is; I've gotten so used to the graphics that I hope they'd just smoothen things out, but I do hope to put my graphicscard to use when playing AO in the future

I miss the lore the game had, i miss the events they had in the beginning like the assassination of the omni president by a player, i miss the generated missions (which had so much potential), i miss the animated series they had going for a while that was dropped... AO to me at the beginning was the best feeling i ever had in a MMO, however, i feel as they released expansions they lost their roots and discarded alot of good content they had before.

They seem to be getting more on track of late. A lot of the old core Developers got pulled to AoC and they filled the AO Dev spots with a bunch of ppl who have been playing AO for years. Most patches now add new quests or equipment - one very nice buffing armor type only dropped during Halloween week from 'Uncle Pumpkin-Heads' with the highest Quality ones dropping only in PvP zones. That's getting pretty creative.

Well they are also working on Cry Gaia, which will be an MMO... one I'm personally more interested in than AoC.

If anything Tabula Rasa is as close to AO2 we will get in the forseeable future.

It's "The Secret World" (Cry Gaia is better tho >.<)

And yeah, i really want that one too. The background and ideas are fantastic. Right up there with a cyberpunk themed MMO if it ever was made (to which AO and Eve Online probably come closest but not quite :( ).

And since it's from funcom i pray AoC will be a huge success. More money for it <3 (I want to play AoC too tho)
