Yeah the way the game is patched isn't ideal, it uses Bit Torrent, which isn't as fast as a direct download. I have a Fileplanet subscription so I get my patches from there.
Saves Blizzard tons of money in bandwith, but annoys everyone on patch days
Big patches when you first buy the game is the norm for most MMOs though, and Blizzard go one step further than most and keep their retail boxes relatively up-to-date, though that's only really possible because the game still shifts a lot of copies.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...
When I played WoW I think I got my patches from gamershell.com.
It was a lot faster for me than the bit torrent garbage blizz uses. (least it was garbage for me, never worked very well.)
D.
Torrent would be ubar-speedy if they did it the right way btw.
You could mix your normal downloadmirrors as dedicated seeds into the mass of clients and the overall speed for everyone would be extremely good.
you could..
I used the patcher and it was preety fast for me same as direct d/l even better than some direct d/l because they were limited in speed.
However if you got BC and are patching from the origial wow cd then you'll be downloading for many hours.
To answer your question, 1.12 is the most current patch for non BC content, so when that finishes unless you have BC you should not have to patch again I don't believe.
No one is particularly fond of downloading patches, but the good news is that once you finish the initial downloads, then for the most part, patches don't generally take that long even using Blizzard's downloader. There are options to speed things up after the initial downloads as well. You can have patches download in the background while you play or after exiting the game. Now of course you can't actually download the most recent patch in the background while you play because you have to have the most current patch installed to play, but what Blizzard does is release portions of an upcoming patch that you can download in the background. Then on patch day all you have to download is that portion of the patch that has not yet been released and then it installs the patch. Hope that makes some sense. There were some issues with this process in the beginning and most people I think turned it off, but lately I haven't noticed any problems with allowing it to download patches in the background and patch day normally takes me about 5 mins. As always if you have a high speed internet connection it will be faster than if you don't, so your mileage may vary.
I have to agree, patching is never fun
However, with Blizzard's patching, I have to say that it finally isn't a nightmare. I remember patching with EQ way back in the day. If you had to reinstall, you might as well just start it and walk away. Go on a 2 week vacation or repaint the upstairs guest room.
Of course it's going to take a while when you're first starting a game. You've got to download everything that's been added to the game.
But, don't fret, it's worth the wait! Welcome to WoW!
And one more thought while we are on the subject, if you think downloading and installing the patch is aggravating, wait till you have about 10 or more custom addons installed and then realize that all of them have to be downloaded and installed too! Yikes!!!
That's why I still use Cosmos. Most everyone I know hates it because it has so much bloat which is true, however what I like it about it is that I click one button on patch day and get all the most recent updates and they are installed for me automatically. I can even do this while I'm downloading the patch so as soon as the patch is done, I'm ready to play with all my addons up to date. There's a couple that Cosmos doesn't give me that I still download and install, but it's down to 2 or 3, not 10 or more.
Try forwarding the appropriate tcp ports if ur behind a router............also u will notice it saves all the patches to the install folder, save them to another directory for future use.....
