Is TR Easy? Here's an interesting take on the subject.

There are a few interesting things that I did last night while playing TR.  I actually got to play TR for more then a couple hours as my wife went out to get my birthday present, so I had a chance to play for about 5 hours consecutively.

I must have been playing for about 3 hours before I got tired of running back and forth to different way points.  I have a few different characters, and last night I was playing my lvl 16 ranger.  I pretty much could jump in an own any mob I came to, the armor I had held up pretty well, and although it wasn't nearly as strong as my lvl 18 commandos Graviton armor, I really couldn't tell the difference as I ran around the divide.

I decided to clone my lvl 16 ranger. (I know, if you clone after a juncture you're stuck as a ranger still, but it was for testing purposes).  I decided that I would slot my abilities and then fight my way without any armor and weapons until I slowly started picking up items, or at least had the cash to buy some.

As soon as my clone was finished I jumped into the front lines with nothing but my starter armor, my fists, and my level 2 lightning.  All my other skills were slotted, I decided to slot sprint at 4 (which increases speed by 50% and it really is worth it).

I tried boxing with a few bane, but they barely took any damage, and eventhough they rarely hit me, when they did, IT ACTUALLY HURT, who knew without any armor I'd be vulnerable?  How vulnerable?  Well after a lightning shot or two most bane would hit the floor.  Even in large mobs I could survive by shooting lighning bolts and then taking cover until it recharged.  This was actually the most challenging and fun I have had so far playing this game. And this is coming from someone who actually likes the game as it is.

I got a drop of 1 motor assis legging, and a pair of motor assist gloves.  After putting them on, I noticed I was taking quite a bit less damage.  I must have fought like this for about 15-20 minutes until I finally had enough money for a shotgun.  After getting my shotgun, it was basically all over.  Running around the bane in circles and hearding them all into a small crowd pretty much took the cake.

I decided why spend any money on armor?  So I went to take a CP to see if I could do it.  I bought 1 EMP bomb to knock the shields of the CP down, and once they were down I began to heard them all around the corner. I took some damage but when facing 20+ bane at one time you'd think I'd have actually died, especially with no armor.  To no avail, I might as well have been wearing graviton armor instead of 2 pieces of motor assist.

Just an interesting little tidbit.  I also decided, until they fix the teleporters I'm going to hold off on playing, running everywhere really gets boring.

I restarted a character from level one, and have not put any points into Motor Assist or Reflective Armor (saving up for Gravitron). Currently a soldier class. I get killed fairly quickly. I do have up to date Motor Assist around level 9 gear, and the mobs (8-12 in Wilderness)  were around my level 11 solider. The most number of mobs I had on me were six to eight Thanx (sp?). If I get 3 Xanx spiders on me, I go down quick and have to run if I can. On my first character I had Reflective, and it was much easier. I don't see how you can have 20 bane on you with very little armor and not die. Were they around your current level?

You can put a couple of points into reflective and it won't break your build... I have 2 points in it, but won't be investing any more in it. I only did it to help me get to level 15 faster 8)

I was easily able to get all the logos from the logo mentor in the divide at level 11-12, and was killing stuff up to level 19 with no problems.

In crater lake I can easily handle 10 mobs at once. The key is to kite the hounds and kill the mechs first since they can knock you down. The rest go down way easy with my level 11 shotgun >8) Those hounds hurt ! Naturally I snipe as many as I can before I run into there.

Xanx spiders hurt too... they go down quick with lightning and shotgun. Those cone AOE's own. I can't wait to get to commando. I'll be able to pump graviton up to 4 immediately. It's not terribly important since the beta accounts are getting wiped. At least I know which skills work so will be able to invest better next time around. Like fragmentation is a joke. I won't put anything into that skill next time.

Starting from level 1 you hit quests and they pretty much just hand over just about the best armor you can get for your level.  I started a new character on server 2.  I gotta say, it didn't seem much harder the second time around.  Sure the bosses are tougher now, and when you start at a low level it takes longer to kill them, but since I knew what I was doing I breezed through the tutorial and got to level 5 in well under an hour.

I don't think I have supernatural skills or anything.  I can see how if I could go through the game without any armor that any other player would find it simple to go through with armor.  I played without my armor with only a shotgun (firearms at lvl 2) and sprint (lvl 2) and lightning (lvl2) and I didn't have any problems at all. The only times I did end up dying were when I went into instances.  Most of the time it was because I just couldn't get away fast enough when new spawns came in if my shield was already gone.

Once I brought in some EMP bombs everything moved much easier, they're really cheap and they knock out any mechanical enemies as well as any shields right away. Once thats gone just a shot or two from the shotgun and they go down.

I'm just a casual player, I'm sure if there are hardcore players out there they'll have little to no trouble going through this game.

  • Go to phanin research labs and try that.  You will die in 10 seconds.

TR seems to get "harder" in the instances around level 22.  But I can't really say that about the outside world CP's.  I love how the CP's work but level 24 phanin scientists were doing 5 times the damage a level 30 bane does to my sapper.  Also Atta melee does way more damage (maybe has something to do with the sapper shield).

The Atta colony was interesting, although annoying since they have so much health.  But all the pop up ambushes are broken and don't aggro you.

I dunno, there is definitely something funky going on with the difficulty/balancing.

They really need to get a handle on it.  Phanin was broken the other night, but even the small encounters were much better, forcing me to think about using corners and avoiding stuns etc.

It rather weird jeckyll and hyde sorta thing.  I hope one of the patches does something about it or the game is gonna suffer a lot for it.  People need to feel more of an edge and they aren't.

Let's be very clear MMOs are not hard.  They are very easy and predictable.  But you know if you are some rogue in the WoW Barrens and you attack a Raptor you know you can take it, but if you get an add you need to run.  So you gotta pay attention espeically if things are paclked to gether.

This is not any "harder" than TR, but currently TR lacks a lot of edge.  I can just run through an entire battle field without taking much damage.  Granted I have max sapper shield.  At the same time there are some things at the 20+ levels that start to become fairly dangerous.

Its rather whacky, but still most people's experience is a lack of that edge.  Of a bit of danager.  Without that MMOs are just grinds.

I can't say TR is too easy.  That is just wrong to apply to any MMO.  But I can't even definitively say it lacks an edge.  Curently its just kinda whacky and situational, I am not even sure what level of "danger" the devs are trying to go for.

Shotgun kiting a mob of 4 atta is certainly semi-dangerous.  I was able to do fairly well but if I made a mistake and let them melee they would bring me down to 1/4 armor.  That was pretty cool, but pre-20 other than devil's den you don't really see that.  The only time i die outside is when I have 6 howlers on me chain stunning me.

Damage is weird.  I was taking level 48s as a 25, they'd hit me for like 50 damage.  And then all of a sudden one of them would remember that they had 23 levels on me and hit me for like 15K.
