First off, I hope this game lives up to other FF games...

Well, anyone have suggestions on which server to play? One with relatively large and nice community thats good for newbies to the game.

And, what class is best for soloing? I love to solo, but occasionly party. Any suggestions?

Any tips in general would be great, I installed it and plan on starting in the morning when I wake up. Thanks~

First of all i want to say welcome to FFXI Online.. it certain does live up to its name of Final Fantasy, if not better..  FFXI is a MMoRPG that mainly requires Group/party Accomplishments that being said around anything that can be done is mostly group oriented. there are the occasional jobs that allow you to Solo lvling  and other things, such as Beastmaster..  but FFXI wouldnt be a game for someone who loves solo activites.. unless you just want to be an economist but even if that you would need to interact with others to be able to obtain high lvl materials dropped by HNM's and other various resources that require Groups/alliances to obtain. either that or just buy the materials.. and those arent cheap....  but anyways i hope you like it and Adapt to it.. because it has a wonderful and unique Concept.. atleast in an Mmorpg... (Warning: FFXI isnt a ill finish everything in a couple months type of game.. in order to accomplish alot you have to put effort into it.. such as playing ALOT and a long time.. iv played 3-4 years and i play 7-8hrs a day and i bet im not even close to completing everything especially with new things being added all the time)

In Reguards on which server to choose.. it basically depends on what times you normally play.. certain servers are more active at different times of the day.. as for me im on Kujata iv been there for a little over 3-4 years now.  i honestly belive they shoulda left the server selection at random and kept with the World pass to invite friends.. it kept all servers balanced...  Pretty much the only thing i can tell ya is to log on at the time you would most frequently play create a character and do a /sea all it will tell you how many people are on that server at that given time.. then delete the character and make another on a different server...  that is if your looking for a higher population server.... if your looking for a certain type of economy/community just go to the official forums and post around and such.. youll eventually get a few hits at where you might feel welcome...

This game isn't solo friendly. Until you reach level 30 and unlock advanced jobs, the Black Mage has the easiest time soloing. And Titan had a decent population of English speaking players if you play around the hours 6pm - 3am EST.

FFXI is a great game, ive played about 4 years now (currently on hiatis*(spelling?) due to lack of hard drive space) it fits the final fantasy bill very well. soloing is very hard at best, but it is possible with any and every job... that is if you dont mind taking a year to get to 75. but if you must solo, go with a sub job of white mage or ninja, and dont take on anything over easy pray, this game has great content the missions for the chains of promathia expansion are very fun, and you can do them over and over for money. if you dont like working with people, you can just work the auction house for money. and each job has its on style, it all just depend on what you like, i would suggest Red Mage for you. its a great solo class that can make it up to 20 alone, then from 40 to 75 if your smart about it. as far as servers go, it really just depends on who you talk to; where you start; and when you play. a few good servers are Unicorn(currently one of the top 10 worst economies tho, but my home server), siren (my current server), and even azura a small but friendly server.  and if by some small chance you pick Unicorn, find "SoulofThePhenoix" linkshell and tell them Raivyn sent you ^.^ hope you have fun playing

I was only able to play this game about 2 years in college, because i had a ton of free time then :P.  As as my work load pick up I decided to move on to EQ2 and then WOW which had just come out :).

I really loved this game but it truly took tooooo long to play.  Sometimes finding parties was easy but sometimes impossible.  I loved the story and the overall enviornment.  I miss it but i just dont have the time it requires.  If days where 48 hrs long I would consider playing again :P.

Just letting you know that this game is mostly party oriented.  There are some solo classes like beastmaster and you can get some npc guys to help too now so I've heard.  Mostly party though.

It's like other Final Fantasy's with you having to party with others for the most part. That and an awesome story. Can't really say anything that already hasn't been said. Beastmaster, Dragoon, Summoners, ect. (jobs that use pets) can solo for the most part. You would be better off with a party though. Think of it as in the other FF's you kill off your other party members and just fight monsters solo. Not so easy.

I'm on Kujata as well and been playing since NA release and haven't gotten tired of it in the least. Just come into the game with an open mind and patience, you'll be glad you did.

hey people I am going to buy this game  too because I am looking for a diversion and I have some spare money.  Enough to raise an army and conquer the world!!!  But I will hold off on the latter...for now....

Anyway lets say I'm in the US on the central standard time zone, can anyone recommend a server that would have a good pop for my timezone?

If you are not being responded to directly, you are probably on my ignore list.

    Two things guys/gals:

The server populations are about even as far as English Speakers.  Also, please note there are a lot of auto-translation functions and you can easily party with non-english speakers.  So, try to find a server with a friend rather than trying to find a "Busy server".  They have ups and downs.  A low population = less fighting over resources but a higher population = more people buying stuff.  So take your pick.

Well others have done a great job of answering your questions here and, I'm sure it doesn't go without saying that, the fact that there have been so many reasonable, informative and mature responses here - on mmorpg.com no less - is a great testament to the overall type of community FFXI has overall. Mature and helpful.

It is not a game that is friendly to those with the  "Win Button"/"Hit Level Cap In A Week" mindset. And that right there is enough to make me love it... nevermind all the other things about it.

It requires time and effort, an ability to communicate and work well with others - and, yes, even patience at times. No matter how much you're able to solo you will have to inevitably group up if you want to get very far.  Much of the content in FFXI is simply not soloable... But that's a good thing. That reliance on each other in a group setting to slay that beast, or successfully get through a mission is part of what makes FFXI's community so great - you get to know people along the way. Of course there are the bad apples, but they tend to weed themself out pretty fast. In all, party dynamics are one of FFXI's many strengths in my opinion and it always kinda makes me wonder when I see people complain about that aspect of it.

In any case, I think if you go in with an open mind, a willingness to learn and a desire to explore your options and see what you can do - with or without a party - you'll never run out of things to do in FFXI.

    Enjoy!
