Why even bother Richard ?? Open Letter to RG

Dear Richard

Way back when I owned an XT, I bought a game called "Ultima". I was blown away by it, the depth, the story, the fantasy, it was beyond my imagination and drew me into a life of PC gaming that at 41 years old, I now enjoy as much as I did over 20 years ago when I first played one of your games. I played all the sequels and enjoyed them all. Underworld was a masterpice as usual.

I played UO for just over 6 years. Whenever I am asked or do a survey on the question of "whats the best game of all time", my answer is always this.... How do you measure how good a game is except on the basis of how many hours you have put into it ? So on that measure UO wins hands down and I dont think anything I will play in my lifetime will ever beat it.

I live in Australia and I played UO through late Beta by begging a friend in the US to sign me up from his address and send me the links to DL the client etc. I also had him buy me a copy when it launched because it was over 6 months before it hit the shelves in Australia. I was so hyped about UO I cant describe it. i would read the website and post on the beta forums when I wasnt playing, its fair to say it was a huge part of my life for 6 years. I was only finnaly lured away when many of my guild switched to DAOC, but i still kept my accounts and played now and then for some time after. When I finally sold my 2 UO accounts, it was painful.

I met friends all over the world, some of which I have since visited and some who have visited me. I experienced an open ended game play style that has still not been replicated in any other game. I wallowed in content and complexity. I got PK'd so many times and lost so much stuff that I gave up counting and I enjoyed every second of it.

So when I heard about Tabula Rasa, the swelling in my trousers was palpable (sorry kids). I was so thrilled to hear that you had put your soul into a new game after ditching Origin that I could barely contain my enthusiasm. I was so certain that someone of your vision could not possibly fail to draw me in again to another great game.

So imagine my horror, my disapointment, my sadness and feeling of utter betrayal when I logged into the Beta of TR.

Richard this game is a steaming pile of crap mate...... Im not even prepared to go into detail because the title does not deserve my typing time to even begin to list the thousand ways this Wow clone with pissy guns sucks ass.

You have sold out, no souled out in the worst possible way. I know your not short of cash because you can afford to go into space. So I return to the title of my letter.....

Why Bother ???

Why put your talent and imagination to such poor and limited use and turn out something that is so derivative of the worst parts of the MMO industry as it currently stands, as to defy belief.

When will good developers like you get over the numbers flaoting over the head math war, posing as entertaining game play ??

Go and buy a copy of BF2 or Quake Wars. Checkout the gameplay in those titles. It has a tiny little element that has all but been completely banished from MMO gaming, that element is called..... wait for it because you may not have heard it in a while.... FUN!!!

Take your TR world and persistent environments, take your map sizes and control points, lose the math war, put in QW or BF2 style game play and add your character, item and weapon systems, tack on your goofy but liveable story line and THEN..... youd have a game worth playing.

Right now its a sorry joke...

Im going to sign off now before I ruin my image of you by starting to hate....

I want to remember you for the fun you gave me with UO, not for the betrayal you dealt me with TR.

By Richard, Enjoy space....... and one more thing...

Dont hurry back.....

    Dear Richard,

I started gaming along time ago with Bards Tale on the commodore 64. So many games so little time, I have never played one of your games until now.

As someone with a life and limited playing time - I will just say great game. I look forward to many enjoyable hours spent playing Tabula Rasa.

Also the game is being released just before my 42nd birthday - so thanks.

    Dear Richard,

Some peopel don't seem to understand that you are an old man just trying to get one last pay check.  Some people don't realize that the company you work for insisted that you put your name in the game title, or else they would not fund the project.  Some people seem to think every MMO is going to be the end-all be-all and everyone is going to quit their jobs and stop talking to family in order to play it 16 hours a day.  Don't worry, some of us understand that it's just another niche game, and you are just another old man trying to get paid.  It is not a bad game.  You did ok.  Don't worry about the nerds that thought because your name was on it that it must be revolutionary.  They are not so bright.

    Dear Tacos,

How I love you, whether you be crunchy or soft.  I like you with chicken or beef, with lettuce and tomato, hot sauce and sour cream.  Sometimes I enjoy cheese on top as well.  Oh how I look forward to eating you as I play Tabula Rasa.  When I play Tabula Rasa, I will think of you, and the wonderful time we spent, be it short lived.  I have noone to thank but Richard Garriott for creating a game so wonderful as to remind me of those tacos.  Amen.

He's probably laughing at everyone in this forum now. Whether the game is crap or not, there'll be plenty of people buying it just because it says "Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa". That's like saying Britney Spears' songs are made by herself only. There's plenty of people to blame or praise, depending on your stance, and not only this guy who, while we're passing the time in mmorpg forums, is passing his time cruising in space. Like, oh my god, mate!

Let it pass. This game will die or be successful, I don't care, 'cause I didn't like it one bit, but who does care anyway? Just jump on the next ship. (in my case, maybe a pirate ship... or a warhammer ship )

Game won't be as bad as the critics say, nor as wonderful as the fans wish it to be....

Will be a middle of the road game... like most of the offerings coming out these days

While I would place blame at Starr Long, Paul Sage and others feet, Richard Garriott did publicly proclaim he was talking direct control of TR at the beginning of the rewrite 3-4 years ago.  He is directly responsible for the final product and has been given sufficient time, money and resources to develop something at least 2-3x better than this crippled story-RPG (pseudo-game, really) that we see today

I doubt he's going to make it into orbit:

NCsoft has said they won't be funding the trip:
