A few basic questions.

Hi,
I'm thinking about buying this game. However, I have a few questions I'd like to ask first:

1) How big is the world? I've played WoW, Ryzom, GUild wars and CoH, so you can compare to that.
2)Are there mounts? Or, how do you fast travel in this game? teleport?<
3) I assume cities like Minas Tirith are in this game. How immense are they? I really enjoy big, immense cities. WoW did a great job at this.
4) How active is it? # of subscribers doesn't say much.. if you're running around, do you encounter much people, or are you lonely most of the time?
5) How gear dependant is this game? I thought Ryzom had a fantastic gear system, with complex player crafting. WoW's garbage IMO. How sexy are the armours?
6) How's the music? Is it like the soundtrack of the movies? the tunes etc. I loved how WoW used songs from warcraft III, but were still very different.

That's it for now. Maybe I'll come up with more questions later :). I'm downloading the trial right now, so I can get my first impressions in 1.5 hours or so.

Only played GW on that list. I would say LotRO is, at the moment, about as big as Prophecies and Factions combined. Content is being added every few months however.
2)Are there mounts? Or, how do you fast travel in this game? teleport?<
Yes, there are mounts. Either you buy one yourself, or hire one at the stable (slightly faster than your own horse) and there's also map travel which you can use once and hour.
    3) I assume cities like Minas Tirith are in this game. How immense are they? I really enjoy big, immense cities. WoW did a great job at this.
No Minas Tirith (yet?). Bree is in there, and it's reasonably large. All the other cities or towns are smaller. But that's because most are villages, and not cities.
    4) How active is it? # of subscribers doesn't say much.. if you're running around, do you encounter much people, or are you lonely most of the time?
Depends which area. Bree is always packed. Trollshaws is rather empty. Anything else is somewhere in between.
    5) How gear dependant is this game? I thought Ryzom had a fantastic gear system, with complex player crafting. WoW's garbage IMO. How sexy are the armours?
Armours aren't sexy, but that's my personal opinion. Just check screenshots of the game. It's not extremely gear dependant, but you do need to upgrade once in a while.
    6) How's the music? Is it like the soundtrack of the movies? the tunes etc. I loved how WoW used songs from warcraft III, but were still very different.
It's not like the soundtrack of the movie, but it's good nonetheless.

Definitely not as big as Ryzom or WoW...could be as big as GW..

2)Are there mounts? Or, how do you fast travel in this game? teleport?<
Mount, but not til level 35...there are stables where you can rent a horse, but is pricey..plus, you will want to travel on foot to get a feel for the land...plus pick a Hunter, and you can run fast, and later teleport...

    3) I assume cities like Minas Tirith are in this game. How immense are they? I really enjoy big, immense cities. WoW did a great job at this.
Only one major city..Bree...most everything is inside, so it is not very alive, with NPC' strolling around (I have seen maybe one or two..)...most everything else is instanced off or in a house or bldg..

    4) How active is it? # of subscribers doesn't say much.. if you're running around, do you encounter much people, or are you lonely most of the time?
This depends on what you mean by active...if you see one or two running around your area...your golden...but don't expect the large groupings of people like in WoW or EQ2

Bland realistic Renaissance Faire style clothing...so, not the wild fantastic fantasy styles...think the movies of LOTR, and you got the stylings..

One thing I enjoyed...but some places it disappears, and will not return until you change zones...also, in some Instances you run, the sound falls out of sync with what your doing (Great Barrows being an example ...horrible)
That's it for now. Maybe I'll come up with more questions later :). I'm downloading the trial right now, so I can get my first impressions in 1.5 hours or so.
Enjoy the trial...maybe come back and let us know...AFTER the 7 days...not after 7 minutes or 7 hours...k?

    Cheers!

    To answer in order.

    1. The world is a pretty decent size and Turbine is updating with new content pretty regularly. The only continent open currently is Eriador, but it is a good size in itself. others will open with free patched content and expansions.

    2. Yes you can get a mount at level 35, but until then there are horse routes that you can find and pay a fee to travel between. The difference is before 35 you use npc horses which are automated. After 35 you can buy a free roaming horse and go where you want with it.

    3. Minas Tirith is not in yet. Pretty much the game follows the journey of the fellowship and that starts on Eriador, but make no mistake, there is plenty of content currently. There are big cities like Imladris (Rivendale), Bree, Thorin's Hall, and a variety of others.

    4. I play regularly and there are always a lot of people. I went through Archet yesterday which is a starter town and there were a good amount of people running around questing there. Its the same out in the rest of the world to. I never see a dead zone in my travels and that is truly surprising.

    5. Like most MMOGs this game relies on part gear part skill. Someone who knows how to play their class well can survive with lesser gear even if only barely, opposing that someone who has no idea how to play and has bad gear is probably doomed to death, but the better gear certainly does help.

    6. I like the music. I think they did a good job in mixing a theme to Middle-earth that fits the world. Its not Shores epic score from the movies, but it is good in its own right. They even have an actual music system that allows you to buy an instrument and play songs using your keyboard or a scripted music sheet. Its very detailed in that respect and that is one of its more creative features.
