After a lot of MMOs -> Considering EQ2

zspawnzspawn Member Posts: 410

Hey guys

I played WoW extensively but it lost it's feeling of MMO now that endgame is all you can do and weekly raid farming aint my idea of fun.

So I tried GW didn't quite like it (too instanced for my taste), LotRO (which I really like, it has a good polish to it even if nothin revolutionary) and Vanguard which I absolutely love as a concept however it still needs work.

I am looking for a game with a nice solid feel in interface etc. - But with decent quests you actually bother to read the story and that are compelling rather than KILL 50 COWS and some crafting that has a point + importance (like the crafts are actually worth it and can be unique).

(Note: PvP is not important for me)

For example to go on a big quest to kill some guy, get his evil enchanted sword as a reward bla bla.

Like an "epic" feeling. Like you'd play some great 9 out of 10 single player RPG but grouped with other people (if you can understand what I mean).

Pretty much the feeling Oblivion gives you when you go through the story but online :)

Well EQ2 is the only one I didn't try so far...

So to all EQ2 players out there...

Would you recommend me EQ2 considering what I said? :)

I'm afraid there's nothing out right now that will curb your hunger. Age of Conan promises alot of what we're after but we'll have to wait and see (and hope for an open beta). Games which are balanced and well established are also dated, while games which are pretty also tend to be shallow. It's difficult to find the right mix of depth as well as eye-candy. And I need character customization beyond pick 1 of 2 faces and 1 of 3 hair styles and go, so the asian game market isn't for me.

By polished I don't necessarily mean eye candy.

Just an indication that they really put some effort in their game.

EQ2 seems nice visually and in interface etc. but I can't really find some definite info on how the game progresses (quality / types of quests / crafting etc.)

I don't mind that it's dated btw, sometime age makes a game better:)

I played Wow for 2 years and EQ2 for 1 year. I enjoyed Wow alot more, but I enjoy EQ 1 the most. If you like Pve go with EQ1. If you like Pvp go with wow. EQ2 just isn't good to me. but that's my opinion after 8 years of mmo'ing.

IMO EQ2 has by far the best quest content of any MMO today.  Yes it has it’s share of mundane quests, but the longer questlines are excellent.  The quest system is somewhat interactive in that you need to interact with the quest giver.  Heritage/Signature/hallmark quests as well as the “main quest” for the various expansions are excellent.   The last type can require some grinding and camping at times and will generally take quite a bit of time to finish.

Crafting is solid, much better then WoW but doesn’t give much diversity in your products.  I.E. you make the same items and quality as everyone else in your trade unless you get a limited use recipe from a raid zone or something.  That said, there is a market for crafted goods and you can make a profit crafting if you want.  You need to interact with the crafting table to make items but after you figure it out it becomes pretty routine

I will agree here...EQ2 quests do not feel like grinding for grindings sake. The interconnectivity of a lot of quests are nice also (I may have 2 different quests, but one objective for example)

I also feel like I am doing more for the overall world than say WoW or LOTRO (GW was in it's own boat here, as the story was the objective, and felt more fleshed out)

Overall, EQ2 is more challenging than some other MMO's which feel more "user firendly"...what I mean, is I have to be more aware of what I am doing to build my character with crafting, AA's, skill layouts, etc..

Plus, try the trial...how can you go wrong trying a free demo to see if it meets your needs

    Cheers!

EQ2 questing as a mixture of both the mundane quest and the epic storyline quests.

Heritage quests, signature quests, and hallmark quests are very well done. some of the adventure packs have thier own quest line to follow and even some of the zones and dungeons. which makes em fun. BUT it seems every 10 levels or so you are working on a new set of quests and exploring a new area.

It never starts to get that mundane feeling except when you cant find anyone to group with or chat with. I start to feel lonely and lose interest.

The graphics and zones are very visual appealing and there really isnt any bugs or lose of polish untill you get into the high end content. Then you will find stuff that never got finished or bugs the developers havent dealt with yet. BUT thats the very top of the ladder and most people never see it.

IMO i am like you, i have played so many mmo's that I came back to this one mostly to play with my wife and i feel that if i am going to stay with this game it is going to take me making some friends to play with.

The community is pretty good sized in eq2 and when the day is over its that community that will bring you back or chase you away.

    Thx for your replies guys.

you know I really loved the feel of vanguard (i mean how massive it is, the exploring, the questing etc.) but it lacks the polish + stability to make me stay 100% on it at the moment.

People told me it's a lot like EQ2 that's why I am considering it (and downloading the trial as we speak).

I saw some videos of solo quest fighting dragons etc. Seemed like a great adventure that's worth playing and talking about.

Now I'm just hoping its not just great videos for a shallow game *cough* wow * cough* :P

Kunark will bring a massive feel to EQ2.  The zones will be a lot bigger then every other zones in the game (it seems from what i'm reading).

As for quests, what others have said :)

at the moment I can't decide what to do :S

I have active WoW, Vanguard and LotrO while downloading EQ2 trial :P

So let me inform you: :P

WoW pretty much died on me...I made a PvP guild to somehow try and revive the game for me but well..

The game is grindy in every single thing. Nobody joins WSG cause it doesn't give as many points as AV.

It ain't a PvP game I agree but still the only thing ppl care is purple items and the fastest way to reach them.

People only wanna play 10 arena games just they get their points so they can get that shiny epic pvp item...

So I'm just waiting for it to freeze due to non-renewal.

Vanguard. I keep coming back to this but I'm fairly new and lost. It's kind of hard to move from WoW to VG since WoW is made for newer ppl to the genre and makes you a bit lazy regarding doing things or learning new games :P

What keeps me kind of away from VG is to commit to it and then have it changed. I'd rather wait for it a few more months to give it a real evaluation. But it's one of my serious candidates :P

Lotro I dunno it's so polished and feel great to play. Smooth, nice looking, feels like playing a single player Lotr game but with other ppl...The polish, good performance and being an already finished game keeps me comin back for some reason :P

I wonder if EQ2 is a better Lotro or VG that will totally get me hooked...Waiting for the trial to finish downloading :)

EQII is somewhere between Vanguard and WOW, leaning more towards the WOW side of things.  Personally, I like it because, if you can't find a group, you can always solo.  Their little 5 dollar bonus packs are great diversions between expansions, and they give a lot of free content to their player base.  This is currently my favorite MMO, though I am not currently subscribed to any (due to a lack of time and interest).

Vanguard is a group based game, just like EQI.  If you can't find a group, you're screwed.  Not too many solo quests, and everything you CAN do solo is a grind (but hey, thats what MMOs are).

Straight up, here the deal, EQ2 is the best on the market, i left it because of its short comings, and am going back to it at the release of the new expansion in November.

This game as some great quests, it also has some of the most retarded " kill 10 of the mob that on spawns 2 per hour(exaggeration, but you get my point), ok, your done that, go do it again. Luckily the retarded quests like that are generally optional. This game is very guild focused, especially when combined with its heavy raid focus. Its great if you get in a good guild, terrible if you don't.

The graphics are all right, i loved the interface, and love it even more when i found out about the UI mod website and the map mod site.

The crafting is annoying and fun all at once, though if your smart, you'll eventually learn how to cheat at crafting.

Thats a bout it i can list for the major pluses to the game as opposed to other mmo's currently on the market. there are a lot of hopefuls near release, especially around march 2008, but past such hopefuls have proven good ideas and concepts don't necessarily equal a winner. want proof, look at Vanguard.
