omg this is a computer game not an mmo the only mmo aspect is online play so lets just make diablo a mmo oo or halo ther all mmo's now to mmo stands for massive 5 people is not massive 5 people is just online play
Since no real definition exists for what is an MMO.... what's the point of debating it? (and we already had about 50 other threads on the same subject when GW's was added)
Its on the site because the people who run it chose to put it there... all the justification it needs really.

Don't we have the ideal compromise now? The game has its own forum so we can talk about it, but it isn't in the games list of the main page and thus not fully featured as any full mmorpg would be. That should be alright for everybody.
hmm.. who cares? It's multiplayer, it's rpg.. if you don't like it, go away? The game looks to be alot more mmo than alot of them out there. Meaning, massive amounts of people playing instead of very few, so there!
It's Massive: Stations (towns) are NOT instanced, and all players can interact with eachother.
It's Multiplayer: obviously
It's Online: Even has a monthly fee, that's optional. As well as an optional singleplayer component. Don't forget other games (Age of Conan) will have an offline/singleplayer component too.
It's an RPG.
It's an MMO just as much as Age of Conan, DDO, GW, Dungeon Runners, or any other game.
Sounds like some people are just looking for an excuse to have a hissy fit.

Well the MMORPG genre is changing and getting more diversified... HGL is as much a MMORPG as GW is, and I dare say much much more than Fury for example (multiplayer beat-em-up with RPG elements to be precise).
Instancing kinda changed the whole MMO field - we could say that even EVE is not a true MMORPG in UO sense - if you look very closely it is composed of a series of interconnected instances (closed off zones if you will) called "Star Systems" - you could say it is a bunch of GW-style hubs with combat enabled in them and nothing in between...
And stop the bickering please - If it's about perisistant character growth and it's played online then it is a MMORPG... the rest are details. (And yes, a few of todays' online FPSs could well be considered MMORPGs, no one will get killed if they get included as well...)
As for this site, they might narrow their scope a bit if they don't want to start covering most upcoming games... Imho they're in position a site called "3D Games" might have been in 1993 say... What used to be a niche genre is now exploding into mainstream.

Please refer to old GW threads to see this discussion in its entirety. Thank you.
From what I have heard through other various posts. Hellgate will be as much as an MMO as the Guild Wars Series is.
It's got just as many elements of an MMO as GW does if not more in some cases.
if this game isn't an MMO then neither is dungeon runners.

I am inclined to agree that it is not an MMO. But who cares? It looks great and I will be giving it a try.
Guild Wars is not an MMO either.
