game play questions.

this game looks like its going to be alot of fun.  Will the world be an open world like Vanguard, L2, WOW, DAOC, ect... or an instanced world like Guild wars or D2?  Or are the servers going to be setup in a complety diffrent way then thoes?

    It's an instanced world.

  • So its like youre own instance,  gather with a group of friends and other people in a town then go out and just kill everything in the zone?  Since its instances im guess the PvP is instances?

Edit:  how many people can be in the online world at once?

Well yes, you meet in the underground stations of London, which seems to be safe territory. But the town itself above ground is instanced and it's flooded with demons which you hack and slash. Like a reversed dungeon game.

I don't know anything about the pvp. To my mind a hack and slash is more about the pve, you kill hordes of monsters with simple moves and mainly the mouse buttons to attack. PvP is important for me in consitant world mmorpgs like TCoS, I don't care with this game. Nevertheless I'm sure there will be options at least after release. Keep in mind, this is a mostly single player game like Diablo2, there is no need to balance classes in view of pvp.

Edit: All players online are in one world at once as far as I know. Just like Guild Wars where you met in the international district. That's why I'm gonna play this game, sick of people who claim Hellgate and Guild Wars aren't mmos while they are playing their 10.000 maximum load big lan-party servers.

Im intrested in this style of game play as a change of pace to all the "cookie cutter" games that have been realesed on the heals of games that helped defined the genre (L2, WoW like'em or hate them they get copied over and over).

Maybe a lil instancing is what we need until we get to check out next years attemts by conan and war to revitalize what is a bloated and failing industry ( just one persons view).

Doesnt seem like a new style of game play to me, just an old revived style.  "Hack and Slash"  it seems like that game stye to me with update features.

Think Diablo2. In 3D. With guns. And all the sights of London.

That is the short version of what HGL is.

Yes it's just Diablo2 seven years later. Gameplay is kinda mixed between the traditional hack&slash like Diablo2, MMOs like WoW and FPS shooters.

Hellgate for all purposes is based on the Guild Wars style of instanced zones, all randomised every time you go into them, so your never get the same experience on that level twice.

The safe zones, ie the underground stations are like the town hubs in guild wars where you can meet people, chat, go to auction houses, and most stuff that a mmorpg provides.

But thats where the similarities end, because the character development is more diverse then GW, having talent trees, weapon customisations, loads more special skills and fast paced combat more akin to WoW then GW.

To be honest its a varitable mix of genres wrapped up ina  Mmorpg bow :)

I didnt say it was a new style, I just said a change of pace from what we been seeing.  Ya know games like Rapplez, Archlord and PW that are nothing more then straight rips offs of L2 and/or WoW.  Really this isnt much diffrent then the games you two mentioned or even Halo but its an oprtunity for some of us who maybe never trying those titles to get into it with out having to go buy an X-Box or play a very dated game like Diablo.

So basicly I agree with you guys but maybe just putting a diffrent twist on it
