Why would Bill Gates of the Nr1 worlds biggest software comany step down?
Playing:World of Warcraft. Played:Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies. Tried:Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
Well, I imagine Bill left because he was the richest man in the world and had nothing left to prove. I don't think the CEO of Turbine would be in that type of situation... lol
Well, Bill Gates left to focus on his philanthropic work, funding research to find cures for diseases.
I think Anderson got tossed 'cause of D&DO. Server merges already rofl.
I guess no one else thinks its significant that someone from outside of Turbine is now its CEO, when LOTRO is supposedly the "2nd largest MMORPG", and is such a "success".
Turbine being a privately held company...
LORTO cost a lot of money to develop...
Turbine sure as heck didn't make enough money from AC1, AC2, and DDO to finance the development of LORTO...
Perhaps someone who was a lawyer and a salesman got some venture capital from some venture capital companies in Boston...
Perhaps said companies didn't like the return on said investment...
Of course, I probably just made all this information up...
Seems someone else knows a little something here as well...
Some more background information - apparently after M-Qube, Jim Crowley moved into the venture capital world. Working with Highland Capital Partners, who have been existing venture capital partners with Turbine for years, since early on in the development of the game. They hold at least one, and I'm pretty sure I remember hearing 2, seats on the Turbine board of directors. Can't name the people sitting, but I'd bet Jim was one of them - or at least became one, eventually.
I didn't say it, but it must be true . Hey, that company name looks familiar though...
looks like turbine didnt get quite the number of subs they were expecting..at least they can be happy it pulled an 'everquest 2' of flops rather than an all out vanguard or autoassault.
But what did they honestly expect?Theyve not really brought anything new to the table, and theres no way near enough content.Think how badly it'll suffer after war and aoc are released, not to mention others such as potbs and spellborne. Only a major expansion can save it now.
maybe lotro will get a NGE re-package,and everyone can be gandalf or something.I can almost see the buyable flying eagle mounts now.

What are you talking about? Lotro is a sucses, just becuase thereischange of management does not mean a thing you can always expect a certain amount of change to staff after a MMO game is released though. Most of the staff they hire specialise in setting everything up, not maintaining it. Maybe that was Jeff's goal. Get LOTRO up and running and then go to the next job. Lotro is the 2nd biggest MMO released, and shipped more copies of the game than WoW on first week of release! The game has plenty of subscribers...

Sure it might have sold well in the first week, but how many are still playing. I expect a very high percentage of those people have seen how boring the game is and how little it really has to offer and cancelled.
Its already off the top spot of the rated MMO list on the front page of this site, I don't think it will be that long before it starts slipping further as people return to change their scores for the game.

I dont think so , you have to keep in mind its Lord of the rings, it had a almost bug free launch never before seen in mmo history , great storyline that people will want to keep following and its the casual players that make the difrents and RP, Pve players that are not intrested in Pvp, also anyone who bought a lifetime sub and left before 2 years is big profit for Turbine, i think this game will stay here for a very long time, if you take the facts that a lot of bad mmos are still around today, and the nummers reports of its sucses,a lot of new content in devolpent for the upcomming year wich lead new and old players back, no i think this one will devently stand its ground.

But what did they honestly expect? They've not really brought anything new to the table, and there's no way near enough content.
They never said LOTRO was supposed to bring anything new to the table. That's what all you kids forget or just don't bother to check up on. LOTRO was always supposed to be very "safe" and traditional, not pushing any boundaries, perhaps the tweak or few to existing concepts, and that's what it did. No new game has "enough" content, especially for powergamers. Anyone who powergames a brand-new release is just a dumbass, all games (including WoW) release with limited content, especially end-game content.
Think how badly it'll suffer after war and aoc are released, not to mention others such as potbs and spellborne.
How badly it will suffer compared to four other brand-new games that will also release with "limited content?" I don't care how much extra PvP one has, or how much ship dueling another has, the grand total of content in each will be limited, and those of you who will undoubtedly rush into each of them with your WoW epeens fully erect and powergame through them will be bitching and whining about their "lack of content" too.
In looking at Turbine's past releases, I think that Jeff Anderson probably didn't know how to handle an actual success. He's great with the mediocre launches, but LOTRO looks like it's been way bigger than anything else Turbine has done before - now that they have a successful game and money coming in, etc..., they probably needed to pull in someone with some actual business background to run the place properly. Hopefully it works - LOTRO is definitely an awesome game.

You know, I'm getting sick and tired of people calling anyone who criticises this game a 'kid' or 'kiddie' or telling them to go back to 'wow'
Im a 35+ year old dad of three who works as a senior manager in one of the top 10 companies in the UK, hardly a kid - and I think it is boring when you get to 50 - it is crying out for an expansion, even now.

Personally, I think it is already boring by level 35..
Overall, if you say anything bad about the game here, the attacks against the character of the poster who states this is superfluous....and it is I believe due to the fact that the attacker feels how the game is lackluster (I use this word often, as that is how LOTRO feels), but does not want anyone else to state this fact.
As to lack of content...I do not believe LOTRO is suffering from this...it suffers from the content being a snooze fest...straight up...
Hopefully Turbine will realize this, and try to bring some more excitement to the game..
Cheers!
(EDIT: Also note...articles like this from large traffic sites does not help the image of LOTRO one bit...so, the fact that the "posters" of MMORPG are not the only ones to notice the fading of LOTRO, should be a sign...
Kotaku (Quote: Man, Lord of the Rings Online sure dropped off the radar quick!)
I don't recall ever in my life telling anyone to "go back to WoW" so that point is moot from the get-go.
And yeah, the low-fantasy can seem lackluster whether someone is a walking Tolkien encyclopedia or just one of us normal people. I'm enjoying the game but I'm also being extremely casual about it because I've been aware since Day One that the higher content is limited and even the 30+ content gets a bit sparse. I play other high-fantasy games to balance out LOTRO's low-fantasy.
I couldn't care less if someone doesn't like the game. What I *was* criticizing is how, on one hand with every other game the forum people bash it because it didn't deliver what the devs said it would. With LOTRO, they're bashing it because it delivered exactly what Turbine said it would. It remains to be seen if Turbine was wise to spend so much time making a "safe" game that doesn't really push anything when MMO vets claim to want at least *something* new. The vets are a smaller crowd, but their voice is louder, for better or worse.
I have no doubt whatsoever that LOTRO is boring at 50. My guild knows I raided in other games, and yes WoW was one. They're anxious for me to help them in Helegrod but if I get bored running different raids per week why should I rush to 50 to run a single raid? And that applies to my original point about LOTRO, WAR, AoC, PotBS, etc: they're all going to launch with "limited" content, and if one knows that going in yet still chooses to power-game his way to level cap... *sigh*
But what did they honestly expect? They've not really brought anything new to the table, and there's no way near enough content. They never said LOTRO was supposed to bring anything new to the table. You could say that about pretty much any game on this forum tbh.The everquest 2 fanbois for example have taken over from the vanbois (R.I.P) in sheer rabidness and 'games doing great.everythings rosy' spreading. Its just the way it is.
Pretty much any game of the original everquest model is going to be a snooze fest.Theyre all exactly the same thing.Other than wow, there hasnt been 1 hugely successful MMO of this style in years, the reason is likely because theres no real difference to them in how they play or the structure.
Take a certain MMO thats on the radar as being released early next year,a game ive waited ages for but after playing im massively disappointed, because its the exact game ive been playing for years but in a shiny new skin....the only games I can se on the horizon that break the mould slightly are WAR and potbs. Not sure about conan as ive not really read much into it,but what I do know is that the gear isnt such a factor.
Im sick of games that consist of levelling up for gear and nothing else.New content? Why heres another new raid or new land zone where you can gain another 10 levels and then raid for a whole new set of gear!

I am afraid I will have to agree. MMO's have really become rote...and no matter what you play or where you go...it will be the same. I guess it will have to boil down to community then...do I enjoy the people I am playing with...so I can discuss the game, or even world events...as all MMO's are glorified chat rooms, with stuff to do to wile away your time.
Also, does it look good to me, do I feel like running the game for something to do? Finally, are the things I am doing over and over fun at least to do "over and over"...
As to WAR...it will have some different options...but...it will still be level grind with elves, orcs and dwarves...nothing new there..AoC?...Nothing new except for combat....TR...was slightly different...then they had to include the normal MMO fare...
No..I think MY next big game will be Mass Effect. If I want an RPG...this game will bring something totally new to the table for sure...and I don't have to worry about the whiners complaining about bugs, nerfs, guild drama's and boredom...etc...

Playing:World of Warcraft. Played:Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies. Tried:Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
All criticizing aside, and back to the topic. I wonder where Jeff Anderson is today as well. I'm still very interested in this change and the logic behind it.
With regard to the flame war at hand, LOTRO has lived up to my expectations. I don't perceive a lack of content and I'm quite happy, I've taken my time with this one and have focused on many other things while leveling from title gathering, traits to crafting, started playing in early beta and just dinged 43, I'm loving the game personally. I mean its freaking Middle-Earth!!!, I don't want to just rush to the end. But maybe that's just me.
Regardless, I always thought Jeff A. was instrumental in LOTRO and because of this, he'll be missed. Still would like to know more info though.
Some folks will like LOTRO, some won't. It all comes down to personal taste. Same thing with most MMO's. I wouldn't fault anyone who didn't find LOTRO entertaining (even though I happen to REALLY like it)... that's all a matter of personal taste. I'll take people to task for saying things that objectively aren't true (like if some-one complained it was a buggy release compared to other MMO's). Obviously, enough people like it to give it a healthy subsriber base.... although it's also not the most popular thing since the invention of the wheel... if that result lives up to Turbines expectations or not I really don't know.
The games that seem to really flop are the ones that don't deliver on the expectations that they've set up among the majority of thier players either due to technical reasons (performance, bugs) or game experience reasons... (cough, Vanguard, cough). Personaly I think Turbine did a pretty good job delivering the type of game to players that it stated it would..... a polished, well put together MMO based on Tolkiens Lore.... nothing mold breaking or anything like that. I don't really see the need why all MMO's have to be ground-breaking or anything like that.... alot of times your just in the mood for a plain old burger and fries... not every meal has to be something you've never experienced before.
Sometimes, I think folks are just bored with MMO's in general. Nothing wrong with that... I used to love skiing. Haven't done it in years.... when you got right down to it, no matter where you skied it was all just going downhill on snow with boards strapped to your feet.... after awhile it just didn't seem that interesting anymore and every slope seemed pretty much the same. You get burned out.... a few years later.... I'm thinking it might be interesting again. That's the way life is.

Cheers!
Well you got 3 kinds of criticisers, one that criticises the game , one that criticises the criticiser, and the one that criticises the one that criticises the criticiser.
Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.
Hey, what happened to Jeff? i have just contact him In this may.
