Chinese MMORPG player spends 280,000 on a virtual weapon

http://bbs.17173.com/topics/2887/200709/21/2418046,1.html

The story roughly translates as such:

To celebrate the 4th anniversary of the Legend of Mir, the Chinese game publisher SDO held a special 'grab the Great Jaded of Blade of Darkness' 'event'. The event ran from July 21st and August 31st of 2007, the player who exchanges most aniybt if money into SDO's virtual currency within that timeframe will be eligible for an ultra rare weapon - the Great Jaded Blade of Darkness

The competition became fierce, according to the company's official website, at 4pm on August the 27th, the player who went by the account name of dav****96 led the way with 165,000 in deposits, closely followed by she****9 with 154,000.

Unofficially the player forum had she****9 leading with 215,500 in deposits. In the following 7 hours, player she****9's deposits jumped up to 260500, but it was still not enough to beat dav****96 who eventually won out with 283,000 and was duly rewarded with the Great Jaded Blade of Darkness.

When interviewed afterwards by journalists, the company had this to say. "the investment on behalf of our player base will not only provide the company with an increase in our quality of service, but will also pave the  pave for new srevices such as other games etc". The company spokesmen "in actual fact, players who splash out such extravagence only make up 3% of the total server population, furthermore, the choice was made by the player and only affirms the value of our company.

283000 what, potatoes ? what currency ? that plays a huge part here because it may seem alot but depending on what currency it is it might be alot less than you think.

True, $283,000 is a lot but 283,000 Pesos is only $26,100(Still a lot but no where near $283,000). Without the currency that this amount is in it's hard to judge how stupid this guy really is.

was thinking the exact same, i dont know currency very well but their currency doesnt seem to hold much weight over all. maybe it was 283000 children?

Alot of money. Yup pretty stupid. He could have used that money to buy stock in the game company or at least invested it and now would have something besides an imaginary weapon to show for it.

I wonder if that blade had lead paint in it. If so he should get a refund asap. You hit giant spider for 2600 dmg and 5850 lead paint damage. Your target dies a horrible death.

Well this guy is a definate bell end for spending that sort of cash on an in game item. But hey, if he has money to burn and wants to do it thats fine. Either way the guys obviously a total idiot.

The stupid thing is, this might actually give other games companies ideas like this, next we will see Blizzard setting up an auction for a "super destruction blade of the apocalypse" and Chuck Norris will give them 10mil for it.

it's a cash shop game so they still have all the credits they invested in.  and one person gets a shiny sword.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Does this imply that it was paid for with in-game, virtual money? VIrtual Currency? IS the translation off perhaps?

  • to clear the confusion, you had to deposit real money into the virtual currency bank, in other words, exchange real money into virtual money

If you can clear another thing I am wondering about maybe?

Did the winner have to use said amount to get the sword, or did the one who exhange the most cash get the sword for free and could keep the cash he put in?

Is there a way in this game to exchange the other way around, something like Entropia Universe?

he got both.  the sword was just a bonus to the biggest spender.

Why should Chuck Norris offer that much money for something he is already without any weapon?

  • spraguepspraguep Member Posts: 61

He didn't buy the sword he won it by injecting a lot of money into the economy; and I assume he can take the money out one way or another.

  • spankybusspankybus Member UncommonPosts: 1,367

Wow, this is the most asenine thing I have ever heard of.....To pay real-life cash for something that isn't real is pretty stupid to begin with...but that much cash is enough to change a persons life if it was simply given to them. They could go back to school. make a down payment on a house. I hope this game is cancelled in the next month, so the people who injected all of that money realize their monumental stupidity.

I doubt that. Usually when you convert money to a virtual currency whether its turning quarters into tokens at an arcade or turning money into virtual dollars, there is no refund whatsoever. If that were the case then absolutely anyone could have put craploads of money in their accounts for that game and then just take them out. Would be pointless.

The only game that lets you go backwards with the exchange rate is Project Entropia. Their whole business model is around the fact that you can apparently make cash from playing the game.(even though most end up losing it)

I want to clear something up...You said to pay money for something that isn't "real"? Who's to say digital data is not "real"? When a broadcasting company uses after effects to make a commercial for some company, its just digital data with no mass....but its still worth something. When someones models a 3d model in Maya and sells the "digital data" of that model online for others to use...is that not "real"? It may be some item in some game thats just data, but who's to say its not real just because it has no physical mass?

well here is the issue with this contest.  It reminds me of the old publisher clearing house style giveaways.  You "don't have to buy" anything but, it helps your chances to win.  Technically yes they still may have the virtual cash in their bank but how much money was spent by other consumers for this chance to win essentially nothing?  Virtual weapon for even by MMO standards paying (I doubt it was 280k real currency) what ever the exchange rate for the the virtual money that they purchased.  I'm sure it was still a few thousand cash that was sent in and multiply that times couple hundred people turns it into a blind auction of sorts with the winner still losing his money as well as all the runner ups.  F2P is nice but, looking at this contest seems like more of a lets see how many idiots will plunk down a shitload of cash for a single reward item.  Unless you have some way of recovering the cash back from the game to real money congradulations you just spent a few weeks or months salary / savings on NADA!....  I dunno Rent/food/car payment/utilities or a chance to win an intangible object within a game that I play for fun that is supposedly free?  Screw it I'll just live on the street with the knowledge I have the item and can gloat to the bums next to me about how I won it and wasted my life savings doing so......
