Well if you are into fantasy, I would say EQ 2. They have a free trial so you cant go wrong by testing it. I hear EQ 1 is good too, but havn't tried it yet
If you are into sci-fi try Anarchy Online. If you pay for Shadowlands (Addon) it also contains fantasy...
I recommend not to read guides at the beginning, just try it out and search for a group, they will pull you trough the entire game as you repeat joining groups where you are. You can quickly create a new character and lvl him up as soon as you are familiar with the settings.
Good classes are Martial Artist, Soldier, if your more into fantasy try enforcer
Excuse my bad english, im european
btw AO is free in 2007 (without any updrade) you can lvl in "tempel of the three winds" to lvl 60 then do missions
Lord of the Rings is PVE based. There is a PVP element, but there are no chenges made to PVE for the sake of PVP. Give it a shot with the 7 day trial.
Dont fall for this. With book 11 there is going to be changes because of there PvP. There is actually a large arguement on in the community about this right now but a couple of the changes just dont make sense other than changing it to work better in PvP. That said this really is a PvE based game.

Final Fantasy XI is an excellent PvE game. New expansion coming out next month, and cheap collection editions with all current expansions available.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
