long time DaoC player expresses concerns

So i was really hoping for daoc 2 but.... Since mythic was bought out by EA they will go the path of UO and try for commercial success instead of gaming innovation. My only question is  this; Are any of the original developers from Daoc  even working on WAR? or is it completely just a team full of  EA people"

 Start teh form greif.................. now...

  • Makeing a sequal to an MMO is never good becuase people expect the same thing from the orgional. like EQ and EQ2.

I think Mythic is making it and EA just owns them.  Have to reamber that EA is just a publisher.

Actually, if you looked at the history of WAR you would know that it was already well into development when EA bought them.  In fact, WAR was one of the reasons EA did buy them as they saw the market potential of the game.  For Mythic it was an obvious win-win as not only did the owners make a pretty penny but the purse suddenly got much deeper.

As for your 'commercial success instead of gaming innovation' comment - get real.  Without commercial successes there will be no innovation - you cannot have one without the other.  EA has actually surprised me recently with moves like buying Mythic and the incredible level of funding they have afforded them as well as the surprise move of sinking a huge sum of money into their new surprise IP 'Dead Space' which is looking pretty damn awesome.

In the end EA is like any other company out there - they want to make money.

Sure its about making money, but other high profile purchases in the past from EA have resulted in the taking apart of talented teams, like BullFrog to mention just one, and now people are kinda dubious because of EA's move to buy the parent company of Bioware. They have before got in the way of established unique teams, broken them up and concentrated on putting out mainstream media.

Quite a few of the devs from DAoC are working on War but its quite clear the game wont really embelish the things that made DAoC unique imo. With the context of working on an I.P. such as Warhammer, EA already knew it would appeal to the mainstream gamer with the direction the game is taking, hence the gobble up of Mythic.

Im all for the progression of the genre via innovation and boundary pushing to bring unique styles in, but totally worried for the meddlings of large corporate companies with the promise of investment only to push on you a 'not so hot' strict contract devoid of certain freedoms. When publishing contracts are limited to a few companies its bad for the industry, freedom for negiotation lessens, and the potential for an original I.P. to emerge usually gets handed over part and parcel to the publisher.

True enough, but they are now showing signs of learning from past mistakes.  Mythic, for example, is still made up of the same people in the key positions and from talks with the devs EA made no demands on putting 'their' people in key positions as they have done in the past.  Instead, they are letting Mythic maintain some independence rather than absorbing them into the collective.

EA has to walk a thin line since they ultimately answer to shareholders and shareholders historically can be a very unforgiving lot.  Risk taking is not something shareholders really appreciate.  When a risk goes wrong they demand that heads roll.

Personally I think that any business that goes public is a fool.  It may generate a nice windfall of cash but the long-run problems usually wind up costing the company the very culture that made them what they were.  EA is a prime example of this.  They were not always the big gorilla they are now.  They were once a small independent company that struggled to get where they are today.  Now they are a monster who must show reliable profit continuously.

Once again, if you've been following WAR, you'd know that all important Mythic personel that have been on the WAR project are still on the WAR project.

Jeff Hickman, Josh Drescher, Adam Gersh, Lance Robertson, and well, like I said, all of the key devs are still there. The people in charge of the project haven't gone anywhere.

Additionally, if you think any radical changes from things that existed in DAoC are spawned from EA's pressence. Consider this - Imperator, Mythics next MMO before they switched to WAR  - was going to be ENTIRELY PvE.

Think people woulda blamed EA for that? No, because EA didn't own them when they were making Imperator, and they didn't buy them for Imperator.
