Dang - good job guys...
...sure pretty much the standard fare elements as far as MMO's go; crafting, leveling, etc. MMOs are built on these mechanics. If you're playing an MMO, these are the base building blocks of this particular style of computer game. Complaining about these elements in any MMO is like complaining that all the new cars have steering wheels.
"...when will a car come out with something besides a steering wheel!!???? meh... I'm going back to driving my Pinto..."
...of course if a new MMO comes out and it doesn't have any of these elements, then there will be a set of people who complain about this as well.
Given the genre and mechanics we have to work with in this day and age, with regards to MMO's; I say great job TR team -- dang...
Really nice instances with thought and great design elements behind them. They remind me already of some of the great WoW instances and I've only been in the lower level ones in TR so far.
Excellent terrain designs with creative ways of dividing up territory. You actually have to explore around to get to know the map and how to get to different points.
Nice ways of integrating the instances with the map and overall map navigation.
I'm not sure we're ever going to see something truly 'revolutionary' in the MMO genre for awhile yet. Maybe we will, I'm not sure. As far as TR goes, I'm pleasantly surprised and having fun and I can see and feel the tremendous amount of work that went in to this title. You guys should be proud. You've just earned my $50.00 and my monthly fee for as long as I'm having fun!
Thanks again and Kudos!

I'm glad you are enjoying the game... but it appears you are more forgiving than some others. (including myself).
I do expect game companies to try and bring some originality to the "standard fare" elements, shame if TR didn't really bother to try, considering its "creator" was at one time a visionary designer.
We'll see how it goes...if it launches OK and gets decent reviews I might give it a try one day... (not playing the beta game anymore)

If the OP were right, and that's how mmo's MUST do, like there's some kind of federal LAW as if game designers were watched by cops to keep 'em from going against these rules, which is an idiotic idea as itself, then The zero punctuation reviewer is right, and mmo's are games for no-life geeks.
If this were true I would have abandonned mmo's since ages.
But I believe that mmo's don't obey dumb rules someone wants to see because He's square-minded.

OP Actually I don't agree... let me give you an example...
All mmo's have grind (steering wheel) just some have more grind than others and some let you enjoy the grind - so it doesn't feel so much like a grind.
So no, I can't agree with your analogy.
But heh nice try.
It was an ugly an uninspiring experience. Mainly because It all feels like it has been done before. Maybe without the sticky aim....
The only game on the horizon that even looks like having a slight chance of taking my interest for a shooting style MMO would be BF3.
Seems the penny may have dropped for EA that there is an opportunity to mesh non grinding gameplay with MMO elements. BF3 is slated to have huge maps with 80 players in one area, persistent stats, stat building as well as vehicle and weapon unlocks. A large persistent map split into battlefields and more.
The market has been crying out for a FPS/MMO crossover game for years and Im afraid TR doesnt even come close to filling that hole. It brings nothing to the table that SWG or AO havnt already done better.

The primary downfall to BF3 is EA. If they don't see huge numbers in a short time frame it will have the same fate as so many other MMO's EA has attempted. EA couldn't run WoW successfully.

BF3 isn't like a standard MMO... The biggest difference is the fact that there is no persistant world...The primary downfall to BF3 is EA. If they don't see huge numbers in a short time frame it will have the same fate as so many other MMO's EA has attempted. EA couldn't run WoW successfully.
We already know EA can handle the Battlefield games as they have already done so several times before and continue to maintain the communities for their seperete titles.
Also, you are right. EA couldn't run WoW with the same numbers as Blizzard, because, let's face it, a lot of their subscribers started (or stay) simply because it's Blizzard. So really, that argument doesn't hold.

I too think it is a alright game to sit down and play, but considering you play monthly, people will obviously be more picky and get their money worth, and so they should, and they should challenge the devs to come up with new things.
Yes, mmo uses standard building blocks, not cause it is the right way, it is cause it is the safest way to go.
Going outside the blueprint which people have used to many years now, is risky and not everyone want to take such a risk when so much money goes into creating a game.
Unless it is an Indie company, that is mostly where innovative games are coming from, at least that is what i feel and noticed lately.
As for EA and why they have so much money, it isn't cause they are doing things right in the area of making games, not that they are doing it wrong, it is simply the way they do things outside being a developers, believe it or not, EA also concentrate on intellectual properties, where as they buy out companies, which would be mysticmythic or something and bioware and pandemic studio only a few days ago, that is how EA is surviving, and also ruining the industry. I for one have nothing again EA and the games they PUBLISH through the OTHER companies.
Back to TR...
I think the game had war like feeling actually when your running around and fighting, seeing ships fly over, monsters coming all around you etc.
And honestly, if people think they can do a better job, why don't you try enter the industry? And make a game that is "best"?
Didn't think so.....
Last line of defence in the tired and desperate argument bin....
I think someone has a quote that sums this up better than I ever could.
