So let me get this straight... People are debating that we should reject Turkey as our ally when we need them the most because of Turkey's attempted genocide of the Armenian people a century ago? What's there to debate about? I like this plan! Let's hold present-day Turkey responsible for the errors of their grandfathers' grandfathers' fathers. In fact we should invade them and execute their head of state because if we're going to hold them accountable for the genocide of a people, then I would hope that we'd do more than simply ignore them.

No, actually, what's really weird is why things like this matter to the Congress. So what if genocide is defined as genocide? Why should that be causing an uproar?
Besides that, it wasn't even Turkey that did it, it was the Ottoman Empire, which has since been deconglomerated.

Well the US congress is only doing its job.
French and other nations has already recognise it as a genocide.
The problem for US is more complicated though.
Should the congress go and do the right thing by recognising it as genocide?
Or shold they ignore it for the sake of good relationship with Turkey?
That's a big dilemma.

This is not the case.
The question is if we, or you rather as we allready have, should label what happened back then for what it was, genocide.
The problem is that if you do then relations with Turkey will be strained, but this is all due to Turkey, you guys would be doing the rigth thing.
The problem is them and their willingness to face the truth, the outcome of this will depend on your willingness to aknowledge the truth.
But it is all politics and you can put a blind eye to almost anything if it servers your purpose, the US is not unique in this regard.

As said above, this is not a question of saying they are reponsible, but a question of making them admit they made a mystake !
It is as if you would say that germany shouldn't reconised the genocide on the juive ... Just think of it as a mark of RESPECT towards the Human RIGHTS ...

they should have recognized it a long time ago....
I don't see why our Congress has to "recognize" it at all. It's not current. It was not conducted by anyone still alive. It has no direct bearing on our country NOW.
"Recognizing" the genocide is meaningless and irrelevent.
If we have a problem with the current Turkish government or the country in general, then sure, we should deal with those *current* issues.
This whole issue seems to me to be a ploy of some sort, rather than an honest issue -- a tool to manipulate current politics.
PS. There's no such thing as "human rights". You do not have any inherent rights simply because you are a human being.
I hate it when our nation's government gets so caught up in semantics that it stops functioning...it already functions poorly enough without stupid crap like this clogging up the system.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
shut the hell up hows is 1.5 mil innocent civilians dieing stupid......the dam turks killed them and tortured them.
This is all part of a concerted effort to sink Turkey's bid for the EU. Turkey's response to this is ridiculous and their reactionary response is exactly what the elements in the EU and US want that don't want Turkey to be allowed in the EU.
Turkey is the one that needs to carefully consider their position. The US can survive without Turkey, though it's a short term strategic loss. Turkey's entire future is at stake here, their future in NATO and their potential future in the EU (which is looking to be severely unlikely at this point).
All of this combined with Turkey getting bogged down in Northern Iraq (which would inflame tensions in Kurdish Turkey). Hmm...all I can say is I'm glad I'm not Turkish.

The genocide aspect itself is not the thing he is saying is stupid. What is stupid is bringing up that issue *now*.
Seriously. What *possible* good can it do? Can it bring back those that were killed? No. Can it bring justice to those who caused it? No. Is there *anyone* still alive who can be blamed for what happened? No.
There is nothing to be gained by taking up this matter, and much to be lost.
It seems clear to me that this issue is being used to manipulate current policy and sentiment. If you want to look at something really repulsive, think of this: the murders of all those people is being *used* by today's politicians to manipulate current policy and sentiment. I think using a past genocide to make political hay is pretty low, don't you?
