Something just keeps bringing me back. Have a level 28 Necro, but I would like to switch to some other type of class. Any suggestions on whats fun to play? In EQ1 I was a ranger and really liked playing her. Im basically interested in bein VIABLE for groups and in demand. I dont mind being a healer (I know those are always in demand) but I also want to be able to solo well and be self sufficient. Good to be back
So Whatcha think?

After playing WoW since release and FFXI for about 3 years I tried my EQ2 account again. I am falling inlove with it and itching to play my guy, too bad he's in a duo with my friend who just got back from Iraq and is still getting his computer and internet running cause I want to play and explore more.
I played a Berserker Ratonga in one of the new newbie areas though, must say it was a nice change of pace and I played for a couple hours straight without even a single bored feeling, unlike in LOTR:O where I got bored after a couple minutes. Don't get me wrong though the music and scenery are GREAT but the Dwarf newbie area is a little boring.
But to your question, it seems like it's pretty much a solo game leveling up so pretty much anything you play is for you first, so I'd say stick to what YOU find fun. Grouping might/will/morethenlikely will come into play a LOT at level cap, so perhaps a Guardian or a offensive healer of some sort? I really enjoy my fury, little bit of a weak healer at the moment but his nukes rock and orginally our duo was me as a Inquistor but he was just soooooo damn boring, although Gnome Inquisitors look teh sexeh.
I haven't even began to dive into his AA's because the 2nd tree wasn't even out when I was playing him. I need to scrounge up more points though.
Good luck though in finding what you enjoy, i'm off to try Vanguard while I wait on my friend. Goodnight!
Depends what you are looking for
What types of classes do you like? There's always a depend for pretty much every class, and they are all viable in some way.
Don't try to find what's in demand, that wont get you far, theres always a need for everything. You need to decide if you wanter be a... healer, tank dps, hybrid, caster, melee... ect.
-------------------------
Id like to be some sort of melee class.
Ive always like ranger classes so ill take a look into that as well as Rogue type classes.
Casters really dont do it for me much, I find more fun and action in mail/plate classes. I would think I prefer mail over plate.
Also, as in eq1, the strange - off - the - wall classes as I called them. Shaman, druid, etc. Classes that could heal, cast dps, heal, buff, all kinds of things could be fun as well.

If you want a melee class that can solo well then try out the Berserker, Monk, Bruiser or Swashbuckler. All of those are also welcome in groups the Zerker can tank groups and raids and the others can DPS or tank for small groups.
Brawlers probably best solo melee class and are ok in heroic content. However they are not used very much in raiding.
I would suggest you to look at the brawlers or Swashbuckler/Brigand. Brawlers is very good soloer, and decent tanks (Very good tanks if played right). Maybe not the most popular group class, but very popular in duo or trio setups. Swashbuckler/Brigand in the other hand is decent soloers, and apresiated in groups and raids.
Ranger in EQ2 is more "pure" dps class, they can solo (like all classes), but you may find it a bit limited compared to some other classes. They do great damage though
If you want to play a healer, and mix in some melee skills, you can look at the Inquisitor or the Warden. Both can convert, with the achievements system, their spells into combat arts, which makes them a melee-healer. Inquisitor wear plate, and I believe can get most out of the melee spec, but Warden's isn't that far behind.

I think almost every class can solo now to some extent.. but some class solo slightly better than others due to their really good offensive and defensive abilities. I play a fury druid which I think is a pretty good soloer and I can take on yellow vvv group mobs without dying too fast.
If you are going to be leveling to 80 (the new level cap nect month), the best thing to do is spend a little time leveling character classes that appear interesting up to level 20 or so. You can do that very fast and get a bit of a feel for the class.
Most of all, find something you really like to play because even with the ability to level fairly quickly to 50, you will be spending a lot of time on that character. And leveing from 50 to 70 is not fast unless you have some really regular friends to play with.
If you are looking for a rare class, that varies by server. On Everfrost, rare classes are bards and enchanters. Dirges, Coercers, Troubadours, Templars and Illusionists on Everfrost are in high demand at the end game, but are not easy to level up so many people do not play them.
Berserkers, Shadowknights, Paladins, Furys, Wizards and Druids are very, very, highly populated and in little demand now at the end game.
Inquisitors are rare and highly desired in raids, as are shaman classes (delifers and mystics)
Brigands are a blast to play if you don't mind the positionals. They solo every well and can deal soem serious damage. Brigans debuff mobs' defensive skills and are highly desired at the end game for groups and raids.
Swashbucklers are the opposite of the Brigand. Big damage on group mobs, mostly debuff mob offensive skills, highly desired for groups and raids.
Rangers and their counterpart, the assassin are pure DPS scout classes. They can solo if you are highly skilled, but they are challenging to do so.
