Mostly I say that because I know I could not still be playing bf1942 after 3 years. I grew bored if it within a month. The diverse gameplay and attention to realism and detail in ww2ol has kept me hooked for 3 years now and I doubt that will change. If anything the game grows that much better, refined, and diverse with each patch.
WW2OL is on a level all its own. There is nothing else out there like it.
Bf1942 is an arcade action game on small maps. WWII Online is more of a simulation and plays on a map the size of Europe at 1/2 scale with more than 400 modelled cities.
It has a real damage model, no hit points like Bf1942. The view distance is several kilometers.
Its different...

----------------------------------- Life is too short to play bad games.
The two games really cannot be compared. While they are both set in WWII, that's about the only similarity they have. BF:42 is a fun game to play for a month or two, but the "hit point" damage model is a bit arcadish. WWIIOL uses a physics model based on actual penetration values for the various weapons to determine if the weapon did any damage at all. If the weapon did penetrate, the the velocity of the weapon and location of the penetration are then looked at to determine if anything would have been hit. It's possible to penetrate a vehicle and not hit a single critical object and thus do no damage. Or then again, it might hit the engine, ammo, fuel, or occupents and depending on what was hit, the affects are taken into account. The variables are many, so there's no hard and fast rule to it, unlike BF:42.
WWIIOL does have a very big learning curve. It's not what I'd call a Fast Action Shooter. It takes teamwork and coordination to accomplish anything. Rambo types are not going to find a lot to do, nor are they fondly looked upon by the team players. There are often periods where there is little action going on, as one side or another is preparing for an attack, which can take some time in organizing. Defense is a little easier to setup, but that doesn't in any way mean defense is always successful. A determined attacker who is smart and does not waste his equipment will defeat a disorganized enemy who throws their equipement away without coordinating it nearly every time.
There's nothing else like this game available anywhere. If you enjoy combat and working with others, give it a try!
It is hard to compare the 2 games, those who love BF1942 will point out the hectic pase and how fun and action packed it is instantly. Tho who love WWIIol will point out the correctness & war-like simulation and how grand it is!
2 different games - depends on what you want - simulation or arcade (I too like arcade Im not bashing it)
I cant seem to figure out what is so good about this game by looking and screens and reading about it. i want a trial!! . But the real question is is WWII better then BFV or BF2.
The graphics are much better than in these old Screenshots now.

Well, if you want my opinion, it blows the entire BF series of games out of the water. There is no way to compare. There's nothing else like WWIIOL in existence.
In all honesty, the real question should be "Is BF1942 even close to being as good as WWIIOL?" And that answer would be no. WWIIOL hasn't even reached the halfway mark of its potential, and its the greatest, and most immersive WWII game that I have ever played. ( I am afraid of what will happen when it acheives its full potential, I am already a WWIIOL addict) And I will be completly honest with you, this game is not for everyone. It takes a certain breed of intelligent, quick thinking and determined people to get the full benifits this game has to offer.

Well, I've been playing this game for over two years now and still haven't really gotten tired of it. You have to watch out though, I've played it for long periods of time and gotten burnt out, but that only leads to a week or so break at the most. It's a pretty tough game though, you don't get to take multiple hits in the chest like in BF and still live. One shot and you're dead. The learning curve is pretty steep and most manuals are kind of outdated due to the constant changes so you'll probably want to ask the players if you need any help (channel 99 and regular training days on training server).
If you like fighting in a huge organized attacks you should join a squad (BKB, Windhund, 31st Wrecking Crew, AST). All in all, WWIIOL is way better than BF:1942, it doesn't even compare.

There really is no comparision. The only area where BF1942 beats WWIIOL is in raw graphics, and name one MMOG that can't be beat in graphics by another title in the same genre.
The game has to be played to be understood fully and is much more imersive than games with single player offline missions on small maps. I have been playing for over a year and still love it. I play other games for short periods of time, beat them and log into WWIIOL and tell my friends.
Huge scope Realism Teamwork on a large scale Sound Largest play area of any game i know, larger scope for tactical and strategic use Depth of gameplay, be a lowly grunt, or a commander in charge of thousands (only 2 of these though ) Excellent dev support. Patches every 6-8 weeks bringing more content, improved graphics, deeper gameplay, new vehicles etc More mature playerbase, average age is 30. Players that know their stuff and have the patience to get an attack right. Its not owned by EA. I could go on.....
Oh i forgot to metion that it supports TrackIR, one of the few (or is it the only) MMO to support it. You can look around just by moving your head (your real heaad lol)
Nothing compares...I have every BF game and they are all collecting dust cause they get boring....Plus we usually get something new every month(Patch)...don't have to wait for expansion pack.
Aside from great visual range (4km, that's about 20 times BF42, it's even bigger than any map in BF42) and (mostly) accurate damage models (no grenade will kill an enemy tank like in BF42), it's really mainly the joint operations of many players (30 tank column anyone, plus airforce support) and the tactical gameplay. WW2ol is really the first game that taught me to fight unfairly . Shoot em in the dark, knife em in the back, the whole nine yards of mean tricks.
Here come some screenshots to show you the real meaning of joint operations, mostly made by me:
A joint tank column of GHC's 12. Armee is on the way to assault the allied held town of Haybes in the Meuse Valley, participating (all the guys in yellow) 91st Sturmbattallion, while I wait as 88 to be towed to a vantage point above town Some notes on that picture: - You see rank+nametags over friendly units, color coded (standard white, yellow on my system) if they are in your squad - This screenshot is in the old days before we got the new trees, so don't notice if the treelines look ugly - This is a huge ass tank column and you see only a small part of it, behind that bend in the road ahead are more and behind me are some, too
Allied air units forming up over a friendly airfield, also in the days of the old ugly trees and this screen was not made by me
I sit in my Destroyer (Type 1934) and suddenly see a big formation german HE111 bombers passing over on their way to the english factories
The german squad PLD (which I'm now a member of) assaults an enemy destroyer with a lot of Fairmile B (that's a small british coastal guard boat), the ultimate victory of the dwarfs over Gulliver, some plane out of friend/foe recognition range in the upper left corner EDIT: My boat lists heavily to port after taking some hits
BF is fun, adrenaline rush from the moment you log into a game, but it starts to go downhill from there... jump shoot jump shoot grenade jump shoot die... respawn, shoot jump etc...whatever depth there is to the game diminishes with time.
Wwiiol may seem slow and boring at first, but it gets better when you start to realise how the pieces fall together. Unparalleled immersiveness of the 1/2 scaled world with huge viewable distances, organic ebb-flow of player controlled situations and structures and the rush of watching a well executed operation..
I'm currently taking a break from the game, but most of us have to from time to time given the intensity of the game.
Originally posted by XLater I'm currently taking a break from the game, but most of us have to from time to time given the intensity of the game.
A very good point. In most games, you tire of them and move on. In WWIIOL, the intensity of a Campaign often leaves you feeling burnt out and mentaly and physically exhausted. It is often necessary to take a break for a time to get the strength of will back before playing again. It's another factor, albeit an odd one, that makes this game so different from anything else on the market.
My advice is that if you decide to try it, find a mentor if you can. In fact find a squad to mentor you. If you later decide to move on to another squad, no hard feelings.
Also don't try to learn everything at once. Too many people do that and get burnt out and frustrated. Learn one part then experiment with others. This way as you learn another part and experience some frustration, you can always go back to the part you know for some fun.
My advice learn to love the Rifleman, the lowest, yet most important character in the game. Then when you master that venture out and try other stuff.

Bf42? LoL

This game is a World War II Simulation, or atleast the closest to that

How cool is that ?
Better?
Depends on what you are looking for:
Quick action, nice (but comic style) graphics and such - BF42
Realistic weapons, tactical gameplay and an intense atmosphere - WWIIol
WW2 Online is more true to WW2, while BF42 uses some ideas and names from WW2 and pretty much turns it into an arcade game.
If you're looking for a realistic WW2 game, WW2 Online is for you.

The two games are poles apart.
BF1942 is just another game where you spawn in, charge about and shoot the first thing you see.
WWII is a war simulation. It's totally immersive, requiring different skills in what ever you're doing.
Nothing else comes close.
