I have a few questions about the game, in no real order.
How hard is it to pick up? A day? A week? Or real long since the game is so old and some people have been there for awhile?
What do people use for controls, and how invovled does it get? I have heard using joystick is best, all I have is keyboard, mouse, and a PS2 lookalike controller.
How much down time is there? As is in are you only a few mintues from battle constantly, or are there long walks/drives/flys to battle? Or just sometimes nothing going on and its just quiet?
Is the game on real time, or sped up time? Day/night, etc.
And feel free to add anything else you think might help me decide.
Thanks

Depx,
I'll try my best to answer as well as I can - if you're unsure on anything or have more questions, feel free to toss me an email through here.

I've been playing for three years and I still learn new things all the time. Your first week or so will probably be pretty rough, but I recommend using offline mode for a bit of target practice and a visit to http://www.snoopstuff.com for some great lessons on how best to utilize the equipment in game.
Once you're in and playing, hook up with a squad (even if you don't join) and check channel 99 for help. It will speed up the learning curve immensely if you're not out there trying to go it on your own.
As infantry you'll want to use the KB/Mouse combo. For any vehicles/planes/AT guns a joystick is recommended. My brother plays the game with a dual analog (PS2 Style) controller with no problems - it's pretty easy to set up for a tank or AT gun, though I think flying with it might be somewhat tougher.
This varies a lot, kind of like real war - sometimes you'll spawn in and be under fire almost immediately if the enemy is trying to take the town you're in. Other times you'll have to make a short trip for an attack, usually 5 minutes or so from battle. At other times, you may be on a defensive patrol and not see anything for a while. If you're searching for insta-action, it's probably not the game for you, but I have yet to find a time you can't find a battle within 5 minutes if you're looking for that.
It's sped up - night lasts for a shorter period of time and days are something like 4 real-life hours long, I believe.
As for additional stuff, there's a level of team play in this game that has kept me playing for over three years since I joined. The bugs exist (you'll read about plenty of them on here, I suppose), but if you find them relatively minor as I do, there's nothing more rewarding than a good hard-fought battle with a group. It's a completely different element from any other online game I've ever played.

I might add that it's been the only game I've ever played where I'm genuinely nervous about dying.
Nothing beats the excitement of burying your head into the ground while tank rounds are whistling overhead, bombs are dropping all around you and shaking the ground, and you can hear the approaching footsteps of enemy infantry.

1) Join the "Starter-channel" on your side, other ppl ingame will tell how, for sure.
2) Catch up:
Inf - up to 2 weeks, esp. sapper and greandier need a bit training
Anti tank(aircraft) gun - Up to 2 weeks, AA maybe longer (depends on skill)
Tanks - Maybe 1 month to learn all advantages
naval - long, few chances to build up rank for destroyers
Aircraft - very long, playing 1 year and still learning. But there is a point at which you suddenly turn from target drone into pilot.
I play the game with keyboard/mouse only.
No problems with any vehicle - flying is no problem too.
If you have trouble with the control-config: ask the forum of wwiionline.com!
Make sure that you contact other player(s) so that they can introduce you into the game.
Have fun with this phantastic game!
Ive been playing 2 days now, first impressions:
Learning curve is quite steep, not just how you do missions, etc, but most of the time you wont know where to go.
You will rarely find enemy cos they are hidden so well and know the game inside out, so most of the time you die without even knowing why.
I find myself going to places and i dont know why, and i have no purpose in game whatsoever.
This is because i dont have a squad, which in turn is because most squads are very serious, and hence you ahve to go through a thorough process of signing up for things and making contacts between people, etc. All i want is to join up with players in game, so i dont have to wonder around solo with nowhere to go.
However, the graphics arent bad,, but you want to update your drivers. Flying aircraft is great fun, but you will again find yourself dying due to someone shooting at you from a tree 30km away
Many people say this, and ill say it again. Dont even think about playing without a squad, cos even if you figured out the complex mechanics of this game, without a squad you're basically playing solo,, not in an army, and whatever you do no one will know about or you will always miss out on action. Im still working on joining a squad, but its alot of hassle to try and join one

You don't actually have to JOIN a squad, just get on the same channel and hook up with them, ask where's the fight, whats going on, what you can do to help and then just follow them around, or get on channel 99 and ask for advice.

Yep any Squad worth joining imo will automatically integrate all "non-squads" into their operations with no trouble or fuss. The trick is to play it cool and bounce around a bit until you find a group you seem to get along well with and then spend time with them until either they or you are sure enough to bring up the question of joining.
The reason I say that is because some squads do operate very differently then others. For instance I sat and listened to 3-4 squad guys trash talking each other, I guess thats their thing but I'm generally more interested in intelligent conversation between battle and "short, sweet, and informative." voice comms. I'm sure it was great fun for them, it was all in good fun I assure you, but I get enough of that at work on jobsite, I don't need it in game too.
Also nothing pisses me off more in combat then having some guy give me a running commentary about his latest kill on a 109 which is fine, but not when I'm trying to talk over him to let me wingman know too "BREAK!", or guys who use bad comms protocol like, "I have a 109 on me." ... ummm ok, well mabye you should tell us where you are, and include altitude because pilots fight in 3D.
Simple things like that which may seem small, but after you've been doing this for 2 years you can't help but strive to get it done better then in the days gone past.
That's just the way I am I guess, but the important thing is to know what you are looking for first before going looking for it. That way you know to look for in making your decision. Websites are a great way to get the quick and dirty on squads, but only by playing with them can you really get a feel for the unit. We all play as a team on some level, but how we play as a team can vary greatly. Be sure you get a good feel for a group and really like the members and how they operate before you go throug the process of getting signed up with them.
Vegetto/Zorba, I've mentione dto Del369 to keep an eye out for you. He's usually on channel 25. As you already were aware of, there's a bunch of English players who use Channel 22 also. I'd hazard to guess someone will be snatching you up shortly. The reaosn for the hassles in signing up isn't so much the seriousness of the squads, but the need for some small form of security. It is a War sim and there's nothing worse then accidently passing critical info to your virtual enemy. Heh heh...
I know I've offered before, but should you play any Axis while waiting to join a Brit squad, feel free to run with the Iron Wolves. We can be found on Channel 11. Just tell them Pruitt sent you.
Have Fun!

I went ahead and got it last night.
First thing to say is that the players in this game are all very nice and helpful, I played EQ for almost 3yrs and it was rare that people were nice there. So it was a nice change.
At first I would go in as inf, walk around aimlessly, and find nothing heh.
Eventually talked to some guys, got some of the channels for the area I was in, and would start going places that asked for help. First real "adventure" was getting in a truck with 6 other guys and heading over to a base of the axis, had probably 20 inf on the ground, and some air support. I ended up hiding with 3 other guys in some bushes while the base we were going to attack had panzers rolling out of it constantly. Eventually the 4 of us got spotted, I did somehow shoot one guy dead then died heh. Was fun.
Got in to some good battles the rest of the night and am about halfway through PFC with the French. By the end of the night I was shooting airplanes with an AA gun, got 1 and didnt die, so decided to call it a night heh.
I am having trouble getting my PS2 analog to work well with it, not sure if its the control (practically new), or the game. But can be very "bouncy" in its directions. I did get an airplane off the ground for 10 secs before flipping over and dying though heh.
The only bad thing about this game so far is the "spawn" camping when someone is about to seige a base they just shoot at the spawns, kind of lame, but rare problem.
Thanks for all the answers.
PS- Go under the name Alward, and am currently playing with the French.
Spawn camping is generally a big sign for 'don't spawn here, you've already lost control of this area!'
As for the controller issues, try going into the keymapper and upping the deadband - it will make the response on the analog sticks a little bit less 'hair-trigger'. The analog sticks have a very short range of motion as compared to a full-size joystick, so you're probably just suffering a result of the stick being smaller in scale.

Yep definately try adjusting your Calibration settings in the Keymapper you can give each axis its own custom deadband and sensitivity settings. Its in the top right hand corner of the keymapper.
I'm glad to hear you had an adventurous first day and even got in some kills. GJ! S!
