most people here talk about how horrible this game is.. and i'll tell you what, their are a ton of people who play and really really enjoy the game..most information here is just not true that I read.
Soe has fixed TONS AND TONS of bugs since i started playing in may, and i will tell you it's truely a rewarding experience, i've played all the MMO's (wow, eqII, daoc, tabula, etc. etc..) and i'm sticking with vg, problem is most people don't have sufficent machines to run the game, it is a system hog.. i run with 4gig of ram (vista 64) 2900pro, 6000+ proc.. and guess what i have the game maxed, and it looks better then anything on the market..
.. what i suggest is to avoid reading this forum about vanguard if you have interest in the game, go buy the game, and try it yourself. Most people who are new to the game say "wow this isn't anything like what i read" .. or "what took me so long to try it?'
Classes are refreshing and unique.. Quests are fun, people are more mature the most games, and the game itself is fantastic.. try it.. the vanguard forum on mmorpg.com are just a bunch of people having the same conversation "oohhh vanguard is broke" they are doing the pee-pee dance and pointing laughing..
Try it.. u'll like it, if you can run i t

okey dokey there Sport.
Vanguard is a disgrace and a debacle of epic proportions. The only good thing about VG is that it does have some freedom of movement such as climbing mountains, etc but the gameplay is from 1999. It is the most un-fun activity that you can do outside of hard labor. The engine behind VG is broken and can not be fixed regardless of the amount of time spent.
Let VG die so that the new generation of MMORPGs can come through and bring more people to the genre. VG started as a mess and is still a mess. It is perhaps the worst gaming experience you can have in a MMORPG. Let it die a peaceful death.
There are a lot of good games coming out and already out such as PoTBS, EQ2, WoW, and even GuildWars that people can spend their time and money on.
This game is dead. It was killed by the combined efforts of Sigil and SOE. If the recent news and developements haven't convinced you of that, well have fun wasting your time and money. Many of us knew it beta the game was in trouble. Thats the truth about VG.
The game is not dead. These games can survive with low populations for years (look at SWG) but it will take a lot of work and time to make something of it.
Also, I agree with the OP that the game is not bad but how can you know if your only level 14? There is much of the game you have not seen as far as combat goes.
However, with SOE in charge, odds are they will never save the game but I hope they prove me wrong.
Vaedur,
Vangaurd isn't just about have a good rig to play the game. The performance problems vary from person to person regardless of their systems, be they great or horrible. It isn't just about the quality of your computer as the problems are random and sometimes can't be nailed to equipement. I am saying that as it is what I have seen several devs say, especially if you run Nvidia or Vista as those two generally have more problems across the board with Vangaurd. Some people will run Vista and Nvidia however and how no problems. The game is just feundementally buggy. SOE is still top priority on fixing the game and the next patch is a ton bug fixes that haven't hit yet.
I am not saying you are wrong, just that people will have a random experience with the game. Also Vangaurd still has a long long way to go before you can say, don't listen to the naysayers. Estimates say 150-170k people left the game already and that isn't just people being mean. There is something behind that.
If you are encouraging people to play/try it by spending money at least be up front about the potential future of the game. Let them know they just cut the dev team for a second time and maybe a wait and see would be better?
I don't think most of the posters here talk about how "broken" the game is. I would say that it has an equal number of loyal defenders and outspoken critics with gloom and doomsayers being lowest on the list.
The game has had population problems and many subscribers have left the game. I know this doesn't mean squat to you, and to be honest it doesn't mean squat to me either. As long as I can field a raid I could care less how many people are running around the world. Two servers is sufficient in that aspect.
The problem is justifying cost when the game generates little to no revenue. Financiers don't throw money at things without pretty solid evidence there will be a return.
You appear to be enjoying the game and that's well and good. I'm glad for you, as well as everyone else that enjoys their experience with VG. However, not everyone has the expedable income to go buy every game that comes out just to test it. Therefore, people look to sites such as this for information.
I'm sorry if you are offended by people who judge VG from their perspective and it differs from yours, but that's the only "truth" about forums. People have different views and voice them here. Facts and forum posts rarely collide.
I've said in the past that the game to me was good in it's core design and I enjoyed it for many months. That said, SOE will destroy the game VG was intended to be at conception and lay their own mark on it. They always do. This is why I've quit the game and I'm sure others have for the same reasons.
I'm not a gloom and doomsayer. I believe VG will grow and evolve. Some people may enjoy rolling with the changes. I have rolled with the SOE evolution enough times to know that it never turns out to be as enjoyable as when it began.
This game seems to be entirely too controversial :P. I personally feel that SOE is handling it extremely well. It speaks highly of them.
Most people hate this game because they were expecting so much more. A revolution perhaps.
Yes it has bugs but after latest update it's much much better and the core gameplay is quite enjoyable imho.
Most people in these forums bash whatever is out there except WoW that's considered godly even if it's a half-decent simplistic game at heart and wait for the WAR messiah (which will just be a WoW: The Sequel tbh).
To sum it up, some people need to realise they do not speak the ultimate and only truth. They only express their opinion.
And subscriptions are not the best factor to judge a game.
Look at junk food even. Best selling, worst quality so that doesn't make them good, only popular
my 2 cents from someone who doesn't believe SOE is trying to take over the world or expressing sadistic tendencies by wreckin every MMO on this planet (play WoW for 3 years and come back and tell me how much Blizzard listens to players or helps them out )
A person would be a fool to blindly buy a game without reading what is out there, good and bad. Buying without researching is not smart, after all, 50 beans or whatever isn't chump change, not to me at least.
Coming to MMORPG to insult the posters on the site is childish, no offence, but it really is. You're trolling with this, insinuating that negative opinions are just empty bitching, especially considering the overall negative reviews, views, and opinions expressed.
You like the game and thats great for you, but going about it this way is petty.
I hope that SoE make VG a good game, but lets face it, the honeymoon is over, the game got incredibly bad press, Mcquaid was poison, and many gamers have moved on and will not return.
It seems to be generally accepted, here at least, that the game failed. Sure, SoE may try to fix it, but to my mind its too little, to late.
Have fun with it though.
I'm definitely trying the trial when it hits. The copious amounts of hater-ade have intrigued me. If potbs is as good as I hope, a successful Vanguard trial may inch me towards a station pass.
Classes aren't unique, the quests are the same as any other mmo, the people are the people there's good and bad in EVERY mmo, I think the game is ass, but hey everyone is entitled to an opinion.
MMORPG just reflects the general popular opinion on this game and it's not to far off the mark for most people, they aimed at and hit a niche market.
Nothing wrong with the game if you're into grindy games I suppose. I played EQ and UO, that got all the grinding I ever needed to do done completely.
I have station pass and of course vanguard is part of that, I try it every patch... its gotten better than it was at release, but it's still not a game most people will enjoy regardless of the hardware they're using... and even if you enjoy "hardcore" games, if you don't have the hardware to run the game, vanguard is miserable.
Edit: I was trying to think of a way to describe Vanguard and equate it to another game and why people dislike it so much... and it finally hit me-- For the most part vanguard suffers from the same problem ddo suffers from... high expectation and complete failure on the part of the dev team. Players expected a lot from those two games and the devs just didn't deliver the features, game, or really anything the players expected because they got caught up in their "vision(tm)" of what the game should be instead of what the players wanted.

Vanguard arguably has best core systems of combat. crafting and class diversity of any MMO ever released buit it is beiong run by the worst company. SOE cares nothing about Vanguard and has done nothing for the game. Besides marketing, hype and lies they have done zero. They have fixed qusts and bugs that SIgil was working on but they have added nothing. They took the LFG system and Fellowship system SIgil had already finished and released it months later. They took performance and made it much worse for many many months despite declining population numbers. Although the new patch today did actually incrase perfomance and the memory leak and CTD problem SOE created is almost gone since they added improvements on the test server two weeks ago.
Vanguard has a development team half the size of EQ2 team. SOE could care less about Vanguard it is only there for station package and to use as a marketing tool for its inferior EQ2 game. To say SOE has done anything good is ridicolous. They could care less. They are putting no effort into saving this game.
Whta actually has SOE done in 6 months besides intoroducing content SIgil had almost finished? You can say APW. But Sigil started working on APW back in March or April and its still not done. What actually is SOE doing with all their time besides sending ex Vanguard players emails offering free copies and play time for EQ2? The answer is simple they are doing virtually nothing.
While I agree Vanguard is a great game and will say its the most enjoyable game I have played since DAOC one has to face facts SOE is not deserving of any praise for Vanguard. They have done nothing except slowly dumb down the game.
Classes aren't unique, the quests are the same as any other mmo, the people are the people there's good and bad in EVERY mmo, I think the game is ass, but hey everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Classes in Vanguard are very unique. The bard class is amazing. The ability to write and customize your own songs. By far the best bard class in any game. The healers are the most fun healing classes of any game. Rather than just rely on mana each class has a unique way to heal or regain mana. a Skilled BMG is a thing of beauty. The Shaman is an amazingly well done class. DSCs are quite unique. The tank classes are all amazing and require more skill to keep aggro than any previous game. They are very well done and diverse, The Monk is a great class. PSI's while arguably broken past 45 are a great and fun class to play. The dungeons are the best since EQ1. If there is any downside here its that the game is now geared towards solo/duo exp rather than encouraging group play.
It depends on your taste whether you like Vanguard or not but its hard to argue that the classes are not diverse or unique.
In regards to MMORPG.com it just simply reflects the opinion of the ignorant masses. SOmetimes they are right somethimes they are wrong. But generally even when they are right they have no idea why they are right. Vanguard is a unique game in that it probably is the most hated game of any recent MMO release. The EQ haters hate it, the ant-SOE people hate it, the PvP players hate it, and many more. The hate is one of the reasons the game has so many hits and so much interest despite its low population.
But the OP is right to a certain extent although I would argue he does not realize why. Vanguard has a great structure. The core elements of the game are amazingly well done. The combat system is great. The pace of combat is wonderful. The oppurunity to seperate oneself with better skill is there. The rescues and counterspelling are great features. All new games should adopt Vanguards defenseive and offensive target sytem with all enemies shown in the queue. I have a hard time playing other games now without a defensive target. Something just seems to be missing. Crafting can be tedious but the core fighting crafting system works very well as does the work order system.
I would disagree with you about Vanguard being a grind. Far from it. While you can grind if you want to you can also solo on quests from 1-50 in about 10-15 days played without ever grinding. I will agree with you about many of the quests being bland or not well done. Like many things in this game they were just thrown in but many quests have been reviewed and somewhat polished and are better now than they were 2 months ago or back in February. But there are also some pretty good quests in the game but I agree the number of good or memorable quests is lacking.
The community in VG has surprised me. With every new games community seeming to be worse my expectations for VG's community were not high. I have not seen the ksing (Heg excluded which btw is just such a poorly designed encounter), disrespect or camp stealing so common in other games. It is the best and most helpful and mature community I have seen in any game since DAOC. Although I have to say it has gotten worse since the server merge. Maybe because more people or the just the good ones leaving as the newer players enter the game.
Vanguard will not appeal to everyone but there are many fantastic things in the game that are much better than anything else on the market. But one has to accept the bad with the good such as SOE's involvement. Vanguard is also a terribly flawed game that is slowly (and i mean slowly) being developed.
The bottomline is Vanguard is a good or very good game for many people but a game that is far from being in a condition that I would call release ready. Sadly it will never be close to the game (especially with SOE in charge) it could have been but many of us are quite happy that it is the game that it is and many of us consider it the best and most fun game on the market. But like anything else that is just an opinion and a minority opinion.
This game failed. Let it die.
I'm getting sick of all those co...ers coming here bitching about a game they never played and talking about their illusion of what they want.
SoE did nothing for VG? New patch was released yesterday, there is no CTD issue anymore, FPS has raised up to 30-60 on recommended specs (2Gb ram, 256MB graphic card (any 7x-8x nvidia) and a 3500+proc. If you don't have this kind of computer nowadays it's not a fault of a game and you shouldnt expect to be able to play games even one year old. Most of the game devs studios are getting payed by NVIDIA to release their games demanding on computer and I'm sure VG is no exception.
Apart from a need to get a strong computer there's nothing you can say is broken in VG. Solo content is there, group content is there, char customiization, crafting, diplomacy, exploration, huge world, tons of races/classes. It's maybe a bit more difficult game (in terms you need to search for things, there are hundreds of things a player must learn to progress).
The game is basically same as EQ2 with non-zoned open world. If you want to try EQ2 think twice if you want a huge open world or a zoned linear world. That's the only real difference between those two games. Besides EQ2 is already been there for 3 years wit tons of addons you need to buy and most of the community is at level cap already with great gear. In VG most of the players are now between levels 15-35.
REALITY CHECK
It's admirable that VG actually survived the river of tears cried by haters tbh.
That's a good sign for me
Ye agreed it's a testement to the game that is still improving at a good pace despite all the negative remarks. And for the people saying they dont add content, read the patch note's this update please! then dont worry no need tp apologise, we know already Keep it up SOE your making a lot of people look silly and that can only be great for the people that like the game
Does anyone else find it funny how many remarks say that this game is the same as any other game? implying that other games are equally as bad, yet they play them and then tell us they are good games?
VG really is a very good game and getting better fast. And, I've played them all ... well, most anyway.
This is a harder core game than many out there, which for me is a plus. As another poster said, it's also a more mature group. After the merge the servers are quite busy.
VG is a fairly complex game. There's a heck of a lot to learn. Personally, I love that. The classes are distinctive, combat is fun, the challenge level is quite good (more difficult than WOW, which I love too), crafting is complex enough to please the real crafters, the diplomacy aspect is insidiously fun, there are far more quests than you would ever do, and the world is gorgeous and huge.
Is it a grind? Well, it does take time. This isn't an instant everything game. If you don't like what you're doing then you'll see it as a grind. If you do enjoy it, as I do, it's simply darn good entertainment.
As others have said, if you don't have a decent computer by today's standards, don't bother. We just can't have games continually designed for 8 year old computers. Most computers being sold today (or in the last year) will do fine, assuming they're not the non-gaming builds you see often.
Yep, there are bugs. I've played with bugs since my first day in an mmorpg many years ago. Play around them until they fix them. It's really no big deal.
It's not going to die because there are enough paying customers and a constant flow of new and returning people. SOE, somewhat to my surprise, is doing a good job with it. Anyway, it's absolutely pointless to root for a game to die. If you don't like it, move on.
Apart from old guildies ofc, I have seen more new players then I have seen old players these last days (I have just recently resubbed after a 1 month break from anything to do with computer at all) with new players I mean that just played a few weeks.
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

thats just... aweful.. why on earth would you say that... i feel bad jsut reading it.. seriously.. Okey Dokey is bad enough... but to combine it with "Sport"... im still baffled. im gonna go cry.
I'm glad to hear the game is getting better, but its a case of too little, too late. It will never reach the potential it could have had.....

If i had a nickel for everytime this paragraph has been written about VG. Shoot i wrote one myself i believe. This is the paragraph of insanity. Like you i thought VG was worth the play time but in the end its not. We try and make it sound good and sound like its worth two cents. Wont be long before you see the light aswell.
I'm glad to hear the game is getting better, but its a case of too little, too late. It will never reach the potential it could have had.....
I dont understand what are you talking about. What potential it could have had. Every game has potential only based on the overstating advertisments before the release. Once it's there it's a game and i don't care about wasted potential or whatever. Its been 9 months now, we shouldnt talk about some wasted potential anymore that was obviously started by the adv campaign before release.
The game is great at the current state. The wasted potential is irrelevant if one finds the game entertaining.
Most of the players are 15-35, not because level 50 would quit, but because they started an alt and the leveling is much slower than in any other game. Even WoW when opened new servers took maybe 10 months to have majority of players at cap level.
The raid content is coming within a month that would please all raid oriented players. For everyone else (roleplayers, crafters, explorers) the content is all there already. Only PVP players are coming short.
REALITY CHECK
Dota wc3 mod is NOT a MMO game. If that's what you're playing now I cannot see how your opinion on current VG state is relevant.
REALITY CHECK
I was recently given this game from a friend that doesn't have the system to run it, so I don't have the same game experience that many others have from playing the game when it was in its original buggy transition. I can say that the game has been a breath of fresh air in many areas.
I played WoW since beta had 3 70's and felt like all I could do to have fun anymore was raid. That eventually turns into a 4 night a week job and quickly loses the fun factor. I tried G&H beta while it was up and was tremendously impressed, but sadly the Trekkies won the war on that one.
I had doubts about VG (played swg from beta to CU) due to it being a Sony product. However since it was free wth. The different aspects of the game make it enjoyable no matter what mood I'm in, and I don't feel like I'm falling behind every minute I'm not logged in.
As far as bugs go, I have limited experience with any other than the normal ones that happen to every game. Yes even 2 years after WoW had been out I was still falling through the world only to die and rez in stone talon mountains.
I'm not trying to convince anyone to stay or buy the game, justt throwin my experience with it into the mix. I am patiently awaiting Aion to come out till then I'll be in VG.
