Eve is a sanbox, not a rollercoaster.

    `nuff said.

It's certainly not for everyone and it's gems are hidden till you start to explore proper teamwork. But yes, if you look at the basic lvl, seeing the interface, doing missions, mining and PVE stuff liek that then yes you are correct, it feels very basic, boring and unimaginative. I can relate to your feeling of being detatched from your character sicne you essentialyl only have a small picture to play with.

Break through that and you'll find it to be the most fun and amazinf ride you've ever done. But again, it's a marmite game; some like it, most don't.

It does take some maturity to enjoy EVE, this one of the things I like most about it, keeps the kids away.

You know why I enjoy this game? The player interaction.

i am kinda in the same boat as the OP. I played swg for 4+ years, and just recently left to go to eq2. In the last year i did try MANY mmos to fill my missing SWG of old, and for me, EvE wasn't it. Not saying it was a bad game, but i did find it pretty boring and impersonal (as a personal preference). I liked in SWG that i was trying to create a persona, a living breathing avatar which was sort of an extension of me. EvE didnt give me that feel.

I know many people like eve, and it is a niche game (unlike WoW .. which is more mainstream, but also wasnt for me), and I whole heartedly endorse anyone who enjoys it to continue playing. No, I wont bash it. every one has different ideas of enjoyment. The economy was really intriguing, and i am  a total space head (Star wars freak here :P ), but i just couldn't get into it, after playing it for almost 4 months.

And before you call me a kiddie, 31yr old with a house, mortgage, kid, etc

Nothing wrong with that. You tried it, you didn't like it. That's ok ofcourse and as you said yourself, you don't bash it... it's just not for you.

The trick to EVE is actually not so much the game itself heh, it's the player interaction (to me at least). If you can't find (or didn't look for) a proper, active, friendly, mature corp then yes it gets boring real pronto. If you're lucky enough to FIND one then it's great.

Your post got me thinking.  I can see why Eve didnt give you that "feel" you got with SWG.  In SWG your "trying to create a persona, a living breathing avatar which was sort of an extension of me."  However, in Eve its flipped.  You are not necessarily creating your own persona and something which is an extension of yourself but rather,  your Corporation and/or Alliance is an extension of its collective members.  Therefore its those Corps and Alliances that act as the persona of its members.  People band together for a common goal and obviously your sence of individualism disappears and you start to get that "just another cog in the wheel" feeling.

That would explain why a lot of veteran Eve players leave these major corps and alliances after years of playing and join smaller corps.  Its like they are trying to get their sence of individualism back.

Heh who knew Eve was so psychological.

eve dose take some  getting used to . . i found with eve if you just sit there go mineing then yes wont enjoy . got to talk with the other players . it the only game ive found where they do help you take time out to to do this .

if your a bash/slash/shoot person then this is not a game for you . what still put me off is the wait times for  skills to be learned . the higher you got could  take a  month to learn some skills . saying that i do keep installing  tyring the 14 day trial . i know if i stick at it im sure it will be a  good game

  • adders666adders666 Member Posts: 259

two months ago i installed the EVE online 14 day trial, and i am still playing, have found a corp and have some decent skills, a nice ship and some cool tech 2 mods, and i can honestly say if you stick with it the game is a gem, the learning curve is fairly large and the death penalties are disgusting (loose all your mods, and any SP over your clone and any implants you had) but i have to say i have had more fun playing eve 2-3 hours a day then i did playing wow 9-10 hours a day for 2 years and how many months, thats the thing about EVE over most mmorpgs, you dont need to spend your life waiting for groups and the like to get loot and experience, you log on change your skills go ratting while talking to corp mates, and then log off and carry on with real life, it also has the best community i have ever seen in an mmo scince pre 8 SWG and original EQ, with EVE-radio.com being fantastic and i love the competitions and the news broadcasts and that :), but as the OP said it is a tad impersonal but if you can get over the fact that you are nothing but a ship then the game is great

Having said that before Eve the company were going to make a game called 3rd World (where you were a character, not just a ship).
If they ever went back to that idea, I might give the game another shot. As it is, I can't stand it.

Check out the idea for 3rd World - totally went down hill.

Actually, what you describe in relation to EVE is 100% accurate.  IF you play it as primarilly a Solo adventurer.  Since the environment of EVE is so large, when you play Solo, you really ARE alone.  And, you really need to be alone; in 0.0 space you really, really, do not want others popping up to say 'hello'.

Now, when you get into the Corp environment and start missioning and hunting with others, it all changes.  EVE is much different than what you think it is when you are no longer going Solo.

You gave no real details, but if you had not been part of a Corp (a good Corp), then that may be what you are missing.  Try again and join up with EVE University for a while.  Then find a good new-player freindly Corp.

    And remember, trust no one.

And never fly anything you cannot afford to lose.

    Good Hunting.

I'd play Earth and Beyond again any day. Much better then EVE in my opinion.

Bring back E&B, develop and expand on it.

Too bad E&B was such a small niche game, couldn't keep itself running. :(

     *edit*

What I'd really like to see is a true skill system in EVE. I'd probably play it if it had a true skill system.

They could even keep the current system, but expand on it. Shorten the wait times for skill advancement, but make it so you actually have to use the skills to advance them.

So, you start with something like Gunnery at level 1, you use your guns for a while and you gain skill for using them. Once you reach the "cap" you can select the skill to train up to the next level like the current system, after the time period is over (shorter then current) you can begin gaining skill by using it again until you reach the "cap" again.

Not quite sure if you have a real good grasp of what EVE skills mean within the game.  Mainly they allow you to use gear and provide boosts (and sometimes debuffs) of your abilities.

The real skill in EVE comes from learning to effectively use the tools that your Skills have allowed you to use.  It is not like EQ or WoW where getting a skill, such as Mind Blast, allows you to use Mind Blast to full effectiveness on any target.

In EVE, you train a Skill such as Small Projectile Turret, that is only the start of the learning process.

         *  Which Small Projectile Turrets can you afford?

         *  Which, and how many, should you mount?

         *  What kind of Ammunition should be loaded?

         *  What range will be optimal for the Load-Out?

         *  How do the selections affect the ship Signature?

         *  How do I fly the ship to maximize these selections?

         *  And much, much more.

The point is that EVE >is< a real skill based system.  But you, the player, are the one that needs to learn the skills.  They will not just be handed to you after you garner so many 'exp points'.

Need to look deeper into EVE for real understanding.

    Good Hunting

    My point exactly.

So instead of wasting my time on EvE since when i play, the goal is to have FUN, i'll actually play "real" economy and stock market and make thousands of dollars + month watching paint dry.

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

This is a lame excuse geeks will revert every time to justify the boring game play of EvE. I'm 32 years old and i've been developping games since my early 20's. I love good PvP, and i certainly adore a game where the economy is run by the players. I also consider myself like a pretty mature and open minded gamer, yet EvE bored me to tears. So this is a moot point to say the least...

Eve used to run like this you know you used to be able for example use the mining laser  to earn skilpoints for the mining laser based skills as an example.

Now the reason this isant so now is that CCP found out how seriously flawed this system really was.

Eve is a game where you have to go out to make it interesting. The game does not come at you with constant changes and a story. I am at a point where no other MMORPG comes close to the depth of this game where the story is the people that play. Some of the drama between corps/people is better then any developer could ever hope to create.

Reminds me of the history of the corp im in, which is written by some of the vets..its a good history-lesson for me. so many names of alliances that were once powerfull, and the only things remained from them is their name and people speaking of it. (moo, ascn..)
And anyone who was in the north when M.Pire surrendered and Mercenary Coalition went home knows what i speak of..

(look in the North. Several things happen throughout eve, but the north is interesting)
    before the war
    after

All that drama that went on in the north..priceless..
