About costs involved

Hi i hear that there is no monthly costs. What I want to know however is whether my family members and i can play simultaneously with only one account. Are there extra charges per character?

Kindly explain in detail.. as play nc support was very unhelpful :)

Just noticed this unanswered post (sadly Guildwars Factions and Nightfall aren’t listed in the main forums page..... at least for me......).

Hopefully you have already been given an answer since this post is a few days old, but in case you’re still waiting

    Quick answers (sort of):

No, you and your family members cannot play on one account.

Yes, there are extra charges per character slot, but you are given 4 character slots with your first Guildwars Chapter (a Chapter being Prophesies, Factions, or Nightfall), and two additional character slots for every other chapter you buy and link with your Guildwars account. In other words, if you buy two chapters, you’ll have 6 character slots total, three chapters and you’ll have 8 character slots total.

Note: Eye of the North is not a chapter, but an expansion and so you will not get any extra character slots.

Note2: If you do not “link” the chapters, you will have more character slots, but your characters will not be able to go into other chapters, nor will they be on the same account. For example, if you bought Factions and Nightfall, and do not link them, you will have 8 character slots, but 4 characters will be stuck in Factions, while the other 4 will be stuck in Nightfall.

Note3: When you purchase all three chapters, you will have a character slot for every profession available in Guildwars minus one. There are 9 professions total and you’ll have 8 character slots. So if you want a character slot for each profession, you will need to purchase an addition character slot for (currently) $10.

Note4: If you do buy additional character slots from the in-game store (only way possible currently) then you should also know that if you spend a total of $30 (doesn’t have to be all at once) from now till the end of October, you’ll get the free Bonus Mission Pack added to your account in November when it is released.

A little further explanation for why you cannot play different characters on one account:

First, I’m not too familiar with any MMO that would allow different characters on the same account to be played simultaneously, but it’s not like I know every MMO out there or even close to it.

Next, I had typed up a very, very long description of things like the Guildwars business model to further explain the lack of simultaneous character play from one account, but then I realized most of it was pointless as long as you understand that Guildwars (or the creators, ANet) need your money to help pay the server-fees. And in order for them to get that money without charging you a monthly fee, they need a lot of people to buy their game. So it helps ANet to get more money by not allowing people and their friends/family members to play simultaneously on one account, since the friends/family would have to buy their own game and account if they want to play with each other.

Yah, it sucks, but in my opinion, it is better than paying a monthly fee.
