Trying the trial any advice?

chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

Ok I was never going to play this game but since I get a few days free wandering about I thought I might as well.  To try and really give this game a go can anyone give me some advice when starting out?  Or at least what I should be looking out for to see what the game has to offer.

My verdict is coming beware

I've played LotRo since a week before release. My main level 42 character (just achieved this week) .

My first impression of the game has stuck with me throughout the entire time i've played up until level 42, and that first impression was put to the test throughout my entire leveling campaign. I'm here to provide my first-impression thoughts along with the conclusion of that first impression.

The classes are all great fun! I've tried each class up to at least level 15 and enjoyed every one of them.

The quests are fun and relaxing! I've enjoyed almost every quest. They're spaced nicely so just when you get sick of kill quests you often get fellowship, escort or other quests that provide a nice even break. And when you get sick of them, you'll get something else that provides that break.

The crafting is fun and seems well balanced. It's semi-difficult to grand-master a profession and it should be.I've always been a fan lots and lots of weapons and armors. This game definately has the appeal for that fetish.

I love most every aspect of LotRo. The quests are great fun, the weapons and armor are plentiful (although i can never get enough, so keep adding more!), and the classes are all great fun!

The zones could use some more "seperation" of enemies though. At least hopefully in future zones, some of the prior enemies like the "Wolves, bears, boars, and wargs" can either be made significantly different so it feels like I'm fighting a different type of enemy, or just left out altogether.

But the best thing in this game are the Dungeons, thats what truly the best part, but in a 7 day trail i doubth you will experiance any.

    Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.
Tried: Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.

my advice is ignore the forum trolls.

this place is lousy with them, you would be lucky to get a balanced opinion anywhere on this entire site.

On the trial, you wont be able to trade with other players (to avoid muleing?) so dont expect to progress in crafting vocations that require mats from other people.

Only done the Man startup myself, all seemed pretty straightforward, would have made it to level 20 if I could have played the entire 7 day period.

with choosable quest rewards, if neither choice is any use to you, pick the most expensive and sell it

ask for help if you need it, the game has a looking for team(fellowship) function.. only needed to team up a couple of times..

but - its a trial - use it to see what you think of the game yourself.

Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.
    Now .. Go away.

My advice have fun. The Hobbits starting area is very nice looking, graphically, and has some great content. The Shire is one of the best places to start.

Play for more than a couple hours to get the hang of it. The biggest complaint about the game is that it is similar in style to EQ, AC, WOW and the other MMOs. However LOTRO is adding a lot of stuff every other month and housing is being added. It also has amazing graphics and very interesting storyline. So read  your quests.

    Thanks guys...

I have played the game for about 1 day now and up to level 8.  Playing elf hunter.

    My verdict so far:

    Plus's

    * I like the fact that they have put in some effort to make a storyline and really enjoyed teaming up with a dwarf npc and fighting through a dungeon.

    * The combat is not as manic or quick as Vanguard.  At first I didn't like it but now I prefer it as it gives you a chance to change attack.

    * I like the fact I could jump in and play almost straight away.  Its very simple to pick up and even getting missions was intuitive.

    * no bugs to see and performance is fine on max settings.

    Negative's

    * The game does feel slightly linear.  Most other mmo's I played and VG to a large extent were all very open and I had the sense I could get lost.  LOTR has that illusion but almost every place I go its pretty obvious all paths lead to 1-2 destinations.

    * Graghics: I hear people say its amazing.  Its OK, well its good enough.  Maybe its the trial but I am running at max settings and besides the character looking very cool the scenery is a little cartoonish.

    * The gameplay felt like D&D online but a much more improved.  I personally didn't like D&D

In summary I am glad I am playing the trial.  I can see why people love the game and it is pretty addictive.  Personally I prefer a free roaming style gameplay and not so directed but in some ways it was a nice change to follow a storyline and not stand around saying 'what now?'.

Will play out the week and lets see how it goes!

Hmm..Does the trial only give you that low-rez client? I'm no fan of LOTRO, but on max settings I found many of the lanscapes and water effects simply stunning at times.

MMOs are boring, or LOTRO is boring? Seems odd to be a registered member of a site dedicated to MMOs if you hate them doesn't it?

Well, since your level 8, not sure if you've left the elf starter areas much...if not...take the nearest horse to Bree and explore the town.... be sure to give Monsterplay  a try while your there (once you get to level 10).  Also, spend a bit of time in the Shire....also a remarkable looking zone.....

Ya, the start areas are very linear, but it gets bigger as you hit like Bree and have to do some quests around there, I bought this game not expecting much, but I really enjoy this game so far even though I'm only like level 17. i really enjoy the epic quests and the storyline of the game.

  • chryseschryses Member UncommonPosts: 1,453

Ya it has to be the trial.  I just checked out some screenshots and it really looks different.  So apologees for any new players out there that may be put off by my comments.

I am out of the elf starting area and its a little better.  I appreciate that the grind isn't well....so grinding!  I don't mind killing 6 creatures for skins etc.  As I mentioned before I am glad they put some effort into the storyline.

I am not sure if you can but is there a sprint option?  If you are losing a battle its slightly like a bad dream where you are running slowly and you can't get away.

    I know that feeling.

There is no 'sprint' button, but I do know that Captains eventually get a group sprint that lasts like 20 seconds.  Everyone else has to know how much abuse they can handle before electing to leg it and have enough morale to survive the beating the mobs give you until you escape their 'patrol zone'.

dont know Hunters, but had the idea that they had a run buff of their own.. or is that purely out of combat ?

Also beleive they have some variant of the classic "pinning" arrow, that slows down the target.

Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.

Thanks for all your comments guys.  I just finished the trial and due to real life reasons I could only get to level 10.  Here is my 1 week verdict....

    What I liked a lot::

    - Noob friendly and its nice to be able to jump straight in.

    - Graghics is nice and I had zero lag or glitches. (the updates did take ages at the start)

    - Hunter class is fun and having range weapons actually felt worth while rather than a 1 shot attack before melee.  Similar system to most mmo's but enough difference to make it fun.

    - As a PvP fanatic I didn't really miss that element.  The game does have a lot of work on the storyline front so I didn't feel like, 'Oh I have to grind to get weapon to kill people.' I was actually enjoying the missions and getting into the story.

    - Its very much a real RPG and has a real life D&D feel to it.

    - Definitely casual gamer friendly.

    - Deeds and titles.

    What I didn't like:

    - The world does look good but I did feel it was a little linear and I prefer to explore.  However this does fall into the casual friendly environment and it was fine not to get lost for a change.

    - Running away.  I did get annoyed when I accidentaly pulled 2 creatures and since you can't press sprint and bolt I had to sit and wait for them to kill me.  I did get away once because I jumped off a cliff.

    - Ok I said I didn't mind the PvE only element (I know there is Monster combat) and I think over time this would annoy me.  However the game really isn't set up for it.

    Summary:

I am really glad I played the trial.  It changed my idea of the game and I can understand why people love it.  I was seriously thinking about signing up even for 3 months because I would like to continue some quests but I just don't have the time.  I would recommend this game to players who are new to MMO's as it really does give a great introduction.  Also to veteran mmo players looking for a good looking stable game but on a casual basis.

so what you're saying is that its for 1st time mmo players or noobs. its linear as in you go here do this and then you go there do that and it has zero pvp. that pretty much falls in line with most peoples views i'd say.... well outside of the 175k people that play it of course.

Materva26 clearly ended up on the wrong website while trying to look up pornography while his parents were out of the house.

Anyways, I think LotRO is a good MMO for those who are casual MMO players.  It is a light-hearted, easy to play game.  I prefer more challenging, hard-core games, but to each his own.  The graphics are, IMO, amazing.  I just don't prefer the gameplay because I like more sandbox type games where I'm not forced to follow along a certain path.  I've heard the end game (i.e. after you completely level your character) can get pretty boring from friends who have maxed out at 50.  However, I think this is typically the case with most level based games.  If you end up enjoying the trial than I'd say go for it!

     Pretty much.

I was considering it only because I wanted a break from the big black of EVE.  However I figured after 1 month I would be get a little frustrated with my concerns above.  However I can understand why people love it.

Out of all of the classes I think that the Burglar is easily the best one for soloing.

    I've only been playing a month or so but I have a level 31 burg a level 21 Hunter a level 21 champ, a level 20 guardian and a level 10 minst.

Out of all of them the champion is the hardest to solo IMO

LOL HAHA hehe LOL lmao !!! YOU got to be kidding right. Wow I'm damn glad i un-installed the game before I actually tried it.

I'm all for restirction in trials but to make it impossible to even try crafting seems pretty dumb IMO. I've known people who only play for crafting so I guess they can go to hell when it comes TO LOTRO i guess huh.

They where on disability hence could not handle the stress of intense combat.

The have both available for download.  It would be interesting to know which one he chose.  The Hi-Res client is about 1.5 GB larger in size, so I'm guessing a lot of people choose the smaller one.

Very nice, fair, and balanced summary.  You did a good job of explaining why you found some areas fun and others not so fun for you.  That's all any MMO can ask of  a player... give them a chance.  If you've decided that's it's not for you, no biggie... we are all going to have different tastes.  Glad you had fun and tried it out.
