This game isn't very good.
Yes, L2 has great graphics and their character models are generally very cool looking.
But it has some serious flaws:
1) no invert mouse option -- c'mon! there's NO excuse for this. Sure I could get used to it, but it takes a second to add!
2) I run... so... so... slow... -- Maybe i'm just used to CoH, but it's real annoying when it takes me 15 minutes to walk across a tiny -dead- town
3) NO options for personalizing your character model -- the 2 choices for hair and faces are not even different, geez... just give us a few different hair colors even if you're too lazy to draw a few different faces. And no option to have different skin tones??
4) The lag is horrible -- i know i don't have the best computer, but for every 5 minutes of ok gameplay i get, i have to deal with 5 minutes of horrible lag. ugh!
All in all, I don't really enjoy this game. I know i didn't give it much time, but it's so painful to play that I can't imagine getting to higher levels. I'm going to return the game asap.
My advice to gamers: Play City of Heroes or Ragnarok instead!
My advice to NCSoft: Stop funding L2 quickly, I predict it'll be essentially dead by christmas. Put all your funding into CoH, and make sure every new game you release has at least some of CoH's control scheme, customization, and liveliness.

There's a little thing called armor. and if you put it together, 5 races, 2 faces each, 2 hairstyles each, 2 haircolors each.
this is without the armor , 32768 combinations without the armor....
oh no wait, you can't cross races,

In ALL fantasy orcs and dwarfs run slow..why don't you try an elf, dark elf, or human then?

are you one of that 2% gamer population that uses invert mouse controls? that's why ubisoft has it on every freaking game.

Yes, armor does allow to change your appearance. Although to be competitive you have to choose the best armor available to you, which effectively limits your choices... (but this is a problem with most games)... But still - considering the amount of time spent on all the other models and textures, why would they only make 2 faces?? 2 faces that are only different if you look really close! In order for me to have a certain fondness for my character, I have to at least look original.
As a side note, it's hard for me to enjoy playing a character that runs as if he's falling over (dark elf), or has to wear a skirt and g-string (orc wizard with tights), or sounds exactly like a little girl (human wizard). :-P
Yes, I guess I am part of the minority with my invert-mouse controls... Maybe I used a joystick too much as a lad.

I heard this game is boring till level20... and its really slow and boring till then. True?
I played L2 beta and when I hit 20 was when I stopped playing.
I put sooo much effort into the grind from 15-20 so that I could do the jobchange and become a Dark Wizard, because I heard about how much better the game gets past 20.
So I became a Dark Wizard, and all I got out of it was.. a new nuke spell, if I remember correctly. Woww, amazing. At that point I was so let down that I had no motivation to grind anymore, and stopped altogether. I met some nice people on L2, it's the only MMOG so far that I have enjoyed soloing, the !shout chat was an awesome feature that every game should have ( or at least, every game's players should use it as a chatbox the way it was in L2 beta ), I loved the camera and movement, but all in all it is a level/gold/skill point grind with pretty graphics.

Back on topic, this game is terrible. Murt, you said there is customization, eh? Did you pull that 32,000 or so number from what you are sitting on right now? There are six hairstyles (on average), two faces, and 2 classes. Armor doesn't add anything. The only thing armor changes is "Oh my twin is wearing shorter pants than me." Give me a break. I see so many people who look exactly like me (well, my friend's character) it isn't funny. Sometimes I think there are no recessive genes in the Dark Elf DNA.
Or it could be argued that Dark Elves do have reccesive genes as that would explain the actions of a lot of the people in game...
I did both open Korean Beta and the Closed North American beta.
I was playing the korean beta and was starting to get pissed at the level grind. I knew that there were quests but I couldnt read the dialogue. I liked the look and feel of the game alot and got excited that the with the NA beta/release I would have alot of fun with quests and such.
Then I was pleasently surprised when I got into the closed beta over here. However I booted it up again, same old thing but now I can read what characters are saying. I was eager to get my first quest but when I did I was less than saisfied. With the annoying level grind I was hoping that the quests would be fun and entertaining... no such luck "kill monster X and get X of item X."
Then I got FFXI, now im happy even though L2 is a beautiful game the eye candy loses its flair after awhile. Im not gonna plug FFXI but I can say that L2 would be runner up if someone assured me that it gets more interesting at later levels.
Since I don't play anything right now, I log on to my friend's 56 (I just got him from 87%-100% before coming here) Spellhowler now and then. It doesn't get better. Arena is the most boring place in the world and unless you are in the top guild in the land wars and Castle Sieges are non-existant.

thou the quests could use some more thought
the only thing i really dislike is down time between the monsters when u start an new charater without any Mp potions otherwise i like it. thou im only lvl 14 right now
Yes, the game really isn't very good. Cancelled my account. Played an Abyss Walker (DE Dagger) on Bartz. Quests are boring and anything but imaginative. XP is a grind worse then EQ and gets worse and worse as you level up past 40. L2 was touted as a PvP game but that is pretty much BS. It is a PvE game with HIGHLY controlled aspects of PvP. Karma system just doesn't work for many reasons. Has a ton of issues with risk/reward system. Farming bots have been a big problem. This is mainly chinese farmers that are running macros to farm cash and items to sell on ebay and sometimes take over entire hunting areas and prime dungeon spots. The L2 gaming community is the worse I have ever seen and you need look no further then their message boards to see what I mean. I am guessing 80+% of the current L2 players will jump ship once WoW, EQ2 and DarkFall come out.
i just handed out about a 10000 "i told you so" towards the people who actually pre ordered this game.
Alot of dissapointed customers.
