i played from beta till 2 months ago and here is what i find bad about this game: NO SOCIAL ASPECTS.
Erm what? if there is anything that sets Lotro apart from other mmo's it is the SOCIAL ASPECTS...
Its Role playing heaven, player music, Characters ,Sesionplay, And Things that are comming soon are Housing , Fishing, and Barbers and much more.
[Sarcasm]Isnt "Social Aspect" being in an guild of poeple you do not know and to quest once in a while?[/sarcasm]
No
LOL....
The facts are LOTRO has as many social aspects as any other MMO...so, this is nothing new. Roleplaying is not huge on their servers (even on Landroval, which was designated Roleplay...but no one did it..)..I saw more RP in WoW, than I ever did in LOTRO...
I agree the housing looks cool, and can't wait to see how it is implemented...as this sounds great, so no qualms with that statement...
Fishing will be great...but should have been in for open...so many people clamored for it in Closed Beta, and during Dev chats the Devs made fun of it as well, like they were so sick of hearing about it...good way to treat the fans...
EQ2 has had visual customization, so this is nothing new having a barber...but, I will wait to see how it is implemented...for example, if the styles are unique and different than the initial selection (which is quite limited to begin with) then I will be impressed...
Player music has been quite sad...I would see maybe one or two people doing this...it just did not take off..whether it is being used more nowadays, i do not know...but, it was far and between...and of course, nothing was more fun than mapping back to Bree, to have a budding musician (read: Crappy) standing by the stone plunking away and having it blare through my speakers...
So, all games have socail aspects...and it makes me wonder if you have played any other MMO sandage, as it sounds like your enamored of these features that other games have also...
That's a scream of frustration right there. Here's the problem with this thread; That game you have loved for years and called your own that is either dying or not as popular as it once was, IS NOT LOTRO!
It's not EQ2, it's not Ryzom, it's not WoW, it may borrow from those games in obvious ways, but the package is it's own. Yes you are hand held and taking through the quests and stories, that's part of the intended game play, the music system is used often I see musicians all the time, not as often as after launch but that's not surprising either.
It's a casual game, hence the easy leveling and crafting system, that's how it is, it's not a joke, it's exactly what it's supposed to be. Social aspects of the game are different then Ryzom, no people don't hang in front of a mektoub and shoot the crap while crafting, but there are events and people do role play but if you're not in a role playing guild and not sure where to find role players you won't see them very easily. That's also true of Ryzom and EQ2 in my experience.

You sould stop judgeing games that you dont even play, and only played "half" , i sugest you check out http://www.landroval.org/ and try aigan, or stop claiming things that are untreu...Landroval is a great (unofficial) RP server and lots of events created there for Roleplaying.
Playing:World of Warcraft. Played:Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies. Tried:Starwars the Old Republic, Everquest 2, Guild Wars, Vanguard, Age of Conan, Aion.

Wait, so since the Boston Globe said their are 800k subs in LOTRO, it also must be right..

Thank you for the heads up...
Well no mather what I or anyone says to you , its no point i gess, i never said that all the people on Landroval Rp's, what im saying is that there are a lot of RP activities , but aigan if you dont look for it it wont come to you if your not trying or playing it, same thing as you had the problems whit looking for groups, but i can see you can look up newsarticals prety well, what im getting tired of is to listen to somone that says a thousand time how bad the game is, that does not even plays it, but thats probbly your idea of having fun i gess.

Thank you developers, thank you so much for giving me the chance to try the free 7-day trial so that I can see that this game don't have any words from M M O R P G in it except game (and this is questionable too, because game suppose to be fun and entertaining). Lets be real, anyone who enjoy playing on-line games CAN'T be satisfied with this game, even Tolkien fans CAN'T be satisfied so I m trying to figure it out who is actually playing this game??? 1. Quest system - quest and quest are the quest of the quest and all i can quest is the quest of my mother quest. When i quest in this game I feel quest and quest and all the world is one big quest. When I want to talk about the quest i just want to say that quest is the quest of all the quests (jesus was probably in some kind of a quest). I think I don't need to elaborate this point. 2. Crafting - haha. This is not crafting, this is stupidity and lack of creativity. Grind x 10^234982. When I want to try other vocations, haha, i somehow forgot 12000 hours of grinding and don't know anymore how to seed the plant (i think this is joke and they are probably changing it in next patch, or... in next patch we could have recipe for farting: blackfart recipe, silentfart recipe, bean eating recipe OMG). 3. Did I mention that when you fail the quest and npc dies you can just try again, and try again lol, the npc resurrect and everything is fine (this Gandalf is great magician huh?). I m asking myself if any of "developers" actually played Fallout or Planescape: Torment or similar games, because when I put a bullet in Sulik's head - that's it, no more Sulik for me. 4. Maybe I m spoiled because I m coming from Ryzom but this quest system (oh my god I said that word again) kills the interaction between players alot. There is no point in talking with others players until i need something because everything is driven, why?? Can there be a lil bit less of that stupidly deterministic linearity. For whom developers are making games?? This suppose to be MMO so... I don't even bother saying about other "omygodssocoolstuff" like combat maneouvres, class system haha, traits (master of farts), and so on. Only thing that I actually like in this game is the graphic, and this is the saddest thing, because if this game had a lil bit worsier graphics anyone wouldn't even bother to try it. And music. This is such a great idea and unfortunately is only thing that is non linear as in all the arts. After all, I need to say that it would be much better to spend money in something that's usefull to a wider community then in retard game development. We could have better health care, cleaner air, maybe after some time even better online games haha etc... Lots of guilt are also on players who are sheeps and just eat thats marketing BS (just look on the home page of the mmorpg.com). We really need good RPG on-line game and not this jokes that we are having now. Uh I think that's it. Any comments?
I played SoR for almost 2 years pre outpost. What are you talking about ??? Crafting is grind ? Did you ever craft in SoR ? LOL. Or have you been in one of the mighty guilds with an endless flow of XP flowers? Hey, i am a LOTRO noob, but i know you can buy XP boosters with your destiny points :P
Oh.. and how did you gain skills in SoR ? There was no grind ? Absoluetly no grind ? Hahaha.... even with boosters you stood on a hill for hours and blasted plants and animals. Or did they boost the boosters ? LOL
Quests...hmm you dont have to do them. Go hunt and do only the epic ones whenever you feel like doing one. I know.. its hard when you come from the "real thing" SoR community.
When you die you can retry again in LOTRO ? LOL, in SoR there is no dead at all. And if you really fall into coma you just get revived by your gods and can run back and try again ! Big difference :P
Well, i have been there and done that. Cant really bash you for silly trolling. You are on cold SoR turky. Good luck on adapting to something else. Hey... doing quests in EQ2 helped me to get over it
lol another noob who got too comfortable with Ryzom...
let me remind you that Ryzom is not the best game ever made and it does or did not nearly have as much players as LOTRO, seven days is not enough to experience the entire game and if you decide to make such pointless threads about every game then you deserve nothing less than banning so the fans dont have to hear this nonsense, Ryzom died too bad! i heard it was a decent game but it certainly didnt make enough money to keep it going!!
and if you hate quests, then it elmininates like 90% of the good games and all your left with are grind for lvls like Metin2 which im sure you wont like

Bashing another game just to elevate another or others isn't exactly condusive...
Ryzom is an excellent game that lacked certain key elements to keep it healthy and it's quite sad, I hope small comapnies are learning from them.

Thank you for the heads up...
You know its sad. You contiune to go on the LOTRO forums yet you hate the game. I am unsure if you ever played it. What MMO are you playing now? Maybe I will go on that forum and just bash it on every post. No MMO is perfect. If you don't like the game fine whine about it. However don't contiune to whine about it weeks and weeks after. Hell you hate it you get one post to complain after that go somewhere else.
im not bashing Ryzom.. its a decent game and I wanted to try it before it went down the tubes, but tell that to the OP bashing a big game
I found Ryzom to be boring with a horrible community. I tried very hard to like it and it looks alright but honestly its one of the worst MMOs out there.
Uhh too much posts to reply to so I will try to be more precise about my thoughts.
First let we clear something. I wasn't ranting or trolling and I don't know why several of you ppl going with this argument all over. This is my opinion of the LOTRO and clearly if I registered on MMORPG.com forums I somehow think i have right to express my opinion here. After all that is the one of purpose of this forums, and if you don't think that's ok ... than you have a problem.
One more thing that is really bad, I mean realy bad is the pushing on my or anyones english. Clearly my english is not good because is not my native language, but I m trying to make myself as clear as possible while you're trying to push and insult about how crippled I am becasue of my bad english. You are not good person and I will not even try to reply on your posts although I respect your opinion.
So back on LOTRO. Before I downloaded this game I read about it, browsing through official site and some forums so I knew what I will get. Completely quest driven, multiplay on-line adventure in middle earth with no PvP in the main game. Although I'm not a big fan of such type of on-line games I wanted to see what is the feeling of the LOTRO's middle earth and was asking myself, could I enjoy the game occasionally (after all I was also inspired a lot by Tolkien's books and lore). And what to say? I was dissapointed. And mostly on the things that I mentioned in my first post. In my opinion the game just lacks some core components that on line games should have and that i found in for ex. EVE or Ryzom (yes Ryzom) or although it's still not released Darkfall.
I knew from the start that LOTRO will not be like these games, but I was hoping for at least not so much linearity, better AI of the mobs (why all badgers insist on threaten me haha), better crafting and so on. Come on people you re having recipe for seed of onion and cabbage?? So to get mastery in first tier i need to plant 2 square km of onions, and you call that crafting. This is insult for mine and your brains too, you know. Please stop telling me how in later lvls I will be able to craft "Sting" and all my fellowship will wield one. This is just stupid, of course that's only my opinion, if you find cabbage planting a crafting who am I to stop you. If that person Imrodus that posted few posts above want to pay 40 $ + 15 $ monthly for cabbage planting who am I to stop him. From what he says it seems that I need to try every game on this site (buying game and paying subscription for at least 3 moths) to be able to judge it if it's worth my bucks. Thats why I think that free 7 days trial are great thing. I tried EVE, liked it, playing it. I tried Ryzom, liked it, was playing it (and hopefully will continue). I tried LOTRO, don't liked it, will not play it. It's really that simple. More on this, I think someone should protect the customers even more and make it inevitable that every MMORPG developer need to have 7 or 14 day trial. You will experience fast ascending of the MMORPG quality on the market.
Again few posts above Eugam person made remark about Ryzom crafting which in colaboration with harvesting is one of the best harvest-craft system I ever experienced in game. Let we make something clear, most of the time in MMORPGs is grinding. Its really depends on the setting, game mechanics, economy and so on if that grinding will be fun (there is no point in having to craft 1000 of different items if the system dont involve my brain and everything is the same). There is one big difference in Ryzom that you actually feel as a part of that living planet Atys, there is a ecosystem out there and regarding lore, story and RP you're actually spending the big part of your game finding better spots to harvest and better items to craft solo or in team.
Which leads us to a social aspect of the MMORPGs. If you say that LOTRO have strong social aspect and a lot of RP moments you should see the chat channels on the Laurelin server. Most of the chatting is LFF looking for someone to kill someone or OOC. Got for my first time in Bree, found like 30 characters in front of the Prancing pony and ... silence, no music, no chit chat, no disscussions, no bows, I said wtf. Is that middle earth I knew from the Tolkien lore? Nope it isn't and thats why I will not play it.
Uhh too long, if it's me I wouldn't even read such a long post LOL. But here it is. Straight from the bottom of my heart. Everything is evolving and my opinion is that MMORPGs need to evolve too. I hate when I see that marketing banners are selling the games, the quality of game and good gameplay should sell them, not the numbers. Devs, If you can't make such a games then stop telling us how inovative, revolutionary and remarkable are new games, just tell us that your games is a joke not true MMORPG and be honest, at least ppl will believe you in future.
I waited 4 years for lotro, and when I played the beta, I couldn't force myself to play for more than 4 days. I know that I didnt get to experience even half of the game, but it sucked so so so much, it was too much to bare.
As some1 said, even those who dont like the game like myself, should recognize that the gfx are very good. They just are
OP, about farming. This is an important part of the lore. Lots of people (specially hobbit lovers I would say), like it; and it is great that it got in-game.
I don't like Quest concentrated MMORPGs; so I knew lotro would never offer the dynamic experience I would love to. But I was expecting that (being a quest drive game) it would excell in the quest system and lore.
And it wasnt.... Most of the quests were uninteresting; childishly written; and there were quite some lore problems/errors. After being fed up for years about how the lore was being respected; how you would immerse in the game, etc, it was such a let down to see so many blunt mistakes.
And again, the childish way quests are written and the story unfolds, does not enable me to immerse in the game; or feel like I'm really in middle earth.

This is an interesting take...can you maybe explain how the lore affected your decision? Did it detract so much from the original storyline?
If one thing was right in this game...it was the lore...the quests were less than satisfying sometimes...but there is no doubt, the feel of the story felt right...
But, you seemed to not see it that way, and I am interested in what you saw that made you feel this way
Well, coming from MUD's..... I'd say MOST MMO's rate pretty poorly in the RP department. I'd say RP in LOTRO rated at the high end of the scale for MMO's as far as my experince goes. I think that can probably be attributed to the player demographics as LOTRO seems to cater to a somewhat more mature audience, and those tend to have a higher percentage of players that are interested in RP or at least tolerant of it.
The commenter who said that you have to make some effort to go out and find other RP'ers is right though. I'm in an RP oriented kinship on Elendilmir and I know there are plenty of other RP kins on that server as well as individual RP'ers. But if your just wandering around and not actively looking for RP it's pretty hit or miss whether you'll bump into it. It's not like alot of MUD's where the whole game is centered around RP and everyone does it.
Particulary in the lower level areas RP can be hard to find.... as many players there are new to online games in general... let alone rp-ing.... and even RP'ers tend to be a little more focused on learning the mechanics of the game before they slip too heavly into RP. But if you go looking for it, you CAN find plenty of good RP. I think the key there is to find an RP kin to game with. Also, do yourself a favor and turn off the OOC and Trade chat channels... it'll save you alot of greif.
Also remember, it's not a wide open sandbox game. There is alot of leeway to RP different character types...... but there is Lore out there...... that should act as a very general set of guidelines to stay within.
In other words, there are some very broad limits that you'll have to fit your RP into. If you want to RP a fireball throwing hobbit vampire from the planet Krypton... LOTRO will NOT be the game for you.
hmm now im getting tired of hearing that LOTRO sucks.... it doesn't! seriously.. well apart from getting from lvl 40´to 50 is pure hell if you don't play a lot.
i stopped since i got sick of questing all the time... now im back and enoying it to the bitter end!
bad graphic? omg take a look at WoW now that is seriously bad... it even makes me more sick than questing in LOTRO!
crafting is borring But isn't it always that? you earn a lot of gold once you get grandmaster tailor* for an example.. once you have that you can make crits on items which make them more than double expensive cause they give better stats unlike wow... plain sucky crafting system! -.-'
and with all the new content yet to come.. the is not even 5% of the way towards the end.. unlike wow.... they have to make a lot of new (out of story.. i think) content just because Nihilum is tired of TBC.. wtf ? lose more thab 10k subscribers just to satisfy that guild? wOOt!!
heard bad stuff about LOTRO? well give it a shot and you may think different don't listen to other ppl and then judge the game that is just the most silly thing ever
a lot of what you mentioned occur in almost EVERY MMO on the market.
I agree...and until Morrowind is made into an MMO, we will always follow some path...all games have them...man I would kill for the Oblivion system in an MMO..
To the OP, you've stated that you already knew ahead of time that this game wasn't going to be what you were looking for, but you think there's too much of the things you don't like?
I don't understand this, I played Ryzom and stopped because there wasn't enough linear components, yes I actually like this from time to time as well as open ended content.. But I realize that Ryzom isn't about linear.. It's the same with LotrO it's all about following the story, so yes it's going to be very linear and lead you into a series of steps.
Again there is NO RP in the main chat, you can't just stand there and 'hear' people chat in character unless there's an event of some kind. There's still plenty of people role playing, but they're doing it in guild chat or fellow chat ect.. There's reasons for this.. ^_^
Though I understand your concerns I think your opening statement in your original post didn't give the best impression for constructive replies, hence why maybe people didn't take it too seriously.
Again few posts above Eugam person made remark about Ryzom crafting which in colaboration with harvesting is one of the best harvest-craft system I ever experienced in game. I loved the crafting in Ryzom (and a few other parts of the game). It is stats based and gives you room to discover. It took crafters 15 month to find the "perfect" recipe for amps. I also liked the prospecting part of harvesting. I wished one of the new big worlds like vanguard or even lotro would have something like prospecting. Much better to search for a larger mine and deplete it then to run around and collect stuff.
I miss the ecosystem of Atys too. Real seasons and mitigating herds. I also miss the seasonal spawns of rare raws. Those where the good things of SoR other games could have learned from..
I left Ryzom when outposts and faction where introduced. And looking back i am glad about it. The Karavan vs Kami conflict didnt do any good to the game. The outposts divided the great community into haves and not-haves and killed a lot of old friendships due to racial conflicts. They better should have stick to their lore and introduce real goo mechanics... As i heared one faction finally won all outposts. Game over now ?
However, you are in the same boat like many others here on the forum. We want a sandbox-ish game with depth. But we dont get one. There is almost no hope left. So you better try to adapt to the questdriven games if you want to play mmo. Lotro has a vital roleplaycommunity... that helps a lot.
Ahh well, you know, if you don't like quests and the sometimes unrealistic nature of how they unfold, then yeah, LotRO sucks.
But LotRO is a story driven, quest driven game. It is meant to be this way. It is not meant to be like Saga of Ryzom.
As far as socializing, to blame a supposed lack of it on the fact that this is a quest based game is ludicrous. People are social but maybe you just didn't spend enough time in the game to find out.
I enjoy playing on-line games. I've been doing so for close to ten years now. I also enjoy and am satisfied with LotRO. I accept it for the kind of game it is, not the kind of game I want it to be.
As for your Ryzom, as unique and interesting as it is, tell me why it is on the verge of shutting down? With all its supposed greatness, why has it struggled to gain an audience? I'll tell you why. Not many people like pure sandbox games. The game is somewhat of a deception. Starter Island is crowded but once one pays for a subscription and goes to the mainland, they realize that they are all alone.
In the future, the only successful sandbox game will be the kind that also offers a questing system. You just can't make a giant world and expect people to "figure" out what to do. They want a world that is alive and questing is a very good way of relating that aliveness. I'm not saying it is the only way but many people look at games like they look at a book or a film and they want to follow a story, be part of a bigger picture.
Why can't the OP be more of a dynamic game player? Why can't he appreciate LotRO for what it is and also play and enjoy Ryzom for what it is? I find it disturbing the lack of variety many gamers impose on themselves. Really, chill out and learn to play more.

You sould stop judgeing games that you dont even play, and only played "half" , i sugest you check out http://www.landroval.org/ and try aigan, or stop claiming things that are untreu...Landroval is a great (unofficial) RP server and lots of events created there for Roleplaying.
I am sorry...your right...because that website says so, all people on Landroval roleplay..WoW...you got me..
Wait, so since the Boston Globe said their are 800k subs in LOTRO, it also must be right..
Or, have you read this?

(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
im not bashing Ryzom.. its a decent game and I wanted to try it before it went down the tubes,
but tell that to the OP bashing a big game

You know its sad. You contiune to go on the LOTRO forums yet you hate the game. I am unsure if you ever played it. What MMO are you playing now? Maybe I will go on that forum and just bash it on every post. No MMO is perfect. If you don't like the game fine whine about it. However don't contiune to whine about it weeks and weeks after. Hell you hate it you get one post to complain after that go somewhere else.
Uh I think that's it. Any comments?

Read my "funny" DF1 blog: http://casualdarkfall.blogspot.com
If one thing was right in this game...it was the lore...the quests were less than satisfying sometimes...but there is no doubt, the feel of the story felt right...
But, you seemed to not see it that way, and I am interested in what you saw that made you feel this way
Thank you
Well, coming from MUD's.....
One Comment.
What?
hmm now im getting tired of hearing that LOTRO sucks.... it doesn't! seriously.. well apart from getting from lvl 40´to 50 is pure hell if you don't play a lot.
i stopped since i got sick of questing all the time... now im back and enoying it to the bitter end!
bad graphic? omg take a look at WoW now that is seriously bad... it even makes me more sick than questing in LOTRO!
crafting is borring But isn't it always that? you earn a lot of gold once you get grandmaster tailor* for an example.. once you have that you can make crits on items which make them more than double expensive cause they give better stats unlike wow... plain sucky crafting system! -.-'
and with all the new content yet to come.. the is not even 5% of the way towards the end.. unlike wow.... they have to make a lot of new (out of story.. i think) content just because Nihilum is tired of TBC.. wtf ? lose more thab 10k subscribers just to satisfy that guild? wOOt!!
heard bad stuff about LOTRO? well give it a shot and you may think different don't listen to other ppl and then judge the game that is just the most silly thing ever
I mainly agree with the statement that LotRO is too linear. It plays like a children's game, for the most part.
AC (retired); EQ (retired); DAoC (retired); Horizons (retired); EQII (retired); CoH (retired); AC II (tested); Lineage II (beta); Neocron (tested); Saga of Ryzom (beta); SWG (retired)...
a lot of what you mentioned occur in almost EVERY MMO on the market.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Cheers!
(,,,)=^__^=(,,,)
Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.
