Stupid

From what I read of this game, people that play SL are really sad.  It says that it is free to play, but in order to do most anything cool in this game, you need to spend real money.  Why on God's green earth would anyone EVER pay for fictious real estate and items with REAL money?  I know that the promise of making real money off of stupid little fake items sounds great...hey, if some moron wants to pay real $ for a fake shirt I made, let em suffer with their stupidity...but it is just wrong.  Can someone please explain to me why you would want to waste hard-earned cash on things you can't even touch?  Can you really live in that little house you have?  Are you really wearing that outfit?  IT IS A CARTOON PEOPLE... IT IS NOT REAL LIFE OR EVEN A SECOND LIFE.  Also, what happens if the makers of this game decide tomorrow that they no longer want to run this game?  Where is your money?  Gone, that's where.  Second Life might have been cool if you could make and sell things that weren't real for fake money that you never had to pay for with real money, but it got warped into this weird place for people that have no concept of what life is about.  Try going to a real museum and look at real works of art (they are everywhere in real life).  Try making real things and selling them.  Get a hobby and a First Life before you go searching for a second.  You are not a cartoon, you are a real person, and this game tricks you into thinking that you need the game in order to complete yourself.  Oh, and one more thing...is there really a place in this game that lets a unicorn rape you so you can have a unicorn/human hybrid baby?  Really...that is some sick crap!  WHY would you want to do that?  Just...wow, new weirdness that shocks me, and I rarely get shocked.

You are just being extremely closed minded. Most people play this game for entertainment, social interaction/status, business, or various other reasons. It's really just a virtual chat room that evolves based on the players creativity and economy. So what if they want to spend their own hard earned cash in a virtual world for virtual property. They worked for it not you, so you shouldn't question how they spend it.

I personally do not play the game, but I had tried it for a brief period. I can see the appeal of buying new clothes/items/property for your character because people like to be unique.

Lastly, you do not have to spend RL money in the game if you know how to create and sell within the game. You'll more then likely have to pay a small monthly fee to at least have a tiny plot of land, but that's a very small investment.

I consider it great personal experaince for project management.  and being able to show off personal projects instead of them sitting on my computer isn't that bad.

from one project I've made the equvlancy of $60(the best part is that it's commision on sales so it's permement income), and bothered to cash out on 25 for a programming book.  the best part is that it's all a hobby, if people want to pay me for it so be it.

also how is spending money on the game any different than a subscribtion for a normal MMO.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Well, what makes something worthy? The fact, that others are willing to give you something for it in exchange.

I consider L$ almost as "real" as every other currency. Today it is possible to pay almost everything without hardcash. In 50 Years cash will probable not be needed anymore.

A bankaccount in RL is the same as your L$ account in SL. Bits and bytes, which state "you have a xyz amount of money to spend", and is transfered to another account for a transaction.

If i buy a table in a onlinestore, no real cash is transfered. its the same as in SL.

    Think about it :)

If people can make money in Second Life, why shouldn't you?

Second life isn't for everyone. It's a bit too freaky for my taste, but to each his own.

I already posted this under the title "If you are thinking about joining this game>>>" but I thought I would put it here if you responded to my message entitled "Stupid" and don't read that message:

I realized shortly after I wrote a scathing message on here about this "game" that I may have been a bit harsh, so I downloaded and tried the game.  Now I can say with certainty that I was right the first time.  Here is a bit of my experience into SL:

    1.  My game kept crashing, freezing, and lagging.  I am not the only one to have this happen a lot (I spoke to at least 30 people that had this issue).  The main problem is that there are too many creations and not enough virtual space for it.

    2.  I wanted to upload a texture file.  It was just one little file.  It was going to charge me the equivilant to $2.50 for this file had I opted to pay real money.  It is like this for any file you wish to upload.  I understand that you don't want everyone to upload things all day long, but enforce a limit, not a price unless that person chooses to go over that limit.

    3.  Keeping your inventory manageable is very time consuming as many of the items you get for free are named things like "521A310" or some such thing and so you have to rename everything to make sense and put it where you want it.

    4.  There were a lot of bugs in the game.  Necklaces that  float about your head when you sit down, falling off of walls, things disappearing and then reappearing, and other issues.

    5.  To make things, you have to be in-world, which means you better hope it doesn't crash as it tends to do just as you are about to finish something complicated.  Also, there is an item  sweep of the lands as a little time passes, so if it takes you a while to make something, it ends up in a folder in your inventory for "Lost and Found."

    6.  People are constantly bumping you out of the way, including when you are changing your appearance.  That is right, folks...you are changing your appearance in-world, too.  When people bump you, you get pushed somewhere that is hard to see for you to continue to do what you were doing, so you have to mess with camera angles for a long time to get back to what you were doing or you have to reopen the appearance editor.

    7.  Not a big deal, but still annoying, you have to pick a really dumb last name out of a dropdown list.  My last name was Darkstone.  So you have to remember 2 names instead of the one and chances are pretty good you won't find a good last name for your screen name.

    8.  I wanted to ask the site a question I had about an issue I was having.  According to the site, only paid members can ask specific questions, the rest of the people have to pick a question type from a specific drop-down box, and there are only 5-6 options...none of which were relevant to anything I needed to know.  So, to ask a question, they wanted you to be a paying customer, and if not, to hell with you.

    9.  Some of the things you purchase from other players have bugs and do not work like they should, and there is no way to get your money back, at least according to the official site, so you can get suckered out of cash.

    10.  The only thing I found cool was the customability of the character.  It is a lot like The Sims because you can change almost every little aspect of the character's appearance.  However, this too causes a lot of the lag.  With everyone looking different, right down to eye color and finger length, it makes the server do a lot more work.

Yeah....SL is laggy, buggy and whatnot. You dont like it, ok.

But one point: The upload costs. To upload a file costs 10 Lindendollars, not 2,50 USD.  10 L$ are about 3 US Cents.

What i personally appreciate, is that it seems as you have played SL not just "5 minutes", but a bit longer.

While this is entirely true, one should consider what the motivation of the company is, namely profit. As long as the game is profitable or can be adjusted to be profitable, we can be fairly certain that they won't shut it down.

EDIT: In fact, you could argue the same for any MMO, except that instead of straight cash you're losing all the time-effort you put into your accounts. Even for a free MMO...if the company goes under, your time spent building a character has nothing to show for it. I guess the question then is, how much is your time worth to you?

    To DIXONHILL:

When I went to upload the texture file, it told me I needed to have the Linden dollars to do this...then it proceded to tell me that I needed to put the equivalent to $2.50 in my acct.  Whether this is as a minimum amount that I needed to place in my account before I could upload OR as the actual cost of the upload itself, I am not sure...but that is what the little window said when I tried to upload the file.

Oh, and for all those who don't know...a texture file is just a small square of color and pattern to use as a design for clothes, wallpapers, floors, furniture, etc.  My texture was only about as big as a postage stamp.

    To BOBDORF:

While it is true that you lose all that time spent if a typical MMO goes bust, at least it is just time.  I know some people that have a couple of hundred dollars invested in this "game" and that is worth about 25 hrs of actual hard work at a job assuming the average pay rate is $8 per hour.  This means that someone had to bust their a*s for a very long time, not just sit on it.  Then, not only that, but there is a monetary amount involved.  I know that money is not supposed to be the root of happiness, but not having it can be a major cause for depression.  I think anyone would much rather have their $200 than lose it to some game going bankrupt.  It is quite plain to see that the makers of this game are only out for money and care nothing about the players.  If they feel that it is just not worth the hassle anymore, they could take your money and run.  Also, for all you know, this company could be a front for an illegal business, a way to launder money.  You could actually be helping these people commit crimes.  Now, while this could be said about any company or business, at least if you get a sub at a mafia run deli you get some food in your belly, but with this "game" you only get virtual food...lol.

Well, I think I have gone on for enough with this slightly paranoid-ish  rant.  Have a great day, people.
