Do you guys read ?

Hey guys, was just curious of how many of you read books like fantasy, sci- fi, ect.

I've been reading R.A. Salvatore's Dark Elf(Drizzt) series and I love them, but this is really the first time i've read fantasy books so I can't really compare to much else.

Who is everyone's favorite authors and books ?

RA Salvatore is a good writer I enjoy his books.

Tolkien is always a winner  =)
Robert Jordans books kick ass. A bit long but the story line is awsome and Im so waiting for the next book... he takes to damn long to finnish that series.

Theres lots of good authors out there. I dont know if its just me but books that are thick and has a map in the beginning often seems to be good lol  Guess the map shows that the author has putten down some extra brainwork into the book and story  =)

Yummm, reading. Not many people do that. You can tell those who don't read by their posts of "THIS GAME SUXORS!!!!!!!!!111111111"

Anyway, R.A Salvatore is a good author and those books are done well. I especially like his style when it comes to fight scenes and the way he intricately describes Drizz't (Is there an apostraphe before the "t"? I can't remember) DoUrden's Twinkle and Icingdeath (his two scimitars).

Which one are you on by the way? I have read them all. My favorite was the Icewind Dale Trilogy, and the Dark Elf Trilogy was the second.

My favorite author would have to be Stephen King. Some of his work isn't fantasy, but he writes a lot of fantasy and fiction and I find it incredibly good. I also like J.K Rowling's infamous Harry Potter and despise those who think it is a "kid's book." Christopher Paolini suprised me with his first book, Eragon, which he plans to make into an ongoing series (***EDIT*** Sorry, Paolini is making it into a trilogy, not a series). I read that book and was in awe after it, desperately wanting more.

Here is a recommendation if you like Icewind Dale. Pick up some of the Dragon Lance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. There is a three-pack that contains "Dragons of Autumn Twilight," "Dragons of Winter Night," and "Dragons of Spring Dawning." Very good. Highly recommended.

Also, since you are into fantasy and probably will want fantasy done by Stephen King, pick up his Dark Tower series, which is not completed. He has one more installment that should be coming out in September. It is not classical fantasy, but incredible nonetheless.

Good post. I have read every one of those except for Ender's Game. I heard it was good but never got around to it for some reason.

Ender's Game is one of my favorite books of all time. You should definately get to reading it. Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind is pretty good.

    Drakaeon,

I've just finished Paths of Darkness series and will be picking up the beginning of the Hunter's Blades Trilogy soon.

I think I enjoyed the Dark Elf Trilogy the most, I love the underdark and Menzoberranzan.

Thanks for the info, I was actually in the dark on who to turn to after I was done reading the Dark Elf series. Much appreciated.

    I must recomend:

The Amber series by Roger Zelazny. Unique setting but most closely resemble Fantasy. It just do not get any better then this.

Fredrick Pohls' Gateway series and Isaac Asimovs' Foundation books for Sci Fi.

Aside from that i am a HUGE Terry Pratchett fan, and the Hitch hikers guide is probably the best book ever all categories.

Let me put it this way. I packed up all of my books into five boxes when I moved into my new house in 1987. There are approximately 1200 paperback books in those boxes.

That does not include the books I've read since then.

I read this fantasy book called Calling on Dragons and Talking to Dragons and they both kick butt. It's o good that an Anime/movie/cartoon should be made after it (espically Anime). You should read it. It's awsome.

I have been reading the DragonLance series for years...

Read the LOTR trilogy earlier this year. Just finished Harry Potter 1-3 and am starting on #4.

Have any of you read the Death Gate Cycle? It is also by Weiss and Hickman (original DragonLance authors).

I should agree - Ender's Game is good read

Myself very much enjoyed reading following fantasy/sci-fi authors:

Ursula Le Guin - kinda sword N magic genre series of novels - amazingly immersive read

Francis Korsak - 4 novels in great sci-fi series(not 100% sure on last name spelled in english)

Andrew Norton - one can say is classic

Edmond Hamilton's - the Star Kings is one of earliest sci-fi i read - makes you long for more.

I'd have to say my favorite Salvatore book is Servant of the Shard- I think Entreri and Jarlaxle (especially Jarlaxle) are some of his cooler characters. (Yes, I like the anti-hero type, and occasionally root for the villian.)

Besides that, Catch-22 is probably my favorite book of all time. So many great parts to that book, but I like dark humor.

Terry Pratchett is another favorite author.

And I'm busy reading the Jeeves Compendium, by Whodehouse. That is thoroughly enjoyable, if you enjoy a light, airy, very english sort of way of narration. Example: "I saw Jeeves hanging a great whacking big poster thing on the back of one of the chairs."

I'm goign to be 100% honest. I hate reading because after around 7 pages I get drowsy. English class ahs always been hell because I jsut can't do the reading. It is a huge strain on me to read large 300 page books.

I don't remember it being 1200 pages when I read it. The one that always seemed 1200 pages was Moby Dick, which I never did finish...

Not much of a sci-fi fan in terms of reading books of the genre. However, I absolutely loved the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Every book in the series was hilariously great, probably my favorite books. Also, as was mentioned, Ender's Game is an entertaining read.

Outside the sci-fi genre, The DaVinci Code (surprised I didn't see that mentioned yet) is a book that I literally could not put down (lost a lot of sleep so I could finish it). I also enjoy most Stephen King or Michael Chrichton novels, particularly The Shining and Airframe.
