Seriously though, to cut through all the complex and controversial issues raised in this thread (some pretty good dialogue though if you ask me) let me restate my original thoughts more concisely: It's not good business to promise something at summits to players face-to-face, then not deliver. It's also bad customer relations to then shut people down when they ask about the promise you made. In my mind, SOE ought not to do that.
The server merge thing was not promised, he was going to look into the issue. When he did, the devs advised against the idea, and the majority of the playerbase do not want this.
Get this through your thick head: WE PLAYERS DO NOT WANT A SERVER MERGE
A server merge will mean lost items, lost cities and the past 4.5 years building/placing our homes right where we have them. If we have to transfer off of the server that we are on, it will mean all those years of work GONE. A server merge will be just like another NGE.
A server merge will mean that the servers will be even less populated than they are now
I am quite happy to start a new character on another server, and play there, but if FORCED to move and lose my items, houses, identity and all 4.5 years of work then there is no reason for me to log into game any more.
Too many people feel like this, so the server merge plan from SOE was dropped.
The only way you can establish credibility to your claim is that you are Mr Smed in anon. To the rest of the player community, Smed has made a promise. If Smed or you did not mean what they read, sorry poor PR, very poor PR. If Bush declared war on Russia when drunk, don't blame the Russians for shooting missiles at his ass.
Once again Smed or Mr Try-to-interpret-Smed, no. Its easy to implement a merge that can tackle the difficulties you talked about. IF SoE cannot do it, hand over the code to a more able provider. Tons of game providers have done that. If its that hard to implement a merge, allow free character transfer. That way, those who want to move can move, those who want to stay can monopolize the ghost town. Win -win.
Too many people feel that merging is bad? Hmm you need to learn to read and count. Or both.
All those characters created using the 2nd slot unlocked from Jedi will get deleted in a transfer. The fact that Elder Jedi can currently have 3 slots is a bug and was not intended to happen. If anyone deletes that 2nd slot they can not get it back, because the coding of the NGE is not compatible with the pre-NGE. All that effort we have put into that character will get lost.
Server merges with SWG is not possible. It's either the updates that SOE do to attract players to come back, or SOE shuts the game down.
Also a lot of us have started chars on other servers, and have used up the 8 slots given, so if a merge happens now, then some chars will have to be deleted.
Those not currently playing the game have nothing to lose (except for Elder Jedi with 2nd chars to lose) as either your struuctures are packed up already, or youhave accepted the fact they may be packed up/destroyed.
With a lot of effort I am sure that a server merge is viable, but it has been agreed within the community and SOIE that it is best for the devs to concentrate on the content and fixing the bugs, and even if a server merge happens, it will not make people return to the game when the game is crap.

Sooo You start posting here saying that SWG is the best game out there, and then turn around and call it bug ridden crap?
As far as server mergers not happening because it would waste players time and effort they put into the game, I never noticed that being a big concern with SOE anyway.

It was when Smedders said he was going to fast track a merge, but now its not and getting better with Chapter 7 and 8 to come and whatever else they are working on. Once they have done all that and people still have not returned then there will be not much loss to do a server merge, so will work on that then. Can't see a server merge happening until at least 2009.
The demolition of the houses took them a while to do, and with those few houses being removed by players (limited to about 5 per player per day) the game lagged like crazy and even got disconnected!!
I do not hvae faith that SOE will be able to pull off a server merge with SWG without bugging the game further, and crapping out the game completely, giving the game a premature shutdown with no warning!!
Oh! and misterniceguy! I have some more hard fact for you! Coming from your own forums! forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m This was stated in another thread... lots of people wanting pre-cu back.. go figure! The only ones defending are the people with low post counts... another shocker! I think.. that i have made my point.
No kidding! Fact is it is NOT coming back. We all want it back but it is NOT. Get over it.
Point not needed to be made
I have not been posting as been too busy playing SWG
As for the last posts you have all made since my last post a long time ago, I see no hard facts, just statements which are more or less true, but twisted to suit your feelings of hate against the game, still brewing inside yourrselves for the last 2 years.
I would recommend you all leaving this forum, forgetting about SWG, and just play the game of your choice. Hanging on to these feeling towards SWG and by the looks of things will never return to SWG, you are wasting your time, and is not healthy.
Well how nice of you. so concerned about me wasting my time and my health, your sympathy warms my heart.
But truthfuly playing the forums is the most fun ive had since the CU, much funner than WoW, because when i play WoW i feel like i am wasting my time.
But posting around the web with all the SOE "truth" threads, well it warms my heart to know ive done something good, you know, point out lies and deceit and the rude behaviour of our former pals SOE.
And how i wish i could play the "game of my choice" but as we all know that was removed for something more how shall we say StarWarsy @Iconic
So until the hosts at MMORPG boots me out i think il just chill here. Preaching the gospel of truth about SOE
As far as server mergers not happening because it would waste players time and effort they put into the game, I never noticed that being a big concern with SOE anyway.
It seems to be after the NGE, as only the other month Smedley apologised for the NGE, and they knew that a lot of players had quit, but what Smedley did not realise was that players would still not return, he thought that once people got over the shock of the NGE they would return. Apparently not, and as the current playerbase have a lot to lose from a server merge, and do not have the faith SOE will pull it off, the majority have voted agsinst a server merge, so SOE decided to shelve the plan for a server merge.
The only people who are posting about server merges are ones who have not got much invested in the game to lose, or don't care about the loss, but the majority do care about the losses that could entail.
If SOE were genrous and made every update they did a success, virtually everyone including myself would be in an agreement on a server merge, but if that was the case the discussion of a server merge would not be happening and even those quit due to the NGE will still be playing now.
Originally posted by TheChronic guys please tell me why do you still play this piece of crap ? I just dont get it... prefering NGE-star wars galaxies instead of pre-cu swg is like driving a bike instead of a ferrari... people need to get this into their minds...
If by "ferrari" you mean model-A and by bike you mean a nice honda you are correct.
Yeah it must be impossible. It isn't like SOE couldn't just add another character slot per server or anything.... At this point what would it hurt.
This is SOE we are talking about here - Don't be ridiculous!
I logged one account in during the 3rd anniversary to get the ITV, but at the same time they brought in the Restuss events so was busy doing them on 2 chars of my account before the quests expired, that by the time I logged the 3rd char in the ITV had come and gone. I explained the situation that my account was active during the ITV period, and that I subscribed especially to get it, and been a loyal player despite the NGE, but I did not get it.
If you delete your Jedi 2nd slot char, and can't get it back to create a new char, they do not support in anyway.
At the end of it, the only reason the majority do not want a server merge is because we already know about the resrictions in place, but even if there were none, with their track record, they will totally screw it up, let alone give players the bonus of more char slots
lol i dont understand why everyone is so worried about losing everything, didnt we lose everything when SOE thought they needed to change the game. And if I remember that is why most of the population left.

With the NGE, you lost the time spent on grinding Jedi and you lost the professions you wanted to play
With a server merge a crafter will lose the resources they have lost since the beginning, and some would be very good ones, that even if SOE replaced would not be so good. Currently the game is not capapble of handling the 2nd slots from the Jedi grind, so those chars would get deleted, another bit of time for devs to solve. Vet rewrads and the preorder bonuses may not get replaced, like the Skiff from TOOW or Barc. Players will lose their lose their positions of housing, and have to go to the trouble of setting up new houses. Guilds will be divided and may never rebuild. Players may have to change their names.
These are only some that come to mind, there are probably more I have not thought of or that doesn't affect me.
A server merge with SWG will kill it due to its uniqueness of resources, crafting, harvesters, housing etc compared to other MMOs, which is why no new ones have adopted this complexity. Someone earlier said that this is bad game design but if it was not for this I would not be playing SWG, but some other MMO. Ths is SWGs strengths but is also its weakness.

So whats all this arguing about? Hmm oh thats right... why SWG is getting a bad rep... and why its our fault.. which it isn't SoE sowed what it reaped. Period. No argument. No defense. You can't possibly come near to properly defending them due to all the evidence shown against them. Period. End of discussion really.
You: "Our PR can't repel evidence of that magnatude!" /endspontaneousbullcrap
Point not needed to be made
Really? It still seems to me that its not sticking. All the proof incuding the link above is more than enough evidence to show you it wasn't our fault that they got a bad rep.. it was their own actions. It boggles my mind how you can't see that... actually its amusing... and making for a fun late night argument. One that you are losing... obviously ...since your losing your cool. *points at the last patch of white text below and grins*
I have not been posting as been too busy playing SWG
So busy that you have time to reply to all these threads hmm? Im sure.. you must be soloing alot lately.. seems to me this is just a big plea for people to come play so you aren't bored in ghost cities. Why else would you come here and point fingers?
As for the last posts you have all made since my last post a long time ago, I see no hard facts, just statements which are more or less true, but twisted to suit your feelings of hate against the game, still brewing inside yourrselves for the last 2 years.
You choose to not see the facts, because your in denial, or too bias, or narrow minded, or even being paid to say it... or all the above.. *shrug* who knows? All I see is someone outnumbered 10/1 with plenty of proof, even a link... I really don't even have to bring up another shred of proof.. the ball is still in your court and bouncing... and so far all i have read is babble.
Again, no offense, just simple observation... *shrug*

Ah yes, then the standard pro-NGE response. Leave while we are wanting to reminence on the good times we had in pre-cu? Who knows maybe a developer will see this and create a game like pre-cu (not swg of course, but similar, and lol.. better).
Heck if the game dies... then i'll have every right to say that soe deserved it and be happy that one of thier games died.. which looks like it may happen pretty soon...
I have waited a long time to see them bring back pre-cu. If they would have done it earlier they would have brought in tons of people.. now i think no one would come back due to them beating around the bush, lying some more, and not doing what they should have done a long time ago.
But in all honesty the bigest thing that gets me is how you defend them so vigorously. They could change that game on you any moment and you really don't even realize it, they have already done it twice. :P

O.k. I'm curious to see what my fellow vets think about this issue, so I'm going to try a poll.
I voted too. If that is what happened then I agree with you but that is not what the case is with server mergers Smedley DID Fast Track it - this does not mean that the server merge would end up actually happening.
Smedley fast tracked it. According to a red name or a dev posted back saying that a server merge is not going to hapen due to player feedback.
You can complain that the devs are idiots, or that they have created a game badly to prevent the server merges happening, or that the whole affair was bogus and a cover up, but you can NOT complain that Smedley did not Fast Track it.
By continuiing to do so, you are seriously losing respect, and Smedley will end up looking rosier than ever. This is the absolute truth I am telling you. I am not Smedley nor anywhere near a fan of his, and would like for him to get his comeuppance for the NGE, but this thread you are totally wrong.
..... So if you weren't defending SOE and Smedley that last load of pages...... What exactly were you bloody doing? If you think just saying that your not a fan of SOE or Smedley or heck even saying you played Pre-Cu as well that sure as hell isn't going to make everything all brilliant especially since your third paragraph pretty much makes you look like an idiot instead.
Quoting people doesn't make you clever, in fact, it makes you all the more stupid for not bothering to read the quotes you post in the first place.

You mean just like they said they made the NGE based on player feedback! If you believe players don't want server mergers then you MUST still believe that players wanted the NGE.
It isn't like SOE has not lied to the players on many occasions and just went ahead on projects they wanted to do.
Server mergers are very possible. They did it in EQ, planetside and Everquest II. They also merged servers in MxO and Vanguard which are games they didn't even make. They have merged servers in every game they own, so don't you for one second believe they cannot merge the SWG servers. The only problem is that it would be a little more painful than other mergers.
I guess the question boils down to this. Do people want to play a game with all their stuff or do they want to play with other players? You seem to be so set about how unpossible server mergers are that you cannot think outside of the box.
It is very possible, the problem is that is it doesn't offer a good return on investment and SOE would rather let SWG wither and die than to do anything that would draw more bad press. The bad press is more important than anything a handful of happy SWG players means to them considering they have 3-4 new titles coming out soon.
SOE is deperatly trying to change their image to reduce the negative buzz about their upcoming titles. They could really care less about you and I as they are trying to target new audiences.

First I do not have to complain that Smed did not fast track it, I do not care, and so far I vote with my wallet.
Second, I do have to point out that Smed + the fiasco of SoE follow up is a disaster in PR. It may be done on sincere goodwill on the part of SoE, but at the end of the day, what the clients perceive is the final word, and that is BAD move. Don't try to blame the clients for turning away from the game. Blame SoE for their blunders. That is the way of free markets, clients have freedom to choose, producers would have to find a way to attract clients or suffer the fate of SoE's SWG team.
If after 2 years of bad PR Smed is still running SWG with such a team of buffons, I would say SWG holds a bad future. They are screwing up their own efforts to rescue SWG, or are they not trying to in the first place?

Well the summits and invites to vets for face-to-face meetings with SOE devs and Mr. Smedley were an attempt at healing some of the damage done by things like the NGE. A big part of the hurt there was that people felt badly misled. They just got professions revamped that were then deleted. They just bought an expansion with items made for the old version of the game, and within a few weeks all those were rendered useless. Stratics chats about the new expansion talked as if the CU would be "here to stay"; no mention was made about revamping the entire game. In other words they were talking as if they were planning to deliver one product, when in reality they were planning to deliver another. That's extremely dishonest and unethical.
Fast forward to now. It doesn't do much healing when the players at summit meetings ask for server mergers, the President of the company says that they're needed, they're going on the top of the "to-do" list and then they don't happen. That just adds salt to the wound. It's another example of being led to believe that something will happen, and the reality turns out to be something different. It's probably the case that some folks who were considering packing it in for the final time, resubbed when they were told to expect server mergers. Well, they didn't happen, and these people are going to feel burned and misled yet again. It further adds insult to injury when people ask about the mergers they were told to expect, and then get their threads locked. If you can't see that this further damages SOE's credibility and creates more bad feelings for already burned players, then I'm not sure what to say really. I guess you don't want to see that, and I'll have to leave you with your thoughts.
P.S. If the president of SOE says he's going to fast-track server mergers, it's logical for players to expect them to happen in the near future. If it doesn't materialize, they're going to feel misled and let down. Player feedback led Mr. Smedley to make his comments in the first place, and now you say player feedback led him to alter his plans. If that's the case, I'd suggest that he learn to survey his players' preferences more professionally and accurately before making announcements, promises, statements of intent etc, because saying one thing and then doing another is not a pattern SWG can afford. Also if Mr. Smedley says that things are going to happen before he consults with his development team about their capabilities, well again, he's just setting things up to go wrong. Management decisions that set things up to go wrong are another pattern that SWG can ill-afford.
I should thank mrnicefanboi. He reminded me to change my post-CU rating for SWG.... silly me, I'd never changed it after the NGE. From an average of 4.3 to an average of 1. Just on the off chance anyone actually LOOKS and those ratings.
And before he starts THAT up again: yes, I played after NGE, several times (free trial). I still hate it, and I still want the downfall of SOE and all its works.
lol i dont understand why everyone is so worried about losing everything, didnt we lose everything when SOE thought they needed to change the game. And if I remember that is why most of the population left.

Tip for Mr. Smedley (free of charge by the way, I usually get paid for this -_^):
Explore the technical feasibility of server mergers BEFORE telling disgruntled players at summits that you're going to fast-track their implementation. Failing to do this is setting yourself up for another credibility crisis. Of course this tip comes too late...this time, for this game. Hopefully people in the MMO business can learn from the mistake though and avoid this kind of thing in the future. This is still a relatively new industry, and this period in its development is going to be full of important lessons.
I finally posted my review of the NGE as well, a stunning 1.0 lol. Actually I'm not even sure it deserves a rating of 1, an outright "total failure" would best describe the NGE.

Sooo You start posting here saying that SWG is the best game out there, and then turn around and call it bug ridden crap?
Yeah it must be impossible. It isn't like SOE couldn't just add another character slot per server or anything....
At this point what would it hurt.

Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
lol i dont understand why everyone is so worried about losing everything, didnt we lose everything when SOE thought they needed to change the game. And if I remember that is why most of the population left.
Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012
O.k. I'm curious to see what my fellow vets think about this issue, so I'm going to try a poll.
And here's the follow up:
No kidding! Fact is it is NOT coming back. We all want it back but it is NOT. Get over it.
*shrug*
I would recommend you all leaving this forum, forgetting about SWG, and just play the game of your choice. Hanging on to these feeling towards SWG and by the looks of things will never return to SWG, you are wasting your time, and is not healthy.

Star Trek Online - Best Free MMORPG of 2012

First I do not have to complain that Smed did not fast track it, I do not care, and so far I vote with my wallet.Second, I do have to point out that Smed + the fiasco of SoE follow up is a disaster in PR.
Smedley fast tracked it. According to a red name or a dev posted back saying that a server merge is not going to hapen due to player feedback.

Thanks for the reminder.
I finally posted my review of the NGE as well, a stunning 1.0 lol. Actually I'm not even sure it deserves a rating of 1, an outright "total failure" would best describe the NGE.
