Blizzard has announced the edition of character name changes to World of Warcraft thanks to recent advancements in gnomish engineering.
We're happy to announce that through the wonders of modern gnomish engineering, you are now able to change your characters' names. Finally, you can turn the moniker that seemed like a good idea at the time into something more befitting your true standing in World of Warcraft.
Visit Account Management to begin the paid character-name-change process. The fee is $10 per name change. As with our recent addition of voice chat to the game, this feature is being rolled out across all realms in several phases. The first-phase realms are listed in this forum post. Enjoy this new feature and the subsequent effect that your bold new name will have on friends and foes alike.

$10 to change your name? DANG! That should be free.
Currently Playing: Nothing (waitinf for WAR)
Retired: AC2, EVE, DAoC, EQ, WoW
Now... if they would just allow you to pay a fee or something to change factions: from horde to alliance or vice versa.
eg: LvL 70 Tauren Shaman pays fee and becomes LvL 70 Dren Shaman.
Would be very cool, imho.
Nothing Blizzard (or any of these game companies do ) is ever going to be free...its always about squeezing out some extra green...besides... 10.00 is not bad... ....

ADDITION!!! not edition. arrrrrghhh!!!
A small fee will stop players changing their name for the sake of it. $10 is nothing. Atleast we get free voice chat unlike EvE for example.
BTW, players can only change names every 90 days, if you have a player on your ignore list the name will change on your list too so he cannot escape your ignore list but changing names. Also any mail or auctions will change names too.
you are a communist

Thanks! I guess $10 is not terrible. It will keep people from doing it just for the sake of changing a name as cupertino said.

I retract my statement. You are a genius!
Sweet, all the ninjas of the past can now come back with fresh identities to steal t6!

Also EVE has never charged anyone for the voice chat. They did release pricing info but have yet to actually ever charge anyone.

I think that you should only be able to change the name of each char once and have to give a reason.
Fair enough if you picked a shite name and want to change it... but it could be used to make a shite name to be "really funny" or so that you can be a complete cock and then that person just hides behind a new name.
I prefer assholes having to move server to escape their reputation.
"Gnomish engineering"?
DANGER, Will Robinson. DANGER!
CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Lol exactly what I was thinking
GREAT !!!
Now the powerleveled chars are even more attractive since its no problem if you get a NI HAO name of some sort.
Ninjas can get in a fresh new guild too ! Awesome blizz... everything to get even more money at the expense of others!

Were going off topic but for voice chat the more bandwidth the better quaility, so saying EvE has better quality but uses less bandwidth makes no sense.
Granded I have not heared EvE voice chat but WoW voice chat is just the same quailty as we had when we had a Ventro server.. and unlike EvE we dont have to pay for it... eventualy.
I don't think this is an good idea, the charakter name sticked to the player who plays it, I hope Blizzard will add something to UI, where you will can see old name or so, scammer's gonna be happy with this.
It removes social-thingy of the charakter.
This will benefit players who were drunk and watching Monty Python when they created their toon and named them something stoopid like TheLarch, which seemed hilarious at the time but upon sobering up realized they had gimped themselves forever.
or so i heard.
I'll side with this being an overall good change for the game.
As with most official decisions made by the design team of any MMO, there are positives and negatives. Expecting a decision that pleases every single member of a 9 million person community is unrealistic. As long as the positive outcomes of a decision outweigh the negatives, the game is moving in the correct direction.
Yes, it's true that the name change option will allow some folks to hide their former identities and attempt rejoin a community from which they were ousted. Most of these kind of abrasive players will not be able to keep their offensive personalities in check for very long, and will quickly be ousted again. If, perhaps, they learned a lesson and have changed their ways, then they will remain welcome among their peers.
The modest fee of $10 is not unreasonable, and it helps to assure that the privilege is not haphazardly abused. If the option does end up getting out of control, Blizzard can easily implement a cooldown period where, for example, players may only receive a name change every 3 months.
