GJ07: LotRO scoops PC game of the year

Friday 26-Oct-2007 3:07 PM Turbine's MMO runs rings around the competition

(Drum roll). The PC Game of the Year 2007 - sponsored by PC Gamer, has been awarded to Turbine's Tolkien-powered MMO The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar.

And the hobbits rejoiced.

Lord of the Rings Online beat off WoW, Football Manager 2007, Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to grab the gong. We've have a feeling this is going to generate some interesting and no doubt highly enlightening discussion in the comments below...

LOTRO is a decent game, but I feel that there aren't many good RPGs coming out in general these days.

    So LOTRO is better than........

    Halo 3

    Portal

    Ratchet and Clank

    S.T.A.l.K.E.R??????

I can name amny others but what it comes down to is that Such competitions are trying to compare apples to oranges as the saying goes.

LOTRO didn't really hit me as a "Game of The Year" type of game.  It was solid and was made for a wide audience, but there was nothing innovative or revolutionary there...

It's hard to find a game that hasn't won someone's Game of the Year award, isn't it?

If I read gaming magazines anymore, I would know which one to avoid now. thanks!

Considering magazines and the like are always behind it's quite possible portal wasn't around in time for review. Besides as awesome as it was when it boils down to it Portal is a tech demo with a tacked on comedic plot.

I think when you go to the article and the site and look at how they chose to pick their winners, this award makes perfect sense.

I like LotRO.  It's a good solid game that is beautiful to play and has a great community.  Right now online gaming is hot.  So, I can see a lot of votes being put in by the readers for Lord of the Rings.

I'm glad it went to Turbine.  They have been really working on the free and frequent updates.  The last one was huge.  And they promise to keep up the good work on their part.

    It all seems so stupid
It makes me want to give up
But why should I give up
When it all seems so stupid

I've gotta say...I'm baffled by this award.  How did WoW win online game of the year and then LotRO won PC game of the year?  I don't know much about this award, but I think it's done by voting.  So how did that happen?  Why didn't LotRO also win Online game of the year?  Who's voting for WoW in one and LotRO in the other??

I think in the future they should exclude MMOs from winning in the PC GOTY category.  Not that I put any weight in these awards whatsoever.

It's always nice for the Q1 and Q2 games when the awards are given out before Q4...if eligibility was based solely on calendar year, I highly doubt LOTRO would have won. The game was a solid effort, but just couldn't hold my interest or spark any desire to log in...by the time my account was cancelled in September, I'd been inactive for nearly 3 months.

I would put Bioshock ahead of LOTRO....

    First Al Gore, now LOTR.

    Nothing makes sense anymore.

IF THIS IS THE GOLD STANDARD OF MMORPGS, WE ARE WORSE THAN EVEN I THOUGHT!!

The only good thing about LotR is its name and accessibility and graphics.  The gameplay is predictable.  The game is shallow and lacks depth.  Customization does not exist.

Wow. How can it be a GotY when we still have 2+ months left in this year?

As for LotR Online... it's an okay game, but I definitely don't think it's GotY material.

I agree with truenorthbg  on this.  LOTRO was nothing special and in fact boring.

Well thats obvius, people who played wow did not all voted it to be Pc game of the year, but thay did think it was best online game of the year, other people who did not realy play wow or dont play any online games did pick it as online game becouse just of its famous. And people who did vote for Lotro did vote for both, but Wow did lose on 200 votes for pc game of the year.

    Playing: World of Warcraft.
Played: Lord of the Rings Online, Starwars Galaxies.

I don't follow single player PC games anymore, but it must have been a really bad year if they picked an MMORPG to fill the slot.

    LotRO's a decent enough game....but I can't agree with this particular award.....

iz ok...I don't read PCGamer anyways....

    btw...what's a joystick?

It's what we old-timers used to use to play our Ataris with before they invented the gamepad.   (and also a potential euphemism)

That's why I say MMORPGs should be excluded.  You'll never find a bigger group of fanboys than MMO players...and there's so many of them it kind of makes it unfair on the single-player PC games which I think the award should be about.  The Online game of the year should be enough...or if they have to, there should be a MMO only award.  That's IMHO.
