If they ever make an EQIII it should be a true conversion of EQI. Basically re-write the game without zoning (that in itself will require some additional modifications to handle boundary issues, but that should basically be it), with higher system spec requirements, improved interactivity (add speech, add resources, add brokerage houses, housing, better quest journals, UI interface, etc), but fundementally leave the game alone. I think you can add stuff to the world, such as additional quests and redraw zones as necessary to improve appearence and ease of use or better support lore. Support for Battlegrounds and PVP as possible without destroying classes (which probably requires some changes to PVP/BG reward distributions over traditional methods used in Wow, DAOC, etc).
No one wanted real class changes imo (Except for the vocal minority). No one wanted terrain changes, i.e. changing the timeline significantly was just an excuse to make a new game with the old title and NPC names, and definitely no one wanted boring subdued graphics. High Fantasy-- Yes, but High Mundane-- No.
I would play a game that attempts to do what I describe above -- if enough others will.
Dionysus187, Heh, and your wide experience gives u the rigth to STATE that the game is as you said... c'mon go and troll something else. U like a game fine, u don't, ok!, but don't come with idiotic theories of your wide "3 months" gaming experience saying what's have been said 100 times in previous posts (that my friend, is trolling). The fact, game of the year. Some may like it, some don't, but at least be original.
Once again Namarië
So I'm not allowed to say something if someone else did? You asked why I expressed an opinon, then simply shoot the reasons down because you read it somewhere before. guess I will have to search every post mentioned Lotro ever and make sure I don't repeat some opinion already said before. I should really get the draft picks of opinions earlier. You've effectively made it "catch 22". Let me guess, if I did state a reason why i didn't like it that you haven't read before, because that apparently disqualifies opinions here, you would just dismiss as something along the lines of "you don't know what your talking about"
Also what constitutes enough time for someone to play a game they don't like to give an opinion on it and not be shot down for not playing it long enough? As it turns out I'm not a masochist or insane so I'm not going to play something I'm not enjoying simply so I can make sure no one will ever think my opinion is lacking.
Hey did you know every single review, award, and score is a OPINION? Its true! Meaning if someone gave it game of the year, its not some how scientifically the game of the year, those particular people just think so. you can certainly agree with them, but it doesn't make it "fact" thats its game of the year, only fact that someone thinks its the game of the year.
When someone starts saying "troll" just because they dont like or agree with what you said lol just ignore it.
VG will never be good. Just like asking if there will be a EQ3. EQ2 should show you that. With a hand full of servers and 3-4 and only at times are heavy. As for Lotro, being in beta and playing for awhile then stopping then coming back to see it has really lost alot of players.... lol oh yeah its getting better and stronger LMAO. You need to let go of the past and move on. Change is hard but can be really fun.

Err, didn't you just ASK the guy for his expanded opinion, now he's a troll again?
Smedley told us that they fully intend to do another EverQuest MMO. "One day in the future, but not sure what point. No one's actually working on it," he said carefully.
Is SOE still even in the development business? EQ1 was a success, but Planetside, Matrix, and Vanguard are all pretty much fizzles at best. Even with a sure fire license like SWG they managed to screw the pooch and turn it into a dud. I think EQ still has almost as big a population as EQII and a lot of people still think it is the superior game of the 2. I think SOE has pretty much taken on the role of publisher like they are doing for PoBS and were going to do for Gods and Heros before they dropped it. I don't think SOE can weather another flop or even a semi flop like EQII.

C'mon. I don't know what you think constitutes a "flop". But i certainly don't think EQ2 fits the bill considering its still going strong after 3 years. If it was a flop it would've been canned ages ago.
You sure do like your "troll" status because you don't give me any reason to think your anything but one.

SOE didnt create Vanguard. Sigil created that. SOE just bought the rights to the game when Brad and company could no longer handle the development / management of the game for a variety of reasons (one of which being money).
I do agree however that personally I think Smedley is keeping SOE well away from being named as a developer of any NEW mmo's. They probably realise that (rightly or wrongly) their name tends to sway opinion in any MMO they are seen as directly developing.

/agree. If I had to compare lotro to eq2, eq2 wins hands down. lotro imho is the blandest mmo ever made. The first game to lure you in to paying $50 to be a "founder" to pay $10 a month, only to play it enough to see that the game reminds you quake 1....everything is "brown" ...no music in the game and hardly any classes. Its kinda like WoW for runscape...but you have to pay for it

wel I guess by your definition The matrix was a success also ? EQII started off aginst WoW and got it's butt kicked bad. While I would not consider it the flop Matrix and vanguard were it never has much of a population, and now has gfallen behind the newer games more innovative such as LoTRO and in the future WAR and AoC. Granted it is the best game SOE has at the moment, but as far as a sequal I guess Vanguard is as close as they will ever come to one. I mean really all EQII is is EQ1 with better graphics and the easier to solo. Nothing really that wasn't there in 2001 as far as basic design and game play.

Cant agree here sorry Jack..LOTRO has in now way anything more innovative then EQ2. Or do you speak about the little cutscences,
in the epic quests??
Agree that maybe WAR or AoC have some new things comin..but at this times the most options to
fool around got EVE..then i think EQ2 *wink*
i speak of the better known one.

As an aside, I think if EQ would have retained its depth, community-spirited (community guilds) and group-focused gameplay it could have remained the number 1 in subscriptions. [Speaking for myself, I still enjoy friendships I made years ago in these community guilds. Oh, yes. We raided. Often. But our focus was not raiding; we were about community, friendship, and fun. The majority of people I still game with and talk with daily on AIM are from Everquest.]
When they began to force raiding, keyying, flaggings, and so forth people left the game. When people became "uber" even the self-described "ubers" left the game.
I think it would require introduction on more solo gameplay, but that is about it. Obviously, certain changes in access with raiding and things.

ok see if you can follow here. EQII's big "advances" over EQ were its better graphics and voice overs. Otherwise at release it was pretty much EQ in design thanks to the "friends and family and EQ legends testers".Big mistake on Smeds part in my opinion. Any tester who wanted anything otehr than EQ with shiny graphics were shouted down on the forums by the asshat old school EQ lovers.
After WoW released a couple of weeks after EQII and kicked it's ass all over the place in sales SOE had to go back ( 2 months later) and patch and tweak the design to make it more solo friendly and add solo quests, get rid of the co dependent crafting, add character slots etc. but it was too little too late to overcome WoWs initial jump out of the gate.
LoTRO offers everything EQII does plus it has- player generated music system, MvP style PvP, mob play in game, ongoing story lines, lots of free content updates - need I go on ?
Not exactly sure what AoC and WAR will bring to the table but if they have decent releases they will just be the final nail in the coffin for the SOE lineup unless SOE comes out with something fun and innovative soon.
Seriously though, Vanguard is making a comeback. I just switched from EQ2 to vanguard and I am loving it. For me Vanguard is deeper more complex system than EQ2 with better level design (i.e. more beautiful and realistic environment) . Vanguard still has some bugs but its actually playable now vs launch.

Vanguard will never make a comeback because the graphics are soo bland and horrible, all the classes are boring and it has crap list of races which look all the same. They don't even have helmets in and all the armor is aload of crap anyways which is in + the game is such a grind and good luck finding a group. The main thing that got me down was the combat animations and spell effects which were all very bad and the character models were just sooo ugly.
A Smooth launch a successful MMOG does not make. Lotro has been on constant steep decline for quite a while. I wouldn't use Lotro for any standard of excellence.
I wouldn't say LOTRO is in steep decline however I agree smoothness of launch doesn't net you brownie point's. For Pete's sake that's the bare minumum we should expect.
Also since when did you get an immunity pass for an MMO's duration because of a smooth launch?
