Rick Saada from Flying Lab Software took some time out of his development schedule to take part in this developer profile Q&A. In it, he talks about Pirates of the Burning Sea, some of the history behind the game and why you should play it.
MMORPG.com:Let’s start off with the obvious. Can you tell us a little bit about what you do on Pirates of the Burning Sea?
Rick Saada:I wear quite a few hats. I’m the tools dev, so I make the tools that our content crew uses to make all the missions, NPC’s and suchlike, and that our design crew uses to make all the loot. I wrote the editor for laying out automated tests for the test team, utilities for the art team, plus a zillion other little tools. I’m also one of the founders at FLS, which means I appear at the top as well as the bottom of the org chart (it’s circular, really). Oh, and I’m in charge of banana bread. Some here would argue that’s my most important job.

...so the game is being released when??
LMAO Rick is so cool. Great interview. And the last part about the carebears PVP LOL!!!!
The expected release was for early next year.
If a carebear PVP game ever came out I would be grumpy bear.
Release Date: January 22, 2008
"Sometimes, things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. People are basically good. Honor, courage, virtue mean everything. Power and money, money and power mean nothing. Good always triumphs over evil. Love, True Love Never Dies."
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Conversely, if I were to somehow be given the Carebear license with no strings attached, I'd want to make the hardest hardcore game ever. Just to redefine the term 'Carebear'. If you called someone a carebear on that game's forums, it would be a mark of respect. 'Dude, you OWN. You're a TOTAL CAREBEAR.'
LOL, that would be so awesome
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
being a subscription game we’ve got a more level playing field than the “lose for free, pay to win” model.
LOL never heard 'Free To Play' described that way before.
Hmmm,Banana Bread.
100% player economy...
I am now intrigued enough to keep an eye on this one.
True though, isn't it? Our CEO is threatening to swipe it and claim the comment for his own. I'd best trademark it quick!
Rick Saada - FLS Dev & EPFBM
You wrote Castle of the Winds, Rick? That was a great game - my friend and I played the free version for ages and eventually even ponied up to buy the second part!
I'm actually a bit more interested in PotBS having learned that fact. ;-)
Ah ha ha it is true. Ive tried VC and I feel like slaming my head against my computer. I only play it because I am waiting for PoTBS to FINALLY come out....True though, isn't it? Our CEO is threatening to swipe it and claim the comment for his own. I'd best trademark it quick!
So I sit here and wait.
BTW I always read the interveiws you guys do and as always I enjoyed reading it.
Yep. Long ago now (nearly 20 years It's fun that people still play CotW. I get fan mail fairly regularly from people around the world, and I'm into my third generation of players! Paul Canniff, one of the other FLS founders, did some of the town art, too, back in the day when programmers could do good enough art to max out the abilities of the system. Nowadays programmer art just has to be ugly enough to get the art department to replace it quickly!

That would be because we're small enough to not have lawyers and marketers censoring our posts Of course that means you also get raw and unvarnished developer-speak, so you get the bad with the good.

That is bad? Hey as long as you know wtf you are talking about I could care less if you were the most charismatic person or not. I like when dev's tell us what is going on, at least you all know what is going on with the game and can relate to the average gamer( well you should be able to right your writing a game for us ). Its much better then a PR guy who doesn't know what they are talking about.P.S. If they have a emote where is my pirate one? lol
This game is going to be the surprise hit of 2008, mark my words!
