Ok i am just about to download AC (depending probably on what replies i get to this)
I just want to know what the character creation and levelling is like.
Do i just pick a race/sex/face and class? or is it deeper, do i get to pick facial feature and body feature, and do i get to alter my stats etc at creation (are there even stats?)
And when i level is it an autolevel whereby i gain certain skills and have no choice, or do i get to put skill points into certain areas? or do i get extra skills to use?
I havent really looked on the homepage or anything, and am about to have to go for about an hour, so hopefully when i get back somebody can explain this to me.
I havent put my preferences because i dont want to bias the replies.
Thank you

You get to pick facial features, however body is not there. You do get to pick your clothing LOL.
When you level, yes you auto level meaning you built up enough experience points to move to it. However, the experience points you need to place in the appropriate skills and attributes you wish to raise.
You certainly will be the one to govern how your character develops in those regards.
No matter which way you chose to go, remember, just have fun

There are a lot of choices for your characters face but other than that there isn't really much else to customize. However, it doesn't really matter since your underlying character appearance is never really seen since because 99% of the time you will be completely covered by armor. The extremely wide and varied armor in AC1 is one of my favorite things about the game. Almost none of the people you see will look the same.
Can somebody advise me on how high the stats go?
I have for example created an axe wielding warrior and as i level i am putting all my first points into taking my axe skill to 100.
What is considered high for a primary skill in AC1? and which skills are particularly useful in this game? for example is jumping a more useful skill than it sounds? is it necessary or useful to be able to pick locks?
And one more question can i solo if i pick an archer/thief style character?

I highly recommend using the boards at http://acvault.ign.com/, they are the most active and helpful AC1 boards around.
As for jumping, it isn't that useful don't invest a whole lot into it and definetly don't specialize it, same for running.
If you want to play an axe character, obviously specialize axe and later on you may want to specialize life magic and/or melee defense or magic defense. I say later on and not right now because as a lower level you won't want to waste a whole lot of skill credits on specializing skills, just aquire different skills and test them out, there is no harm. There is a quest you can do as many times as you want later on to untrain or specialize skills, so don't worry about training a crappy skill. You can always change your characters skills later on and you will get all of the skill credits and xp back.
And for lockpicking, it's a questionable skill. It costs a lot for what it does I think. But it is good for soloing quests. So, if you want to solo you will probably want to train it. It won't be a whole lot of use at lower levels but later on there are more and more things you can do with lockpick.
Oh jesus, not for a new gamer. Dont use Vault boards for AC until you know most of the game mechanics.
First off, what server are you playing on?
For an Axe Warrior, Str and Coord are your most important Stats. You should Specialize Axe and probably Melee D. Specializing makes raising the skill cost less experience.
You can start at creation by raising your stats anywhere from 10-100. You get 270 points to add to stats at creation which means you can raise 3 stats to 100 and leave the other 3 at 10. I would probably add some to Endurance to raise your Health and Stamina(or just pump those stats for your lower levels.) and add some to Focus. Both Focus and Self raise your magic skills which everyone needs at least a little of. Idealy, you can be able to buff yourself with the highest level of magic no matter your starting weapon, it just costs a few apendages to get your skills that high
For melee weapons, you are able to use sets of loot generated weapons. There are 4 tiers of loot weapons, starting at 0 skill weapons, then 250 skill, then 300 skill, then finally 350 skill. When you get to a higher level, having 400+ melee weapon skill is ideal for hitting just about anything short of VoD and Caul. At lower levels, I would focus on raising Melee Defence, your primary Weapon skill, and your Health, Stam stats, and of course, the Run skill.
When you get 20+, I would suggest taking or raising Item magic so you can use portal magic proficiently.

Jumping...heh. This isnt a big deal. Some quests require you to make jumps, and some places are MUCH easier to get to if you have a high jumping skill, but it isnt crucial. Wait till 30, 40+, then pump a few 100,000 xp into it. Till then, 60-100 skill is plenty. Id invest more into run personally. 100-150 is good for low levels.
Lockpick. If you LOVE questing, this is an IDEAL skill. There is also a crafting element to LP(lockpicking) in which you make keys(from broken or twisted keys), keyrings and a few other things. You can pick doors and chests(excluding quest/mini-quest and special chests that have upwards of 1000-9000 difficulty to pick) to make passage easier in dungeons. Its not a crucial skill, but if you got extra points, have all your magic skills and other crucial skills and like to quest, then go for it.
Soloing! Easy as pie in AC1. Archers make strong characters. There are no real "thief" style characters. You can have Dagger as your weapon and train Lockpick and Roleplay a thief, but there are no Hiding, Skulking, Stealing, or Backstabbing skills in AC1. Dagger is often called a gimp weapon, and it DOES do alot less damage than say, Sword, but it costs almost nothing in skill points allowing you to take almost whatever else you want. (if your doing dagger, be aluvian!)
There are 3 essential things you need to be able to solo:
1) A way to do good damage. You either need to specialize a melee weapon skill, a ranged weapon skill, or War Magic. This will insure your ability to hand asses like a pro
2) A way to heal yourself well. If you are a Mage(war magic is your weapon), then I sugesst Life Magic and using Heal Self spells and Drain Health Other spells.
3) A method of transportation: Take Item Enchantment. Get the skill to 140 base. Your all set
Pretty much, unless you gimp your stats or skills, you can solo most things easily provided you have the correct elemental weapon/arrows/spell.
