Pretty much eliminates the Kotor theme from their MMO if they are just now reaching an agreement, They have been working on this MMO for over a year. You generally get agreement first then make the game.
So I don't think the MMO is a Kotor derivative and the subject wrong on this thread.
What is boils down to is that people like Star Wars because some characters are special, as in one-in-a-billion special. But in an MMO, no one can be THAT special or it wrecks the game. If LA didn't learn this lesson the first time around, the new game is going to be just as frustrating for everyone as SWG was.
If they did learn, I have to wonder why they would try again.

Just b/c they are announcing the agreement now doesn't mean that they just reached the agreement recently.
This deal could have been in place since the begining they just didn't announce it right away but with all this talk recently about insiders "leaking" information that Bioware Austin is making a KoTOR MMO they probably felt pressure to announce something before everyone stole their thunder.
That doesn't mean that this IS indeed a KoTOR MMO, but it also doesn't mean that it's not. We'll all just have to wait and see. But this announcement does indeed add some more weight to the possibility of it being a KoTOR MMO
Regradless of what it actually turns out ot be it's still amusing to watch the rumors spreading through community.
Though I'll admit if Bioware produced a KoToR MMORPG I would certainly be inclined to try it rather than avoiding it like a moldly sock. They'd be much more likely to focus gameplay on what made Star Wars great not mechanics on making T-shirts, opening shops or singing.

Those are the things that some people loved about SWG, for some it was why they never played the game. If BioWare could incorporate the best of both these worlds (combat and non combat related activities of equal importance) in a robust way, something for everyone, they would have a hit. Because sometimes doing what you want is fun too, even if it involves something others consider boring. In WoW and most other MMOs if I'm not doing Raids, or small quests, I'm logging out since there is no community type projects to get involved in outside combat.
Crafting, entertaining, harvesting, world building ect are all what are called mini games, but why should they become less and less important to the game world just because some people would rather do combat the majority of the time? I never thought I would enjoy crafting, till I tried it. There were other important roles within the SW universe other than being the leet hero, and that was what SWG tried to focus on, but failed due to time, money, greed ect. The important aspects of the game, like the iconic content was left unfinished. When they did try to finish it no one cared because, well, few of those types of players existed in the game.
I hope BW can find balance, it's most important to the types of people who will be playing a MMO based on SW.

They are announcing the agreement now, that doesn't mean they didn't make the aggreement a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.
If it's a StarWars MMO that doesn't delete professions, years of quest progress, change core game mechanics unexpectedly, or sell an expansion for the game system they're planning to delete within a few weeks, that'll be priceless ^_^.
LA is just as culpable as SOE over the CU-NGE, as with a lot of IP partnerships, the owner of the IP has the final say of what goes into the game. So what that boils down to is LA giving the green light to, or even orchestrating, the whole CU-NGE debacle. There is nothing stopping them from doing it again with any new Star Wars mmorpg and turning Bioware into the next whipping boy of angry Star Wars gamers.
Here to hoping that Bioware have a little more 'executive' control of what goes into the game.
"So, I wanted to clarify that we did, here at SOE conceive and develop the NGE. We did so with the best of intentions, to try and make a better game. No blame or buck is being passed.
We can, and I am sure many of us will, debate for years on end whether this was a good idea. Personally, I believe the concept of the NGE was sound. Some smart guys had some good ideas to make the game better, Jeff being one of them, and they went for it. A bold move and honestly, I am happy to be a part of a company that is not afraid to try something different. Where did we go wrong? Delivery, we failed in our timing and communication. That is where we let you down most, SWG faithful, and for that I truly apologize.

Whatever the joint venture turns out to be, here's hoping that Bioware wouldn't "conceive and develop" anything like the NGE, and that if they do LucasArts will say, "Red Light" this time.
for those who were saying that we don't even know if it's going to be a game...
"SAN FRANCISCO, CA and EDMONTON, CANADA — October 30, 2007 — LucasArts and BioWare Corp. today announced that they have entered into an agreement to create an interactive entertainment product. The product, details of which will be unveiled at a later date, will be developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, and will push the boundaries of the gaming market by utilizing the strengths of both companies to deliver an innovative, high-quality experience.
“LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare,” said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. “Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment.”
“BioWare’s mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans.” said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare Corp. Added Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare Corp., “The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games to market."
Ok check this out folks..Go to Bioware.com, move cursor over “Bioware games” look at the very bottom of the list and you will see “New Next Gen Game” under MMO, and Sonic DS. Is this a completely new game? Not “the mmo” maybe it is KOTOR III?

That's been there a long time. Could be KOTOR 3, or better yet, maybe they're doing both KOTOR 3 and KOTOR Online.

Ughhhhh, that would be too much to ask for. I would probably drown in my geekdom.
As to the new release....I refuse to get my hopes up. I've been burned too many times. However, this does look promising for a KoTOR MMO.

Personally I would like KOTOR3 to be release before an MMO set in the same time period. They storyline at the end of Sith Lords just kinda... stopped. They surely could knock out a single-player console type game in KOTOR3 and then release a MMO version a year after that.
After all, Blizzard did the same with that wittle game franchise "warcraft" .
Take a breath and stop jumping for joy for a moment to think about this.
If its a KOTOR MMO the positive angle for Lucas Arts is there will be less legal approval for art and stories that are created by BioWare. They simply can record what and pass blanket approval. SWG suffered from having every little thing being scrutized for the sake of the franchise. Thats a major plus. This also could open doors to develope related properties and spinoffs.
HOWEVER, Lucasfilm has two media products coming that are set during the Clone Wars and after. KOTOR is not set during those time periods and would have less appeal to the global audiance who know about movies but not of KOTOR. One is bigger than the other. The Clone Wars has a lot of resources developed and being developed currently. Lucas Arts is charged to help promote the whole of the franchise so more than likely lean towards pleaseing that whole. Further, what is different between the two products other than set dressing?
I look forward to the offical announcment with guarded interest.
P.S. to my friends here, I would have posted earlier but was on vacation in Hawaii.
