New Russian movie "1612"

So this movie is about how the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth invaded Russia. While I am kinda pissed of that every each one of historical Russian films is about how heroic they are, I found the comments for the trailer on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VKkc1CVSAc)  to be of greater amusement. From them I was able to describe all the 3 major forces in the war:

Russians-people who say in broken english (more broken than mine (impossible you say? Hah!)) that all of your countries suck.

Poles-hordes of history obsessed madmen who eat Russians (according to Russians)

Lithuanians-the entire nation consists of me... Which is probably the worst of the 3...

THE TOMATO IS NOT A FRUIT, DAMN IT!!!

That movie's gonna be ridiculous!  Frankly I think their disregard for history is downright disgusting. I hope this movie will fail in the theaters.Otherwise they might be inclined to make more of this kinds of shit.

Seriously. If it doesn't stop here, where WILL it stop?

What will be next? A movie in which the Russians fight of aliens invaders with a computer virus and a heroic sacrifice? Or a movie where the Russians single-handedly destroy an incoming meteor? Or they might start to fuck with the world war history. They might make a movie in which the Russians, in stead of the Brits, capture the enigma machine from a sub. And it doesn't have to stop there. They might make dozens, if not hundreds of movies where lone male heroes export the patriotic values of Russia by killing a shitload of terrorists/enemy soldiers/whatever...

I hope to God this kind of propaganda won't be lied by the general public. Tho what kind of population can continuously like that kind of almost-sneaky-propaganda.

And they do the same crap with every each one historical film. Even a film about the Afghan war, where I excpected a certain ammount to criticism for the government and for war in general, just became a pro-war film about the rightousness of Russia's action and heroicness of the troops...

Didn't Russia pretty much needlessly beat the shit out of Afghan when they invaded? I hate all these stupid 'epic' films, they're all so utterly dull, it's like the adult equivalent of cgi animals. Not to mention.. was that a fuckin' unicorn!? This is not Blade Runner!

Were you being satirical? If not then let me point out that American movies are pretty much the same. I'm not defending the yanks, don't get me wrong. I just wanted to point this out.

I was satirical as I was summing up a few of the clearest examples of AMERICAN disregard of history, which is a lot more frequent than Russian propaganda. Was just pointing that out.

Oh now I see it! Satire! Forgive me for my idiocy...

I have to admit that most countries have self-righteous, chauvinistic and dumb movies. But when it comes to historical cinema in Russia, the only movie you can see is a self-righteos and chauvinistic movie. In America there are a lot of movies about Vietnam that are less than patriotic, usually demonstrating the inhumanity of the troops and the pointlessness of the war.  Russians don't have movies about Stalin or Ivan The Terrible. It's different with casual Russian films. Those movies are usually very auto-ironic. So that problem is only with historical cinema. Of course every nation has the right to be proud of it's history, and Russians did endure a lot of suffering throughout their history, that's why they have the right to make these kind of movies. But don't forget about your sins, that's all I'm asking.

Of course you're more than right. Tho note that in the US (just the most prominent example) those historical movies that are more accurate usually aren't  viewed by the main-stream public. And thus the damage is still pretty huge.

But I agree that some historical perspective would be nice. And really, the Rusky's don't have to make stuff up to have great movies about their history. They're always pretty ballzy.

Loving that elitist quote Mad has in his profile, sort of telling if you ask me, in regards to this "argument" anybody that attended a damned high school usually disregards "epic movies" historical value and only a scant portion of the population buys into it, what those movies do accomplish is encouraging young people to go study history more in depth, which is hardly a bad thing even if they end up being a little disappointed that Tom Hanks or Clint Eastwood did not single handedly win WW2.

Elitists and their constant hatred for the common man.. sigh.

    Excellent find.

Speaking of historical revision, you should read (if you have not already) "Samogitia:  The Unknown in History" about how the Samogitian history is lost.  I am not sure if you are Samogitian or not.

    Hey there! You speak Lithuanian?

Thanks for showing me that book. Looks really interesting. Gonna have to read it sometime. Actually I'm half Aukštaitian and half Samogitian. I'm actually interested in Samogitian history. Their lands were always given away to the Livonian Order as means of a truce. But the rulers always knew that the second the Samogitians were given away a rebellion would start thus weakening the order even more. Plus they were the last European ethnic group to take up Christianity.

It's not anti-American. It's just a well-known fact that many, if not hundreds of American movies have a massive disregard for historical accuracy and often physics. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy them to the fullest. Movies like Independence Day and Armageddon are my personal guilty pleasure.

And I don't recall you complaining when this might have seemed to be an anti-Russian thread.

    Hypocritical of you? Most certainly!

You don't aspire to be unique? I feel your pain.

And it's strange you accuse ME of being elitist... It is you who claim to know me... judging from (get this people!) a signature. You must have some exceptional intelligence and social skills if you're able to deduce my personality from a web trinket. And if you don't have those skills... Then it would seem you're quite the elitist to make such in depth conclusions without proper knowledge.

What's even more amazing is that you claim to understand the psychological consequences of mainstream Hollywood movies! In fact, where I gave nothing but a personal opinion you exibit some knowledge about peoples' reaction in detail. Do, educate me. Back up your claims with sources. Be so kind and teach an elitist a good fact-based lesson.

    I'm looking forward to it.

    BTW, punctuation is your friend.

I actually do not speak Lithuanian; I can understand some words when I hear them.  I am fascinated with the language, though, considering it is the oldest European language.

I am also fascinated with Lithuanian history and the repelling of the Mongols (saving Europe);  the repelling of the Teutonic Knights (the Lithuanians were the only ones to do it in all of Europe;  the last pagan European civilization to convert to Christianity, which they did not under sword but voluntarily; and in general the culture, history, and things.

Although I have never been to Lithuania, I hear it is a beautiful country.  I remember reading in the NY Times that walking through Vilinius was like walking through a fantasy novel with the cobblestone streets and architecture.  I understand there are still some challenges after declaring independence from the communists in 1991 (I think it was 91).

Besides, I believe the rest of that quote goes "Democracy is the worst form of government there is... until you look at the alternatives."
